You're a college student studying at Lynchburg College in Virginia. It's a nice place, with lots of thing to do and see. Historic gardens, riverfront parks, hiking trails, and a lot of history. Over all, it's a beautiful city that you're glad to be apart of.
You absolutely love the James River, the sound it makes as it rushes past, the smell of local bakeries and restaurants as you walk beside it.
Your favourite restaurant is Olive Garden on 4038 Wards Road, and you try to go there whenever your budget allows.
But, right now you talk to your roommate. She's bragging about her boyfriend, and their outfits for the Masquerade Ball that's happening tonight.
Frankly, you're not too excited, but you swore that you'd go with her. You picked out a simple, yet elegant f/c dress and a matching mask to wear.
You groan and roll your eyes, not even pretending to listen to her as you skim through the pages of the book in your lap. It's a book for History Class on famous bank robberies. Frankly you couldn't be less interesting in it, but hey, it beats listening to your roommate's speech.
"-and everyone's gonna be there! I'm so excited! Your dress is absolutely gorgeous, and mine is too of course, but I bet you'll attract a boyfriend with that dress! Y/n? Are you listening?" She snaps her hand infant of your face a few times, and you look up.
"What? I'm reading here!"
"As I was saying," she continues, casting you a glare, "You look amazing! Everybody's gonna be checking you out."
You try to stifle a smile, "You really think so?"
"Yeah! You're a total guy-magnet in that dress!"
You smile fully, and cast your book aside. An hour till the ball. Not a lot to do, so you spray some perfume on and listen to your roomie gossip.
An hour flies by, and before you know it, she's dragging you out of the room and towards the ballroom. You giggle and follow her, your dress trailing behind you magnificently. Happily, you clutch her arm as you both run into the room.
There's people everywhere, all dressed up in nice outfits. Most of them are twirling on the dance floor, but there are a few people around some tables. My roommate sees her boyfriend and runs over to him, leaving me alone, surrounded by other masked people.
Everyone seems to have a dance partner except you, so you stand there for awhile, waiting for someone to sweep you onto the dance floor.
After half an hour of standing, you give up and walk to an empty table. You plunk your head on the tabletop and fight back tears.
Of course this would happen! Your roommate seemed to think that you'd have guys fawning all over you, but she was so wrong.
You take off the mask you were wearing and toss it to the floor. I'm leaving this dump! But before you can a voice interrupts.
"Excuse me miss? Would you care to dance?"
You look up, wondering if the man could be talking to you. He wears a handsome green suit with an equally green bowler hat. A gloved hand reaches for yours, and you smile shyly before taking it.
"I'd love to."
He pulls you into the dancing and twirls you around to the fast-paced music. His faint smile is mysterious and his eyes are brimming with queries.
"Why were you sitting all alone?" He starts conversation, never missing a step.
You glance down shyly as he spins you again, "No one asked me to dance."
"Really? An attractive girl like you?"
You blush, "You think I'm pretty?"
"Well, that depends. Beauty isn't only skin-deep you know. Beauty within is just as, if not more, important than looks."
Your eyes widen at this remark, "I completely agree. People are often deceived by outside appearances, and tend to ignore what's important."
He gazes at you in a new perspective, as you continue to dance. The song switches though, and the lights dim. A long, slow song starts to play.
The man draws you in closer and starts to slow dance with you. And you smile.
"I don't know your name," you state, turning to glance at his face.
"People call me the Riddler."
"Hmm, my name's Y/n L/n. It's a pleasure to meet you Riddler."
After a short pause, you continue, "What brings you to Lynchburg, Riddler? I haven't seen you around here before. I'm assuming you're from out of town?"
"Yes, I came here to rob a bank."
You chuckle at his response, but when he doesn't join in, you look at him quizzically. "You're joking, right?"
Now he smirks and whispers, "No."
You let out a low hum, "Well, that's an interesting bit of information. Which bank, may I ask?"
"Wells Fargo, if you must know."
The music is soothing, a beautiful melody in your ears, but it's in the background. You are solely focused on this strange, handsome man. The Riddler.
"Good choice. In fact, I have just been doing some reading on famous bank robberies. Such an interesting topic, I must say."
The music stops and changes into another fast-paced song.
"Would you be interested in joining me for dinner?" Riddler says, smiling at you.
You consider this for a moment before replying, "I'd be delighted to."
You walk with him and before you know it, you're at your favourite restaurant, Olive Garden. You sit down at a nice table and order.
"So, tell me more about yourself." Riddler says as you wait for the food.
"Well, my passion is fashion design, I'm attending Lynchburg College, and I love Olive Garden. What else is there to know?" You joke.
He smirks.
You talk for a long time, and each question and answer makes you feel closer to this mysterious person. Long after the food arrived and was swallowed, you keep talking.
You really like him, he's quite nice, mysterious and funny. He makes you laugh, and feel something you haven't really felt before.
You have a desire to keep talking, but your waiter informs you that the restaurant is closing.
Riddler scowls, but you smile sadly, nod, and pay the bill despite his insistence to pay.
"May I walk you home, Y/n? It's dark out, and you shouldn't walk home alone."
You smile at his generosity and gratefully accept his offer.
Linking your arm with his, you lean against him, warming yourself against his side. He allows you to lean into him and walks you back to your dorm.
You lead the way to your room, and once there ask him for his number. His lips quirk into a smile, as he pushes up his glasses and programs his number into your phone as you do the same with his.
"You know, I've never met anyone quite like you." He comments, leaning against the doorpost.
You grin back, "I can say the same about you."
"I can grow fast, I can die slow, I can be a joy and pain as you may already know. What am I?" He says, rushed.
"A...a relationship?"
"Correct..." He confirms before slowly leaning down uncertainly.
You tilt your head towards him and meet his lips with yours.
He breaks off and asks you another riddle, "I can make people happy I can make people cry, I can make people want me and I can drive people crazy. What am I?"
You smile, "Love."
You kiss him again, more passionately this time.
"I-I have to go, but I promise I'll see you again."
You frown at this statement.
"I swear on my life." Then he sighs and starts to leave before coming back.
He hands you his hat and then kisses your cheek.
And you watch him leave, with sadness in your heart and a smile on your face.
Hope you enjoyed!
