Chapter Nine: We'll fix you
"Google--I mean Mark, what the Hell are you thinking?! You're injured, we can't go back like this!"
"I have to, okay Sean? We can't waste time here."
"You're gonna' get yourself killed! And who's Sean?!"
"No time to explain. You'll figure it out once we've got ( y/n ) and everyone's memories back."
It had hardly been a minute after 'Google' had got his memory back when he'd suddenly darted out of the room and then the building entirely, not waiting for Jack at all in his sudden state of courage and causing the Irish bot to have to limp after him until he managed to catch up. Now here they were, darting through alleyways to avoid being seen bloodied and beaten by people walking around in the night as the two of them headed to the same building they had escaped from only an hour or so before. Whatever 'Google' had remembered had caused an immediate change in him and despite his programming he led the way hurriedly, not wanting to waste any more time lazing around and trying to patch himself up; even if his body was still aching from that fight with Aaron, there were more important things to attend to right now.
"Do you have any plan whatsoever?!" Jack hissed worriedly as he followed as quickly as he could, struggling to move at the same speed and having to hold one hand over the cut he got on his head from where it had clashed with the TV stand earlier. For a moment 'Google'--no, Mark went completely silent as he slowed ever so slightly, thinking for himself for the first time in a very long while.
"Go there and... Stop what they're doing to people." He merely mumbled softly, causing Jack to frown in irritation at his incredibly vague and downright ridiculous plan. It took him a few seconds to catch up properly so he could look at Mark's expression, glaring in annoyance at the emotional bot yet struggling to keep up.
"Oh that's really going to help, y'know? We'll just go in and ask politely for them to stop being meanies, give us back everything and fix us up, right? Then we'll all live happily ever after! I'm sure they'll understand and stop their robots from attacking us, it's sooooooooo simple!" Jack mocked sarcastically as he waved around his arm to emphasise how ridiculous the idea was, gaining a glare from Mark as the corner of his mouth twitched into a grimace.
"We'll figure it out when we get there." He huffed as he sped up slightly but then suddenly hunched over and slumped his side against the wall, gritting his teeth to stop himself cursing as he held his hand to his stomach tightly from the wave of pain. It was only then Jack's look of anger disappeared from his face and he stepped closer to Mark calmly, moving his arm around the others back so he could help him stand rather than just allowing him to fall to the floor.
"We did that last time and this is what happened. I don't know what you think you're made of, but if something like this happens again I don't think you'll make it after." Jack admitted gently as he watched Mark's pained expression with concern and slowly began to get him to stand upright again.
"Something has to be done..." He muttered stubbornly, not even able to look at the other bot until he moved so he was in front of him to block his path. The two were silent for a moment as Jack watched his friend carefully, closing his only normal eye and allowing the strangely coloured one to scan Mark as the two stood still.
"It can't be done when you have broken ribs, Mark. We just need to get fixed up first and--" He spoke but was suddenly interrupted as Mark shoved past him and rushed off ahead without another word, still slightly hunched over as he put up with the agony as best as he could. Jack sighed as he saw him hurry off and limped after the other bot as fast as he could, struggling to keep up his pace. It seemed like forever until they were finally at the back of the store again, both standing still as soon as they saw the door Mark had broken open merely hours before. There was no light inside and neither of them were moving towards the door, just watching it for a moment for any signs of life.
"Maybe ( y/n ) got out...?" Mark suggested quietly, too nervous about what could be in there to raise his voice in any way at all. Of course he wanted to save her if she was in there, but who knew what the Hell he would find in that place: especially with the bots that had attacked them before. When they'd gone to the store they seemed so... Normal. What the Hell had happened to them?
"She didn't, Mark." Jack stated simply, not wanting to go into detail about what he saw considering Mark's already irrational train of thought. Even though there was no signs of life from outside he kept his voice lowered too, despite not being the quietest person he knew when not to speak up. The two of them didn't say a word as they waited for a few more seconds, thinking about this whole situation as rationally as they possible could.
"... Do you remember where you found my memory core?" Mark suddenly asked with a slight frown, furrowing his eyebrows as he tried to think of how useful this could be. It took a moment for the Irish bot to nod, although slightly confused with why he was bringing this up at all.
