The Breaking Point
Disclaimer: I do not own Star Wars. George Lucas and Disney own this franchise, not me. I'm too young to even be considered for ownership.
Charlotte's POV:
I wake to the sound of Mom and Dad fighting. What could they be fighting about? Shielding my force presence from Mom, the only Force-sensitive in the house right now, I crack open my door and silently creep down the hall, bare feet pressing into the soft carpet strands.
"Ben can still come back!!" I hear Mom shouting at Dad.
"He's not Ben anymore!!" Dad yells in response. "You heard what Lottie said, he tried to choke her! His own twin sister, and he tried to kill her. In cold blood." Mom doesn't respond for a second, and I can picture her hurt expression.
Mom responds in a voice so hushed that I have to strain my ears to pick up on it. "So he's like Vader then."
"Leia that's not what I-" Dad starts, trying to backtrack and apologize.
"No, it is what you meant." I silently gasp, hand cupped over my mouth so that they don't hear me. I hear the front door snap shut and I bite my lower lip. What happened? I stretch my senses out and feel Mom's presence at our kitchen table, while Dad... he's on the Falcon with Chewie? What the kriff? I don't know if I can go back to bed from this. I softly pad into my room and softly pull the door closed behind me. I start to brush out my long, chocolate-brown locks until there's no tangles. Then, I start two French braids that end in a ponytail. Not too shabby, if I don't say so myself.
I make my way downstairs to see Mom at the table with her head in her hands. "Mom?" I ask softly, trying to not startle her.
Her head lifts and she attempts a soothing smile. "Lottie, good morning. Are you hungry?"
I smile at her and walk to the fridge, standing on my tiptoes to reach the top shelf with the shurra fruit in it. Grabbing the container, I pull it out and shut the fridge door, saying, "I'm good with shurra fruit for now, Mom. Have you eaten?" Mom shakes her head.
"I have some morning meetings to go to today. They're for-" she hesitates, as if debating whether to tell me. I open the container and scoop some fruit into a small bowl for me to eat. I turn and raise my eyebrow at her.
"Mom, I'm almost twenty-five. I'm not a child anymore. You can tell me about whatever secret plan you're involved in." I stab a piece of shurra fruit with my fork and bring it to my mouth.
"Alright, Lottie. You have a point. There's no easy way to tell you this, but your brother-" the piece of shurra fruit falls off my fork.
"Ben? What's going on?" I interrupt, apologizing a second after. "Sorry, sorry. Continue?"
"Your brother is the second-in-command of a new government called the First Order. It's another Empire." I stare at Mom, disbelieving. "Some of the Senators and I are forming a Resistance." I stare at her for a second and then push my chair back. "Lottie? Where are you going?"
"I want in," I say determinedly, finishing the last of the shurra fruit. Mom opens her mouth to refuse, but I forge ahead. "I am six years older than you were when you were the Princess of Alderaan passing secret plans to the Rebellion. I am going to be part of this Resistance." Mom sighs and shakes her head.
"You have the stubbornness of both your father and I. That's not a good combination," Mom says ruefully. "Alright. You can come with me to the first debriefing of the Resistance," she reluctantly agrees. Then, she points her finger at me. "But you have to be careful." I nod my head and jog upstairs to get ready. I take my hair out of its braids and brush it out once more, pulling it up into a high ponytail. I pull on my black leggings and my light purple crop top, yanking my black T-shirt on over top. Pulling my black sneakers on, I turn to the mirror, adjusting my initial pendant necklace so it hangs directly over my collarbone. I attach my lightsaber to the belt that winds around my waist, clipping the cool metal shaft onto the hook.
I hurry back downstairs to see Mom waiting for me. She's traded her Senatorial garb for her Resistance leader outfit. It's different from both her Princess clothing and her Senator clothing. Mom raises her eyebrow at my shirt, and I shrug.
"I mean, it's true now," I defend, and Mom finds no counterpoint to my argument. We exit our house and walk towards the meeting room, where I'm certain that every single Resistance member is gathered waiting.
Arriving at the meeting room a few minutes later, I pull open the door and Mom and I enter the meeting room, Mom's shoulders straightening almost involuntarily as she passes the threshold. I smirk at all of the young members fangirling and fanboying over "the Princess Leia."
I study the people's faces and decide to sit next to one, a tall man with tan skin, dark brown hair, and sparkling brown eyes. He's paying attention to my mother, but not letting her dominate his attention. He's doing the same thing I am, studying everyone's faces. I square my shoulders and walk over to him, sitting down next to him and resting my chin on my hand.
I feel a tap on my shoulder, and I turn to see who it is. And also if I can chop their hand off with my lightsaber because don't touch me. But, then I see the same man that I'm sitting next to. I smile lightly at him and stick my hand out.
"Charlotte Solo," I introduce myself, "and yes, before you ask, daughter of the Han Solo and Leia Organa." He chuckles.
"I'm Poe. Poe Dameron. To copy your introduction, son of the Kes Dameron and Shara Bey."
I grin, a true grin. My go-to facial expression is normally a smirk, a smile, or an eye-roll; true grins are rare for me. "My mom told me about your parents," I start a conversation. "Your mom was an A-wing pilot, right?"
"Yep. I'm following in her footsteps. Well, at least I'm following in her flying expertise. I'm an X-wing pilot. You?" I think for a little while, debating whether to tell Poe I'm a Jedi Knight. Finally deciding to tell him, I turn so I'm directly facing him.
"I'm a Jedi Knight. But, I'm a good pilot." Poe grins and holds his hand up, and I slap it for a high-five. Then, Mom calls the meeting to order and Poe and I turn towards the front of the meeting room.
After the meeting...
"See you tomorrow, Poe," I say goodbye, walking over to my mother. She grins at me.
"So you've met Poe Dameron?" she says quietly to me.
"Yeah," I reply. "He's pretty interesting. Seems nice." Mom and I walk back to our apartment and she turns to me.
"Charlotte," she says, staring intently into my eyes. My shoulders straighten. She's said my full name; this must be important. "Your uncle left. He didn't say where he was going." I freeze, as still as if I've stopped breathing.
"Uncle Luke's," I start, barely being able to finish my sentence, stuttering on the last word, "g-gone?"
Mom nods her head. I shake my head, not believing her. "He's gone," she says quietly. I bite my lower lip and gather my emotions- pain, loneliness, grief at my brother, father, and uncle's disappearances.
"We will get through this, Mom," I start, determined. "You and me."
Author's Note: And there's the end of the chapter!! Next is going to be The Force Awakens and the timeline following that. There's going to be a neat introduction to each movie after the previous movie ends, so the next chapter isn't really going to be a chapter but more of a introduction. Bye!!
