Chapter 26: Good Witch, Bad Alpha
Rowena knew the exact moment Maybelle discovered she knew the truth. Her mouth tipped up and her eyes crinkled in merriment. It was a game to her.
"Ahhh...I see you found something else out," Maybelle said, standing in front of the door. "Don't keep me waiting. Who texted you? Was it Cross? Abby?"
"Jeremiah," Rowena whispered, still processing the fact that Maybelle was having an affair with Bobby and now had the motivation to kill Casey. What was it that Cross once said? Revenge is a dish best served cold.
"The male hooker?" Maybelle asked, her voice light and airy.
"Escort," Rowena corrected. "He isn't a hooker."
"And what did your male escort friend have to say, Rowena?"
"You were sleeping with Bobby, weren't you? You were his ex-lover?"
Maybelle grinned. "Can you prove that?"
"You gave him that elephant pencil holder, didn't you?"
"Yes, but it was a long time ago while he was still working at the rec center. Before he cheated on me with the likes of Casey Sloane."
"You're disgusting," Rowena hissed. "He was your stepson."
"Bobby was in his late twenties when we started seeing one another and his father had already passed away. There was nothing wrong with what we were doing. It's a shame Casey had to make him her target. Greg, our old alpha was friends with my husband. He said I betrayed my husband when I started my relationship with Bobby. He made me leave. It was all for nothing because of Casey Sloane. She had to pay for what she did!"
"Why did Wyatt leave? Were you sleeping with him too?"
Maybelle grimaced. "Of course not! Wyatt didn't want to be in the same pack as his brother. Bobby knew how he felt about Casey but he still slept with her. "
"You killed Casey."
"Someone had to do it," Maybelle said. "She made it her mission to steal every taken man around her. She had to be stopped! Do you know how many men have cheated with her? You can't tell me you aren't a little glad she's gone."
"Flint tried killing me because of that!"
"Yes." Maybelle nodded. "I convinced him you were a witch and that you killed his sister. He believed me and went after you with such gusto. Unfortunately, he found the lighter fluid, rope, and matches in my garage. He could smell his sister on a pair of gloves I used. Who knew Flint was smart enough to figure out who killed his sister?"
"You killed Flint?"
She nodded. "We struggled and I did what any woman would do. I kicked him in the family jewels and took my shot."
"And Bobby?"
"Bobby. Poor Bobby." Maybelle stepped into the middle of the room. "He was an accident. He was supposed to take the fall for Flint and Casey. Unfortunately, he decided to get involved with Flint. He abducted you."
"Yes, but he was going to let me free if I helped him win you back. He wouldn't even give me your name he was so loyal to you."
Maybelle gave a bitter laugh. "Loyalty after a betrayal isn't worthwhile, Rowena. He learned his lesson. Yes, I believe that. I also believe he loved me. But it wasn't good enough. He didn't love me enough in the first place."
"Everyone makes mistakes. You say he didn't love you enough but isn't it the other way around, Maybelle? You didn't love Bobby enough to forgive him. Instead, you killed him!"
"I told you that was an accident! You were the one who was supposed to be dead."
Both women turned as a loud growl vibrated from outside their room. Maybelle's claws tapped against the bedpost to her right. "The calvary is on the way. I guess this means I better make this quick."
Rowena threw her phone at Maybelle's head. The older woman dodged it, snickering. "Let's face it. You're no match for me. I'm a shifter. I'm stronger, faster, and deadlier than you."
Something was pounding against the door followed by a howl and more growling.
"That's Wyatt's wolf and if I had to take a guess...our alpha's growls."
"You won't get away with this," Rowena told her. "It's just you and me. Cross is going to know you killed me."
"Will he? I planned to tell him how Reed killed you before I attacked him and tossed him out. I locked the doors and waited with a dead Rowena in fear of another wolf attacking me."
"You psycho bi—"
A loud guttural scream pierced the air.
"Rowena are you in there?" Abby called out. "Cross just fought Wyatt. Reed had sent him a text that Wyatt was coming for you. Are you okay? We're trying to get the door open."
"Maybelle's a psychopath who killed everyone!" Rowena shouted.
Maybelle's mouth fell open.
"If I die, she murdered me! Make sure she suffers!"
"Oh, you're going down for that," Maybelle muttered. She rushed forward but Rowena dodged her, getting her with the stun gun.
"You're forgetting something about me, Maybelle," Rowena said, grunting as she tossed whatever she could get her hands on at the older woman. "I'm a witch!"
"Oh please, everyone knows you're not a real witch," Maybelle scoffed. "I used the fact that you cursed Reed to burn down his house and frame you."
There was more banging against the door as if someone was trying to ram into it.
"I curse you, Maybelle. I hope your claws fall off. I curse you to twist in excruciating pain each time you even think about hurting another person. I curse you to regret everyone you've killed---everyone you've hurt, Maybelle. I curse you!"
Maybelle ran toward her, claws out. Rowena lifted her arms and shrieked. Her voice was drowned out by the pained shouts of Maybelle twisting around on the floor as if someone was electrocuting her. The door slammed open and Cross flew forward. He twisted and he reached forward, grabbing Rowena and lifting her up and into his arms. She let him hold her as she stared down at Maybelle, ten sharp claws on the floor.
"This is proof," Abby said, pointing at Maybelle. "You're a witch, Rowena. We heard you curse her through the door."
"Good witch," Cross whispered, patting her head as if she were his pet.
Rowena weakly slapped his hand. "Bad alpha!"
In the past few weeks, she'd been cheated on, abducted multiple times, shot at multiple times, and almost killed by a crazed werewolf shifter. Her brown eyes caught on a small elephant earring that had flown off Maybelle's ear.
"Cross?"
"Yes, baby?"
"I really don't think elephants are good luck."