"Near the back of the room, why?" He asked curiously but gained no response as Mark began slowly walking into the building, one arm still wrapped around his stomach as he stepped as quietly as technologically possible. Jack almost reached out to stop him but merely shook his head instead, watching as the fellow bot disappeared into the darkness. As soon as he'd became completely enveloped in the dark his eyes lit up again, causing him to flinch in surprise this time as they provided torch-like beams of light in whatever direction he looked.
"What the Hell..." Mark whispered in almost awe as he blinked a few times to test it out before he realised he was getting off-task and continuing to walk on ahead. The room was unnerving familiar but different at the same time, although he could see the small puddle of dried blood from where he'd taken a beating earlier. It caused him to immediately shiver at the thought and move his arm a little tighter around his stomach, almost protecting it in case something tried to attack again; however as soon as he saw the shelf at the back of the room he headed towards it, no longer guarding his stomach as he began searching through the boxes carefully. The amount of metallic parts made it difficult to be quiet and he cringed every time the pieces hit each other, not moving for a few seconds to make sure he hadn't been heard before he continued scavenging for exactly what they needed.
"Are you really doing this?" Jack commented worriedly as he limped towards Mark, causing the latter to flinch and immediately put his hand to his heart as he realised it wasn't someone dangerous. He didn't turn towards his friend as he continued searching, desperate not to waste any time if he could help it. The Irish bot sighed as he stayed where he stood, resting a hand on the shelf to keep himself balanced as he watched without another word.
"Jack, you need to search the other shelf, we need to do this as quickly as possible if we want to get everyone's memory cores back." Mark ordered as he kept searching hurriedly yet carefully, looking around to make sure no-one else was in the room before he moved onto the next box along to find what he needed. There was a pause as he picked up a memory chip he could only think belonged to Jack, nodding as he held it tightly in his hand and began searching for the others.
"No." Jack stated bluntly, making Mark instantly stop what he was doing and turn to look at his friend in complete and utter confusion. Neither said anything for a few seconds, the more human of the two awaiting some sort of explanation whilst his friend avoided eye contact completely.
"What do you mean 'No'?" Mark questioned slowly, stepping closer as Jack turned his head away completely so he didn't have to look at the other bots expression. He didn't understand in the slightest why Jack was acting so hostile towards him at all, especially since ( y/n ) had saved the both of them. Why couldn't he return the favour?
"We're both injured and have no idea what the Hell we're doing, Mark. And don't you dare forget the fact that those guys are the new models for Google bots and you know what we are? The first prototypes. You think we're built to survive against them?!" Jack hissed as he struggled to keep his voice down, fidgeting where he stood as he tried to contain his frustration by leaning against the shelf and running his fingers through his hair.
"So what, we just give up? Leave ( y/n ) here so we can save our own skins whilst they do God knows what to her and my--our friends?" Mark argued as he stepped closer, never moving his gaze from his conflicted friend as he tried to think of how to explain himself properly.
"We go back, get ourselves fixed up, maybe even call the police and then come back here. That way we'll be able to at least defend ourselves if we need to." He suggested uneasily as he glanced at the walls rather than the other bot, unable to put his thoughts into words logically without his voice box sparking.
"It'll be too late then, we have to help them now! This isn't like you, Sean." Mark practically pleaded as he tried to figure out what the Hell was going on in his friend's mind, although his words finally caused his fellow bot's patience to snap.
"I don't know who the Hell Sean is, I don't know what you remember about him but I am not him, Mark. My name has always been Jack, no matter what you say about the guy I was before. I don't even know if I want to be him at all, don't you get it?!" Jack blurted out angrily as he finally faced Mark, gesturing widely with his arms as he tried to stop himself from shouting in his fit of desperation. Mark merely stared in shock for a few seconds, taking in everything he'd said before he reached forward and grabbed Jack's hand without even noting how he flinched in response. He placed Jack's memory core into his hand carefully before stepping away again slowly, watching him with disappointment.
