Tip #1
They're, there, their
English grammar 101. Know the difference to these and you will sound like a pro!
Their: indicates possession
-think of "heir" which is something you inherit from your parents
Ex. Their hair is very pretty. Their ice cream is melting.
There: referring to a specific place or indicates the existence of something
-think of over here, over there
Ex. I've never been there before. There is a picnic table over here. "I see there are flowers in your garden."
They're: contraction for "they are"
-think of the phrase "they are" and if it can replace that
Ex. They're very nice to me. I would try to stay, but they're waiting for me.
•Ask test questions. Read it in your mind or out loud!•
-For there, will the sentence still make sense if you replace there with here? If so, then that's right.
-For their, will the sentence still make sense if you replace their with our? If so, then that's right.
-For they're, will the sentence still make sense if you replace they're with they are? If so, then that's right.
•Recognize the mistakes•
Wrong: Shelley went over their.
Wrong: Their is no one here.
Wrong: The dogs were chewing on they're bones.
Right: I can't believe they're leaving their children there alone!
