Tshepang

Silence...

No creaks.
No flickers.
No noises.

No one spoke. Our nerves were strung to their maximum, expecting... Something. Something to happen. Someone to say something.

"It's-"

"Don't! Don't say it." Caleb interrupted. Even though I didn't say it I had to admit it to myself.

It had gone quiet. No longer was their activity nor shouting. In fact...

"Where's the Revd?" My voice rang out even though it was just a whisper.

It was too dark to see, only one candle on the altar and yet it offered nothing. I stepped toward the altar and slipped.

My hand instantly shot out and grasped Unathi's shoulder, balancing myself. Suddenly the light was enough. Suddenly it did reach us, just barely.

The floor glistened as scarlet liquid made its way to us. I had only to barely lift my eyes to see the dark shadow of the Revd sitting against the wall. His blood was a sickening piece of art splattered on the wall.

A scream or maybe a shout rang out. I'm not sure we were all rattled, one of us enough to let it out...

"Why?!" Connor screamed. 'Why?!"

Immediately the chairs began to move. Slightly. Almost as if being pushed out the way. But it wasn't just the chairs, it was the benches as well. A massive force moved down the path, shoving everything out of its way.

My feet hit a step. I hadn't realized that I had backup-ed to the altar. We all had.

It stopped.

I tripped into Kete. I swear I heard breathing.

"What the hell?!" Kete yelled out. "I thought you wanted us here! Is it even you?"

Connor scrambled up the altar. "Did you hear that?! That was a growl!"

He fell into the candle, knocking it off the massive cabinet. It should've been just that. Instead the candle somehow caught him or at least his jacket and went up like tinder.

Connor screamed and manage to get it off just as it burnt away. Toni scrambled to him but something happened. It's almost as if something grabbed her because she slammed into the stairs.

A cry rang out but I couldn't figure out from who it came from. It sounded too young to have come from us.

I calmly describe these scenes to you but I was anything else. I was cowering, shivering and crying in the corner. In some instances screaming as I watched everything. Most I didn't even remember until way after. And when I did remember I hated myself for it.

Something grabbed for Caleb and pulled him off the altar down into the benches.

Only Shay seemed untouched. Then again she was in a similar state as me but that was just from witnessing the things that were happening.

Oh, you idiot.

I lunged for Shay and grabbed her, pulling her against me. Immediately things seemed in another world, as if there was a bubble around her. I couldn't see it but I felt it.

Duh, Zake never included Shay in any of his murderous instances. He never wanted to hurt her.

"Stop it!" She shouted, tears streaking down her face. "Stop it Zake!"

The world stilled. Toni sobbed with Connor in her hands, passed out. Kete laid on the stairs, blood dripping from a wound in her head. Unathi was tending to Caleb who was groaning in a broken pile of benches.

My head hit the cabinet covered with ceremonial cloth. As if a hand had wrapped around my throat. I clawed at it but there was nothing there to claw at.

The last I saw before I passed out was the once beautiful church destroyed and a shadow standing by the piano.
