Down Memory Lane

Cynthia sighs as she holds her head up with her right hand.

One of the flaws of being champion is being required to sit in City Hall and listen to the old politicians ramble about policies no one cares about. She would ditch, but her conscience would be eaten away by guilt.

She looks around the room. Everyone seems to be focused on the current speaker, who is speaking about a new policy that will require house owners to mow their lawns once a week.

She rolls her eyes, and carefully pulls a book out of her bag. She places it on the table in front of her and opens it up.

"Myths and Legends? Nice choice," the woman next to Cynthia says with a smile.

"Thanks," Cynthia says as she returns the smile.

She flips through a few pages, and she finds the Sinnoh section. She turns to a page titled "Celestic Town", with a picture of the town, focusing mainly on the Celestic Ruins in the middle of town.

Cynthia can't help but smile at the reference of her hometown. She immediately begins to read.

After a while, her eyelids begin get heavy. Cynthia fights to keep her eyes open, but it's all in vain as she eventually falls asleep.

...

"Cynthia? Where are you?" Cynthia's grandmother sings as she wanders around the house.

A nine-year-old Cynthia hides behind the curtain, giggling uncontrollably.

"Hmm, I wonder where she should could be?" Cynthia's grandmother wonders out loud as she slowly walks towards the curtains. She pulls them apart, causing Cynthia to squeal as she attempts to run away. Unfortunately, she's cornered, and she falls to ground in laughter as her grandmother begins to tickle her.

"Hey Cynthia, I have an idea. How about we go look at the ruins in the center of town?"

"Really? You'll take me?" Cynthia asks as she lifts herself off the ground.

"Of course! Now put on your shoes and let's go!"

Cynthia quickly obeys, and they walk out the house holding hands. In no time, the ruins' entrance appears into view.

"Wow, look at that!" Cynthia says.

She lets go of her grandmother's hand and takes off towards the entrance. She stops in front and stares at the two paintings along each side of the entrance.

"Wow! This is so cool!"

"Isn't it? Now, can you tell me which Pokémon is the one of the left?"

"It's big and blue. Maybe a Snorlax?"

"Try again honey. Go ahead and take a closer look."

"Ok!"

Cynthia runs up and touches the wall on the left side of the entrance. She runs her hands against the rough wall. She examines the painting. It's chalky, but bold. Cynthia runs her hand on the painting and looks at her hand. Nothing rubbed off. The wall that the painting is on appears to be a type of yellow or gold colored brick, giving off a slight earthly smell.

What catches her attention is the yellow ore in the middle of the Pokémon. The Pokémon's four legs and head are blue, besides it's body. There is a big yellow circle that appears to be the Pokémon's eye.

"I see! It's Dialga!"

"Very good," Cynthia's grandmother says with a smile.

"Oh, what does it say underneath?" Cynthia asks as she squints, trying to read the faint letters.

"The flow of time never stops. The past, the future, the present," Cynthia's grandmother reads.

"Can you tell me which Pokémon is on the other side?"

The one of the left is a bipedal Pokémon, with wings sticking out it's back. It is completely pink, and has two big yellow circles; one is on its shoulder, the other is it's eye.

"Well, if that one is Dialga, then this one has to be Palkia!"

"Good job!"

"Oh! There's writing on this one too! Can you read it? I can't make out the letters!" Cynthia asks.

"Of course. This one says 'Space is ever-expanding dimensions. Our spirits, too, are as space'."

"Cool!"

"Now, let's finally go inside," Cynthia's grandmother says as she leads Cynthia inside.

Once inside, the earthy smell goes stronger.

"It's cold," Cynthia says as she wraps herself with her arms.

"No worries," Cynthia's grandmother says as she takes her lab coat and puts it on her grandchild.

"Thanks Grandma!"

"Anytime. Follow me."

Cynthia's grandmother pulls out a flashlight and guides Cynthia to the furthest part of the cave.

"Oh look, another painting!"

On the brick wall, three Pokémon are painted on the wall in a triangle. In the middle of the triangle, there a red sphere.

"What does it all mean Grandma?"

"I'm not sure."

"Who drew this?"

"I don't know."

"Oh."

"But don't will, I will figure it all out!"

"But what if you can't Grandma?" Cynthia ask as she looks up at her.

"Have some faith Cynthia. It will go a long way."

...

"No way!"

Cynthia sits up, blinking repeatedly until her eyesight adjusted.

"What did I miss?"

"This idiot wants to tear down the Celestic Ruins!" The woman next to her explains.

Cynthia's eyes widen.

"Now, now, let me explain why. I plan on using the cave from the ruins and turn that into an underground tunnel that connects to Heathorne City," the man standing at the podium explains.

The room goes silent.

"I have Gym Leader Roark and his workers from the Oreburgh Mine to work on the project. They will ensure that the tunnel is safe and doesn't disrupt the environment of wild Pokémon too drastically."

Whispers break out.

"Would anyone like to say a few words before we vote on it?" The man asks.

"I do," Cynthia says, standing. Politicians stare at her as she makes her way down to the podium.

"Celestic Ruins have a special place in my heart. Not simply because they are in my hometown, but because that is the location where my love for myths and legends were born."

"Where are you going with this?" The man asks.

Cynthia sighs.

"It's an important landmark because it teaches young trainers these myth and legends. And these myth and legends are an important thing to learn."

"And why is that?"

"They are the root of our ideals, beliefs and religion."

Mumbles break out.

"It teaches us that there are stronger beings than humans and common Pokémon. We have the Lake Guardians, and Dialga and Palkia. And we can't forget Giratina and Arceus."

"Most, if not all trainers go their whole lives without interacting with these Legendaries. However, we all know they exist. Because we have faith. Not only on these Legendaries, but faith in ourselves. We believe that we can do anything if we set our mind to it. And faith is what fuels and makes the Sinnoh region different from the rest. Destroying the Celestic Ruins will start the decline for the Sinnoh region," Cynthia finishes as she walks back to her seat.

...

Cynthia knocks on the door. Her grandmother opens the door.

"Cynthia! What a surprise!"

"Hey Grandma! I brought dinner!" Cynthia says as she enters the house.

"Oh? Are we celebrating something?"

"Let's just say I won a very important vote," Cynthia says with a smile, as she begins to set the table.

"I'll explain as we eat!"

"Ok dear, but let me help," Cynthia's grandmother says as she reaches for some plates.

"I got this Grandma, don't worry! Have some faith in me."