"Sean wasn't a coward." Mark stated solemnly before he walked towards the only other door in the room, not even glancing back as he opened the door and went through it. Jack stared at the door wordlessly and glanced down as he held the memory core shakily, holding onto it tighter as he wiped his tears away with the back of his hand and cursing under his breath at his own stupidity.
Mark clenched his fists as he closed the door behind him, staring at the handle for a few seconds before he turned his back to it and kept walking without daring to look back. The room was much smaller and strangely empty, only a few metal drawers and a computer on a desk visible. He began walking towards the computer curiously, gritting his teeth from the sharp pain in his stomach but ignoring it as he pressed the on button. As soon as the screen turned on it glitched, only showing lines and lines of numbers in what he assumed to be coding for something. Even with his new-found memory capabilities he couldn't be bothered to memorise it, stepping away from the desk and merely heading to the next door to see what else he could find.
This room was much larger, with wires and machines all over the place as if this had been built by one person rather than people from Google. But that wasn't what scared Mark the most out of everything in this room. What scared him most was the metal tables set up in long lines all around the room and connected to the machines, each around seven foot long. Mark stared in shock as he walked between two lines of tables, clenching his fists as he saw what was laid upon each of them.
"What the Hell..." He mumbled softly as he looked at each table, a person laid on each one and hooked up with wires to the machines seemingly just to keep them asleep. He glanced to one on his left and froze as he instantly recognised the man laid there, although his glasses weren't on his face and wires were attached to a metallic 'upgrade' on his neck, even though he still seemed almost completely human.
"Tyler...?! Tyler can you hear me?!" Mark hissed as quietly as possible, still not trying to be noticed if the others were around and moving his hand forward to shake Tyler's shoulder. Before he even touched him he decided against it, looking at the fragile equipment that was attached to his friend that was undoubtedly keeping him alive. He didn't want to but he walked on, looking from person to person in horror as he saw them all and recognised them slowly but surely. He could see Suzy, Barry and Ross in the second row, all of them unmoving just like everyone else even as Mark continued to make his way towards the front. As he got closer to the end of the room the people seemed to have more robotic features ingrained in their skin, as if it had just been put into them as the skin around it was just beginning to heal.
"( y/n )?!" Mark stepped closer as he saw her, just like the others yet not a single piece of metal attached to her skin besides a needle in her hand to keep something pumping through her veins, as well as tubes in her nose just like the others that was likely leading to her stomach in some strange 'tube feeding' contraption. He moved his hand to her shoulder and hesitated for a moment before shaking it lightly, able to this time seeing as she didn't have fragile equipment all over her or a potentially dangerous problem with the metal 'upgrades' the others had.
"( y/n ) can you hear me? You need to get up right now." He muttered nervously as he shook her shoulder a little harder before waiting fearfully as she didn't respond, merely waiting before he sighed in relief as she frowned slightly in annoyance and her eyes began to open.
"Google...? W-What... What happened?" ( y/n ) asked quietly as she struggled to speak, her throat sore and causing her voice to be rough as she blinked for a moment before she was able to look around from where she was laid. Mark smiled weakly as he moved his hair out of his eyes, reaching over and taking her hand in his as he tried to keep her calm.
"I'll explain when we get back, for now we need to get you unhooked from all of this before we have company. Are you okay?" He asked gently, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze as he placed his other hand on her back and carefully helped her to sit up. ( y/n ) winced slightly but nodded in response to his question, dealing with the pain as she became all too aware of their surroundings and looked around in horror.
"What the Hell is this...?" She mumbled shakily as she looked around at all of the other people throughout the room, grimacing slightly as Mark gently pulled the needle out of the hand and applied pressure with his own hand over it to make sure it didn't bleed too badly. Mark went to speak but froze as he heard the door open, turning to look down at the other end of the room and staring in fear as someone stepped just close enough that he could see his face.
"I remember!" Jack spoke as he limped slightly closer, his face lit up in awe as he saw his friend only twelve feet away and grinning happily as he saw him. As soon as Mark saw his expression he smiled brightly back as he understood that he'd put in his memory core, causing ( y/n ) to look from one to the other in confusion but smile nonetheless at their seemingly happy expressions. Neither of them saw the other figure in the shadows that had quietly appeared behind Jack as the Irish man stared in happiness at his newfound memories. Before Mark uttered even a single syllable, Aaron's arm forced itself into a short arc and his clenched fist flew through Jack's chest.
