Club Member Interview: Gremlin
If you had 740740 pounds, what would you do with it?
Give some money to my parents so they can finish the work they're doing on the house, buy lots of stupid stuff I don't need and then stick the rest in a savings account. Pretty boring, but practical. If I didn't do that, I'd blow it all in a poker tournament or something.
What is one food you would dare to try that most others wouldn't?
Well, I'm a pretty picky eater and I don't try a lot of new foods so... I dunno. A new chocolate bar or something.
What do you fear?
Waking up one morning and no longer being awesome.
What about writing Pokémon Fanfiction do you enjoy the most?
Just getting my ideas out there. I have a really vivid imagination and seeing my wacky thoughts translated onto a page out of my head is really cool.
How much money would you take to conquer your worst fear?
How much are you offering?
What are five things you think of when people say the word "America"?
Bandit Keith
Trump
Spelling certain words differently to us Brits
Obesity
Guns and general stupidity
Hooray for America!
Top five favourite Pokémon and why?
5. Tangrowth – I never even looked at Tangrowth twice until I drafted it in the competitive draft based league that I run. I ended up loving it so much that I drafted it again the next season! It's so bulky and yet so powerful. I'd use this thing again and again in battles, it's just that dependable.
4. Butterfree – I'm always affected by my in-game experiences and I always use Butterfree. You can get it fully evolved very early on and it's a total monster and a pivotal part of pretty much every team I ever use in-game. Also, have you seen the anime? Beautiful design, beautiful Pokémon.
3. Charizard – Does this need explaining? It's a cool looking fire dragon starter. I was five. I fell in love instantly.
2. Kingler – I fell in love with Kingler when I used one in a Heart Gold Wedlocke. The amount of battles that my buddy Crab Cakes somehow managed to pull through when I needed him most was unreal. Combine that with an awesome yet simple design and good memories from the anime and you've got a Pokémon that I love.
1. Ampharos – Far too many reasons to explain. Ampharos is the most dependable, most adorable, most awesome Pokémon of them all! I've used Ampharos throughout countless playthroughs and nuzlockes and it never disappoints!
Is there an instrument you are playing or if not, what instrument do you wish to play?
I used to play the trumpet but I gave it up a few years ago. It just takes a lot of time and dedication and I wasn't really getting any better so I stopped practicing.
What is your dream job?
I've pretty much always wanted to be an actor, ever since I was a kid. Either that or an astronaut.
What's something most people don't know about you?
I'm a nice person.
If you could be anyone other than yourself (fictional or real-life), who would it be and why?
Why would I not want to be me?
What do you consider your greatest strength in writing? Your greatest weakness?
My greatest strength is probably my humour and my style of writing. My greatest weakness is definitely when I get too invested into the story and characters so then I make decisions with my heart rather than my head. I then change my plans for the entire book and the whole thing becomes a complete mess.
What is your favourite ice-cream flavour?
Raspberry gelato if we're going Italian but if we're at a rubbish ice-cream van in England then chocolate.
What is one goal you'd like to accomplish in your lifetime?
Say a sentence that wasn't sarcastic.
Who do you consider your biggest rival?
Umm... I don't really have a rival... the only thing I can think of where I actually have someone who could be referred to as a rival is in the competitive draft based Pokémon league that I run. We call him Yoshi and alongside me, he's the most experienced in the league and I guess I could call him my rival.
If you could have an endless supply of any one food, what would it be and why?
Now that's a toughie. Probably something that's not special so that it no longer becomes special. Bread maybe? My family goes through a lot of bread, that would probably be useful to have an endless supply of. Or maybe tea? Do teabags count? If so, I'll go for teabags but if not, I'll go with bread.
Weirdest compliment you've been told?
I was once called cute. That was pretty weird.
Without looking up anything, what do you know about the American Revolution?
Is that the one with Lincoln? North vs South? Something about guerrilla warfare. Wait, that's the civil war isn't it? Is that different from the revolution? Urgh, I know nothing about America.
Which season do you prefer: spring, summer, autumn, or winter?
Winter is cold but has Christmas, summer is nice and warm but can get too hot, autumn is anybody's guess. If I have to pick one as my favourite for whatever reason, I guess I'd go with spring because for about one week in May, the weather is just right.
If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
Minimum effort, maximum reward.
What item do you currently not own, but you would like to have?
The first thing that popped into my head was a Nintendo Switch.
Is there an invention that you hope someone will create soon?
A robot to do all of my chores.
If you were to change your name to something else permanently, what would it be?
Jeff. (It's an inside joke)
Share a description of your most prized possession.
It's kinda pinkish, looks a bit like a cauliflower and is located within my cranium.
What is a beverage that you wouldn't mind swimming in?
Water.
Would you rather spend a day with your worst enemy or a year without your best friend?
Given that I don't really have enemies I'd definitely go with a day with my worst enemy. Besides, I could probably sleep through most of that day and I'd barely notice them.
What's the story behind your current profile pic?
My favourite Pokémon is Ampharos and my favourite evil team is Team Rocket. When I first made my Wattpad account, I was writing a Team Rocket book and one of the characters had an Ampharos so I decided to spend 4 hours on Paint making an Ampharos in Team Rocket Uniform. Looks pretty awesome if you ask me!
What's something you feel is severely underappreciated?
My talent.
What's on your New Year's Resolution List for 2018?
I don't make New Year's Resolutions. Why should the date changing affect how I live my life?
Funniest G-rated joke you've been told?
Oh, that's just impossible. You want me to dig out every joke I've ever heard from my brain and try and decide the funniest? And what counts as G-rated? If kids don't understand it is it G-Rated? Come back to me on this.
Can you sing or dance?
Can't dance at all. Can sing if the song is right for my voice (at a stretch). Pretty bad given that I was in a theatre group for 7 years.
What was your first-ever completed story about?
When I was 6 I wrote a short story about me and my favourite Teddy, Bubba, fending off the evil were-teddies. They were trying to lick us to death but we beat them by singing a lullaby. I'm not even joking. That was the plot.
Are you working on any new works currently?
I'm trying to plan for the sequel to Zam the Hybrid but progress is slow. When I'm not so busy, hopefully I'll find the mood for it.
Would you rather throw out all your games or delete all your works on Wattpad?
I get that this is supposed to be a really difficult question but for me it's extremely simple. I'd delete my Wattpad works in a heartbeat. They could be rewritten and reposted elsewhere but the work that's gone into my games could never be recreated. I've spent thousands of hours on Pokémon alone and I have so many memories associated with so many Pokémon that I just couldn't give up.
Which Pokémon do you consider the cutest?
I don't really pay attention to cute Pokémon, they tend to not be my favourites. Probably Sylveon.
Besides Pokémon, what other fandoms are you into?
I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel, Doctor Who, Sherlock and probably a few others that I'm forgetting or I just don't realise counts as a fandom. Does Yu-gi-oh count?
What's the best prank you've played on someone?
I can't think of one off the top of my head.
What advice can you offer beginning writers?
Start out by doing what you want to do. If you've got a good idea, have some fun writing it and don't worry too much about certain technical aspects. If you enjoy it and want to improve, ask people to review your work and they can point out areas for you to improve but never let go of why you started. Always enjoy what you're doing!
What do you like best about being a critic for the GRA?
I feel like I'm part of the community now. Before I was some bloke posting on Wattpad but now I'm a part of this little group and it's all thanks to the GRA!
Do you have a favourite cliché? What's your worst?
I like it when there's either a clutch evolution in the heat of battle or when the main character somehow manages to turn things around at the last moment. Things like this keep battles fresh and exciting, even if they are a bit cliché!
