Yelling at the Sand

Write about a trainer bringing his/her Pokemon for a visit at the beach!

Even though tourists may think Alola is a grand paradise, they'd know better if they actually lived here. One, a lot of stuff is way overpriced because it has to be imported. Two, we're not actually as peaceful as people think, especially not with Team Skull running around. And three, living extremely close to a volcano that could erupt at any moment isn't "beautiful", it's terrifying.

Despite all of this, though, I even have to admit there's one place that'll always have a certain magic to it. The ocean.

"Stuff?" It was the first time I had brought my partner-in-crime, Stufful, to play at the beach. Living on an island, we had passed it many times when on one errand or another, but it was that day that I decided that we deserved to have a break. At first, Stufful poked around in the sand as I set up an umbrella for the two of us, the little Pokemon seeming to be searching for something as he dug little holes in the sand.

"Did you see a friend already?" I asked him, though I didn't look closely into his search as I struggled with the umbrella.

"Stufful! Stuff, Stufful!" Stufful pranced over to me, bopping me leg with one of his paws. When I finally got the umbrella to stay open, I looked at him, and he pointed to a spot in the sand.

There wasn't anything there.

"Oh, silly you." I picked Stufful up, who just looked very confused now. "Why don't we take a little dip in the ocean now?" I walked him over the the ocean's edge, sitting down in the wet sand and placing him down next to me. I breathed in the salty ocean air as a breeze came over us, the waves coming in and around us.

Looking over at Stufful, he was shuffling back a bit as the waves came in, crying out at the water. My shoulders dropped a bit, and I tried to reach out to grab him.

"It's okay, little guy. The waves aren't going to hurt you." He allowed me to scoop him up and place him in my lap, the water just brushing against the base of his paws. "See, doesn't it feel great?"

"Stuff!" Stufful became more relaxed, poking at the water a bit and making little splashes.

I placed Stufful back down next to me, getting up and running into the next crashing wave. I turned my back to it as I fell in, the coolness wrapping around me like a strange blanket. Opening my eyes as I was underwater, I saw the sunlight refracting through the water. Soon, though, I had to come up for air, looking over at Stufful on the shore.

"Come on!" I waved to the little pink and black Pokemon as I bobbed with the waves, still able to stand since the water was only a little deeper than waist deep with my legs straight. Stufful smiled, running after me, until it seemed that the sand was slightly disturbed, sending him tumbling into the wave. I gasped, quickly going under and swimming to find him. Since the water was clear, it wasn't that hard, but snagging him as he got swirled by the water proved difficult, especially since he was squirming, even when he was in my arms.

Coming back up, Stufful coughed a bunch, and I just hoped he hadn't swallowed too much water. He knew how to swim; he swam all the time in my aunt's pool. But, if I had to guess, the trip probably caught him off guard. When he recovered, though, he started to point at the ground where he tripped angrily.

"Stuff!" I looked at where he was pointing, but there wasn't anything obvious, just a little disturbance where his foot probably got stuck.

"Aw, don't get mad at the sand, you're okay." I bounced Stufful gently in my arms, though he now seemed to be having none of it, grumbling and continuing to point at the ground. I walked out of the water, carrying him over the sand and to the umbrella. Pulling a towel that I had in the bag that I left near it, I placed it on the ground before setting Stufful down on it. "Now, are you okay with staying over here by yourself, so I can go in the water for a bit longer?"

Stufful nodded, though was eyeing the sand suspiciously. I sighed, deciding to just leave him to his fun, while I went back and enjoyed the ocean a bit more.

The main reason I find the ocean so magical is it's harmony and near silence once you put your head under. As I was swimming in the ocean, multiple Wishiwashi darted by me, on the alert for any predators. A couple of yards away from me, I could see the top fin of a Braxish sticking out from underneath the sand. The reason why those Wishiwashi were darting away so quickly, I'd bet. It could be violent, I wasn't naïve to something like that, but it all worked like clockwork.

I popped out of the water after a while of swimming, looking back to see how Stufful was doing. Once again, he was stabbing at the sand, and it looked like he was going to pounce on something, but came up entirely empty. The breeze was growing stronger, but I didn't mind it for the moment.

I just didn't want to get out of the water.

After a while though, I was beginning to get angry, and Stufful was probably starving, so I knew that it was probably time to go. Emerging from the ocean, I looked out to where I had had the umbrella set up before. Now, though, the umbrella had fallen, probably due to the wind, and had snapped shut. That, I didn't care about, but what did alarm me was that Stufful was nowhere to be found.

"No, no, no, no no." I felt my heart drop into my stomach as my eyes darted around the beach. There were other trainers with their Pokemon, but Stufful was nowhere to be found. "Stufful!" I ran towards the umbrella, yelling out Stufful's name, but I didn't hear any answer from my little friend. I kept yelling his name out, as I looked around, but there was still no answer that I could hear. I started to wonder if I should go and start asking other trainers, but then I heard a rustling.

Then a very, very loud rip.

"Stuff!" Stufful was pounding his way out of the umbrella, though how I didn't notice he was in there, I had no clue. In that moment, I was just relieved to see the little guy, scooping him up in my arms. For a second, I felt Stufful tense up and feared that he would sack me in the face, but he soon noticed that it was me, and not some stranger, and relaxed.

"You don't even know how worried I was," I said to Stufful as I cradled him in my arms, feeling my heartbeat slowly return to normal. "What happened?"

"Stuff!" Stufful pointed at the sand again, like that gave me any indication of what happened. The sand was still, but now that I was looking, it looked like the sand all around the umbrella had been disturbed, with little mounds and divot here and there.

"Corp!" I heard a little chirp behind me, before feeling a pinch on my foot. Yelping, I turned around, seeing a red and white Pokemon poking out of the sand and staring at me. Before I could say anything, though, it disappeared underneath the sand again.

"Stufful!" Stufful pointed at the sand where the Pokemon just was, and I now understood what he meant.

"Oh, was that Corphish bothering you?" I asked Stufful, who nodded in return. "Well, we're going to go home, okay? There, you'll be able to relax." I packed up my bag and slung it on my shoulder, before picking up the umbrella and looking at it for a long while.

"Eh, I guess we'll just get a new one."