Jack immediately choked, his eyes widening in sudden shock as he looked down to the bloodied arm that was protruding from his chest and trembled as he tried to tell himself this wasn't really happened. Mark stood completely still as he watched, his eyes wide in fear as he saw Jack look up from his injury to stare directly at him in terror as blood trickled down the side of his mouth. It wasn't a childlike sort of terror where a clown jumps in front of your face, but rather the kind you see in an injured animal that was pinned to the ground but still scrambling to get free in a desperate attempt to survive.
"M-Mark... I r-remembered... I-I..." Jack could barely get the words out as he shakily raised his hand and reached it out towards Mark as he stood frozen, his friend's eyes wide in horror as he watched Aaron pull his arm out of Jack's chest and wipe it to get the blood off. Jack placed a hand to the hole in his chest and choked as he tried taking a single, slow step forward before he slumped to the floor and didn't utter another word as he lay completely still. His eyes were wide in fear but they no longer glowed, glazing over as he stopped struggling to breathe and instead laid motionless.
"J-Jack...?!" Mark called out shakily as ( y/n ) held her hands over her mouth, staring in shock as Jack didn't move any longer. Aaron immediately turned his gaze from the body on the floor to the other intruder, his pupils glowing red as he shook the blood off of his arm and understood what he had to do.
"Jack, you h-have to get up... J-Jack...?!" Mark's voice cracked as he attempted to step forward but fell to his knee's, unable to move his gaze from Jack's body even as Aaron stepped over it and moved towards him slowly. ( y/n ) tried to get up but yelped as a bot grabbed her from behind, holding their hand over her mouth and wrapping their other arm around her torso to pin her arms to her sides as Mark didn't move at all. Aaron stepped closer and knelt down, glaring into Mark's eyes yet somehow appearing emotionless at the same time.
"Your name isn't Mark. You're a Google prototype, nothing more and nothing less." He stated as he grabbed Mark's chin with his bloodied hand and forced the stunned man to look at him. Aaron let go and stood up, stepping behind Mark calmly as he shakily lifted a hand to his face and felt the blood that had been left on it.
"A G-Google prototype..." Mark barely whispered as he moved his hand so he could look at it, able to see the red of the blood over it even through his tears. Aaron merely hummed in reply, picking up the nearest pipe before turning so he was facing Mark's back and slowly lifting it into the air with both hands.
"That's right. You're just like us." Aaron stated almost softly, his lips forming into a sadistic grin before he slammed the pipe down against Mark's skull and watched his head hit the ground. ( y/n ) squirmed and attempted to scream but it was muffled by the bot's hand, although the noise was just loud enough to get Aaron's attention. He turned towards her calmly, holding the bloodied pipe up so it was rested on his shoulder as he practically smirked at the weaker being.
"Don't panic, he'll be fine soon. We're going to make him and you all better..." He explained, stepping closer as ( y/n ) desperately tried to get out of the other bot's grip as she watched Aaron approaching, trying to scream but to no avail as the bot moved his hand over her mouth and nose to starve her of air. She struggled for a minute or so but then stopped moving altogether, making it easier for the other bot to reinsert the needle into her vein whilst Aaron's gaze turned to Jack's body.
"After you're done reconnecting her, take him to the scrap room. He's useless right now but he'll be good for spare parts." He commented stoicly, gaining a nod from the other bot as he finished moving ( y/n )'s arms back to her sides and almost nervously walked past Aaron to pick up Jack's remains. Aaron glanced back down to Mark, kneeling down and shaking his head as he saw the bloodied cut on the back of Mark's head from where he'd hit him with the pipe.
"We're going to fix you up, Google. We're going to make you forget all of those silly human memories you think you had." Aaron stated almost happily to Mark's unconscious body, grinning as he grabbed onto the collar of his shirt and stood up. Slowly he began dragging him towards a door, chuckling as he kicked it open.
"We're going to fix you."
