Shay
The others were together. They knew each other. They had their links that bound them together.
However I didn't. My closest relationship was with Toni and that was through my best friend. Next to my best friend, it was Zake.
Strangely (unlike the horrors you heard from Caleb, Connor and Kete) unlike the things the others experienced, I didn't. No phantoms, dreams nor things moving that weren't supposed to.
What many don't understand is that this kind of stuff happens everywhere. Mysteries and hauntings aren't only located in the USA. Yes, most shows and etc are based in America and that's why most of these things are only believed to happen in America.
Just like every country has its own vibe and certain things only locals will understand. So it stands to reason that South Africa, our chaotic country, has its very own kind of hauntings.
Kempton Park hospital was the one most knew. An amazing hospital, supposedly, abandoned with all its equipment. Reports of voices, noises have made it the most popular in South Africa yet if you followed this book, that didn't really mean much.
There were others of course. An abandoned property in Pretoria, Benoni's Ewing street, St Elmo's Convent (There's always a church, isn't that right?), a house, castle and Westfort Leper Hospital.
So what was it about Zake? Was this another story that had something to do with mythology? Was there some god out there taking out their revenge because of something one of us did?
I didn't want to think of this anymore. I rubbed my head, messing my hair. Math wasn't going in. Neither was Afrikaans, English or any other subject I had gone to today.
My eyes glanced out the window. A literal mother of all storms seemed to brewing. Since the morning the clouds had gathered, thunder rolled with the occasional flash of lightning. Yet the storm never came. The clouds just grew darker until night was day.
Why me?
The question continued to roll in my head. The others... They made sense. Friends... But my involvement didn't. Sure we dated a few times but was a crappy relationship really a reason to come back from the afterlife and haunt me?
Well that's assuming he was dead.
The class was relatively empty, half of the students at home expected to come back tomorrow on my day off. The teacher droned on so she didn't notice how I continued to stare out the window.
Then he was there. In front of me. Literally the next desk, maskless with a massive smile. A few curly strands fell over his eyes but there was no mistaking it. The lanky, cute boy had returned.
I can't tell you what I was thinking. I just sat there, stating at him as his eyes darted between me and the board.
"What?" He finally whispered with a sheepish smile on his face. "See something you like?"
On instinct, I snorted. "Where the hell have you been?"
He looked at me strangely. "What do you mean? Hello, we've in class for the last half hour."
"Are you serious?" I asked but when it's clear he was too confused, I snapped. "You disappeared! The police and everyone is out looking for you."
Slowly he looked around, his smile becoming a smirk. "So you haven't forgotten about me, Shay?"
"Shay!" My head whipped to look at my teacher. She was glaring at me. "What are you doing?!"
I looked at her funny. "What?"
"Shay you are shouting at no one hunny."
