News - Part 9 - Alfred x Reader

Alfred quickly made his way through the corridors of the hospital. He had always been cool in combat; he had been part of the Special Forces for goodness' sake, so was perfectly capable of controlling his emotions; to keep his head while all those around him, were losing theirs. Yet when he had opened the door to find two uniformed officers standing there; he had lost all of that control. The Englishman not really taking in much after they had said something about (Y/n) being caught in some kind of ambush, and she that was now in hospital. Alfred reluctantly leaving Bruce in the care of the officers, before racing out of Wayne Manor; not sure how he had arrived at the hospital in one piece, given how he had been driving, but he had. Now, if he could just find the woman that he loved and get some answers as to what the hell had happened; he might stop losing his mind. This all only seeming worse, as not even twenty-four hours earlier, he had finally asked (Y/n) to marry him.

He knew that he had left popping the question, far longer than he should have done. That he should probably have got down on one knee and asked her to be his, the night that she had told him that she was pregnant. It not that it was just the right thing to do, as far as he was concerned; but because he truly loved her. And after the loss of Thomas and Martha, she was what he needed; something wonderful. And he couldn't wait to become her husband; to become a father. But given the fact that (Y/n) had been being shot at, and he was now running through the corridors of the hospital; some awful thoughts were taking over his mind. Awful visions of him standing over more graves; mourning the life that he could have had. His frayed nerves not easing any, as he rounded yet another corner, and saw Bullock and Gordon standing in the corridor, talking quietly to one another.

                                                             >>------------------------------<<

After the SWAT team had taken out the crazy sniper who, just for good measure, had let one last shot fly at (Y/n)'s position before dying; an awful, eerie silence had taken over the scene. Neither Jim nor Harvey knowing what to do for a moment, when (Y/n) had not answered their latest call, telling her not to move until they had made sure that the threat had been properly dealt with. Both of them hoping for some sarcastic comment to be thrown back; the pair fighting every urge to race over to the car to make sure that she was alright, when all they were greeted with, was more silence. Jim and Harvey sure that they had never moved so quickly in their lives, as they had when they had gotten the all clear from the SWAT team commander. The two rooted to the spot as they had finally got to the downed female detective; greeted by a sight, that neither had expected. Now here they were, standing in some corridor of the hospital; just hoping that everything would be alright.

"What do you think?" Jim finally asked, as a nurse came out of (Y/n)'s room and just passed by.

"Made of tough stuff; that's what I think." Harvey replied. Jim sighing heavily and nodding. The images of the EMTs racing over to the car; and of him and Harv being pushed out of the way so that they could do their job, still fresh in his mind. Harvey telling some of the uniformed officers to go to Wayne Manor and tell Alfred that he was needed at the hospital; before the pair had followed the ambulance. The younger detective sure that the drive, even with all the lights and sirens, had taken hours.

"This is gonna take some explaining. I'm not looking forward to writing up the report on this one." Harvey continued, taking the hat from his head and combing his fingers through his hair; before leaning back against the wall. The strange feeling in the pit of his stomach not getting any better, as he turned his thoughts from reports to what they would say to Alfred when he finally got there. This never how he had expected things to go, when he and Jim had found out what was going on between (Y/n) and the butler. The pair doing everything they could to keep her as safe as possible, and quite liking the notion of the honorary title of uncle, when the little Pennyworth came into the world..........

"Where is she............?!" A heavy voice suddenly asked. Jim and Harvey turning to see a frantic looking Alfred. It obvious that he had been running; it also obvious that he was far from happy. Though who was going to feel the brunt of his anger, well, that was anyone's guess at this moment.

"In that room........" Jim replied, as pointed to the door across the corridor, grabbing hold of Alfred's arm as he went to push the door open.

"The doctors they............."

"Is there a Mister Pennyworth here?" A voice interrupted. The three men now turning to see that a nurse was standing in the doorway to the room, looking at them.

"I........yeah, I'm.......I'm Alfred Pennyworth." Alfred replied, straightening his waistcoat, before taking a step forward.

"Well then, you better come in." The nurse continued, taking a step to the side so that Alfred could make his way into the room. The former member of the SAS, looking over to the bed where (Y/n) lay; not caring as a single tear made its way from the corner of his eye.
