so basically evie went to school with tate and they both suffered with the same mental illness and they fall in love. later in their life, she gets closer to him and they both killed the students at school and they are also both killed together holding hands by SWAT.

after violet moves in with her family, he sees both teens in her house but they can't see each other. when tate starts to fall in love with violet, that's when evie can suddenly see tate again.

so basically when they were shot, he made a promise to evie to love her forever, even when he's dead.
