Summer 2019 Prompts and Judging Details
As previously stated, this competition will have two rounds. The first round starts right now. Entries will be posted as they are submitted (when our admin is available of course!) and are due at midnight CST on June 26th. Since you should be emailing your entries to gottareademallclub at gmail.com, we will know exactly when they were sent, so be very careful to not go over the deadline! Please also remember that your entry must be 3000 words or less (we will be checking the count in Wattpad's editor before publishing).
If you send in an entry late, you will lose points. The longer you wait to submit, the more points you will lose. You will also lose points for going over the word count. If you submit so late that the judges don't have time to finish reading it on schedule, we reserve the right to disqualify you instead. And if you go too far over the word count we may do the same thing.
Please make sure to give your one shot a title and remember that we are trying to keep the entries anonymous until the results are announced, so be careful about revealing yourself as the author if you care about ensuring fair and unbiased judging. That being said, comments on the entries ARE encouraged (though not by our judges obviously!). If you're a contestant who wants to comment on all the other entries, perhaps consider leaving some on your own as well just to throw everybody off!
The entries will be judged based on the following: plot and structure, originality/creativity, spelling/grammar/formatting/punctuation, clear and unique voice/style, use of tone and mood, emotional impact, and how well it followed the prompt. These will be used as guidelines for the judges as well as areas for discussion during our results streams, but the final scoring decisions will be judgment calls on the part of our judges, who will try to weight each category appropriately and possibly consider other factors. For example, if you write a one shot where a Bulbasaur's razor leaf is super effective against a Charmander for no reason, we'll probably down grade you for pointlessly violating canon. Also, if your entry violates the content guidelines of Wattpad, we will not publish it at all and you will be disqualified.
The entries with the top five total scores will move on to the second round. Final winners will be determined based only on the scores of the second round, so if you barely make the top five in the first round, take our feedback, and make dramatic improvements in the second round, you still have a fair chance at winning the competition.
Round One Prompt:
Just like last year, we're trying to keep this as fair as possible for writers of all styles and genres of Pokémon fanfic. Your task is to write a one shot that really captures the essence of a particular region or setting. This can be as broad as capturing the culture, climate, and unique elements of an entire region or it can be as small as drawing out every detail of a single building or location. Take us to Kalos. Take us to Castelia City. Take us to the Johto Bell Tower. Take us anywhere you want as long as you really bring out what it means to be in that setting!
Fans of the anime can feel free to use anime specific locations as well, like the Orange Islands or one of the various cities and towns that Ash and his friends visited that go off the map seen in the video games. The same goes for any locations specific to the manga. Fans of Mystery Dungeon can choose locations like Serene Village or specific dungeons. You can also choose to create an original setting if you want, but it may be difficult to compete with locations that are already established in the fandom since it will take longer to explain everything and you still have limited words. Regardless, you are welcome to try if you would like.
Round Two:
You are free to start on an entry for round two any time you'd like. You can even send in your entry for it early, but we'll only be publishing these after the first round results have been announced and only for those who have moved on.
Prompt:
Write a one shot containing your favorite Pokemon or your favorite canon character.
Option 2: Use any of the prompts used in previous tournaments. Tell us which one in your email.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments!
