The whole summer program group meets in one of the empty rooms on the ninth floor. The place is cleared out of all furniture, with wooden floors in a square perimeter. A window looks out to the beach, giving us a perfect view of bluish gray waves rolling in. We settle in while the chaperone, Mrs. Jo, calls out our names and makes sure that everyone is present. Once everyone is seated in a half circle, she begins with the agenda.
"We've prepared a game to make sure everyone gets to know each other better," she says. "It's called The Number Game! Have any of you ever heard of it?"
"Oh!" Yeonjun calls out. "I've heard of this one."
Half of the room sways in light of his voice. I don't think anyone has gotten used to the fact that we're joined by the TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
"Well, I'll explain it just in case." Mrs. Jo seems to be blushing along with everyone else. Yeonjun just has that effect on people, I guess. "So, I'll play some music in the background. Everyone has to circle the room while the track is playing. Then, I'll stop the music and call out a number. You have to form into groups of the number I call. Everyone who doesn't find a group is automatically out. You'll have to sit in the center and cheer on the others."
"Woohoo!" Beomgyu pumps a fist in the air. "I'm ready."
"In honor of our special guests," Mrs. Jo continues, "we'll be playing some TXT tracks for this game. Is everyone ready?"
She doesn't give us much time to respond. Soon, "Our Summer" is blasting from her handheld speaker, and the room is forced to respond. We start to circle the room in a clockwise fashion. Everyone looks a bit awkward at first, but we get into the groove of things with the encouragement of Huening Kai's clapping and Taehyun's head bobbing. I guess TXT wants everyone to have a good time, and they're doing a great job at showing a relaxed version of themselves. Soon, the room begins to let loose. There's dancing as we circle the room. The melody infuses itself into everyone's bones. With every lyric that passes, the students get more and more into a partying mode.
"Four!" Mrs. Jo calls out once the music stops.
Everyone crashes into each other, and laughter and shrieks emit from the crowd. I think I hear Huening Kai's dolphin scream, and to the right of me Yeonjun glues himself to three other students.
Beomgyu, being next to me, naturally grabs my hand and begins to search for two others. We find a pair of two German girls and attach ourselves to them. Beomgyu gives them a sheepish smile. "Hello," he says. I smile at seeing him flustered in the presence of two pretty girls.
"Hello," one of the girls says. She blushes while being pressed close to him.
Never mind. My face heats up in jealousy. Even though I know Beomgyu may be naturally attracted to some of the students here, my body tenses in reluctance to that thought.
Three people are out. One of them is Soobin, who sulks while he sits in the middle.
The music starts up again. This time, the mumble rapping of "Cat & Dog" fills the room, the charming voices of our favorite idol group. I circle the room, following Beomgyu. He does a little shimmy whenever he thinks Mrs. Jo will stop the music. I laugh when he sticks out his tongue at Soobin. His leader rolls his eyes in response, swiveling to face the other direction.
"Let's form an alliance, Jayden," Beomgyu says, looking back over his shoulder.
"Okay," I say, my former jealousy erased. I don't think I could ever get used to Beomgyu treating me like a close friend.
My mind takes me back to Hawaii as we dance around to TXT's repertoire. I remember introducing my boyfriend to TXT, back when we were still together. He rolled his eyes. "You're going to become one of those crazy K-pop fans," he had said. "Promise me you won't embarrass yourself like that."
I paused the "CROWN" video and faced him with shame burning in my heart. "It's normal for me to like good music."
"Not so normal for you to fond over pretty boys who will never notice you," he responded.
From then until our breakup, I was careful not to bring up TXT again. I knew that he'd find a way to make me feel less-than for being a TXT fan. For devoting my attention to a group he considered to be manufactured and fake compared to the artists that he likes.
If he could see me now, dancing while sandwiched between Beomgyu and the other TXT members, I wonder what he would think. I think he would be more shocked than jealous. I don't know if he'd be happy for me. He'd probably roll his eyes and call me hopeless and obsessed under his breath.
I take a deep breath. I center myself and draw my attention back into this room. This hotel off the coast of Boryeong. Enough about my ex. I'm here with TXT, and with forty or so others who've made the trip to Korea to etch some priceless memories into their minds. I'm here to forget about the boy who mocked me for admiring a group who I'd meet in the near future.
"Three!" Mrs. Jo calls out.
Beomgyu grabs me and crashes us into Huening Kai's tall frame. I gasp, and my shock turns to laughter as Beomgyu bulldozes our group into the corner of the room.
"You're taking this game very seriously," I tell him.
Mrs. Jo calls out numbers while we listen to the entirety of The Dream Chapter: Star. I dance along with the other students. I forget about my heartbreak. I collide into Beomgyu more times than I can count.
Soon, Beomgyu and I are one of the only ones left. The other three are Taehyun, Yeonjun, and a girl from Hong Kong.
"Three!" Mrs. Jo calls out.
Beomgyu and I join forces again. We have to get a hold of Yeonjun, pulling him away from the clutches of the other two trying to win. Pulling with all my might, we extricate him away from Taehyun and the girl. Beomgyu shouts toward the ceiling with the voice of a Viking.
"I think we have our three winners!" Mrs. Jo announces. "We'll give you three gift vouchers that you can use here in Boryeong."
Beomgyu embraces me with a hug. He calls out to the entire room. "We did it!"
I stay pressed close to him. I could cry out of joy right now. I don't care about everyone else who's watching. Beomgyu has proven to me that I could feel special again. Once more, I can find belonging.
