Chapter 24: The King

Rowena was alone with Reed and Maybelle. She was staring off into space, wondering who killed Bobby. If Flint was truly shot days ago, it was impossible that he was Bobby's murderer. The idea that there was someone else trying to kill her seemed insane. She had been so sure it was Flint.

"It's going to be okay, Rowena," Reed assured her. They were sitting across from one another at Maybelle's home. Cross was with Liam and Matt, helping his pack prepare for the full moon.

"Someone killed Casey, Bobby, and Flint. You can't tell me it's going to be okay," Rowena argued. She stood up and began pacing the white oval rug Maybelle had in front of her sofa.

"Things do seem a bit wild right now," Maybelle agreed. "We were so sure Flint was your attacker and Bobby was the real murderer of Casey."

"Now, we're back to square one," Rowena groaned, tugging at her hair. "Okay, we know Casey made bets with some other wolf. I thought it was Bobby but he said he paid for his gym with an inheritance."

"An inheritance?" Maybelle asked.

Rowena nodded. "Yes. Was his father rich?"

Reed chuckled. "Yes, the man must've had money. I didn't know Bobby very well but I've been to his gym and Casey used to tell me how his father would spend money on his wives and children. He seemed like a good man."

"Just because he had an inheritance, doesn't necessarily mean Bobby wouldn't have helped Casey," Maybelle said. "They had slept together. He was kicked out of Nightshade around the same time I left. Casey ruined that rec center but I don't believe that was the sole reason he was exiled."

"Do you think Flint asked him to be kicked out?" Reed asked. "Greg adored Flint, according to what Wyatt said."

Maybelle shrugged. "It's possible. Are you sure Flint is dead?"

"Do you think Greg would've lied to us?"

Maybelle's voice hardened. "I wouldn't trust that man if I were you. He's a devious alpha."

"Really? He looked like a tired old man." Rowena plopped herself back on the sofa. She looked over at a clock Maybelle had on the wall shaped like an elephant. Reed believed elephants were lucky but she was starting to think they were unlucky.

"He had a pencil holder on his desk with a zebra and an elephant. Reed is wearing an elephant shirt. Maybelle, your house is full of elephants. I better get some good luck."

Maybelle opened her mouth to say something when Rowena's phone rang. It was Cross. He told her he'd be at Maybelle's within the hour. Rowena noticed she had several texts from Gina and Jeremiah. Gina reassured her everything would be okay and that Little Mikey was excited for their next undercover gig. Jeremiah said he was able to get the friend of the friend who knew Bobby's ex-lover. As soon as he had any details, he'd let her know.

"You said Casey's dog was named King, wasn't it?" Maybelle asked.

"That's right," Rowena said, nodding. "Do you have any clue who it could be?"

"Well, I was just thinking about anyone who had a narcissist problem. Wouldn't that person refer to them as a king? Do we know anyone with a big ego?" Maybelle asked Reed.

Darlene entered the living room with a cup of tea in her hand.

He tapped his finger to his jaw. "I don't know. I don't think so. You may be onto something, Maybelle. Why else would someone refer to themselves as a King?"

"King?" Darlene shouted, catching the tail-end of their conversation. "You saw the King?"

"Darlene, do you know who the king is?" Reed asked.

The older woman cackled. "Of course I do, boy. Elvis Presley is the king of rock and roll!"

Maybelle and Rowena frowned.

"Elvis Presley," Reed muttered. He stood up. "Ladies, I really need to get going. Rowena, keep your phone on you in case an emergency comes up."

"Reed, the moon is coming soon. It's not safe to be outdoors. I thought you were going to wait for Cross to lock you up for protection," Maybelle shouted to his back as he exited her home.

"That boy isn't strong enough to combat the moon himself," Darlene muttered.

Another knock at the door brought Abby to their door. "Cross has been detained by a bunch of male shifters who were affected by the moon even though it isn't fully out yet. I'm here to pick up Rowena."

Maybelle offered Abby some tea but she refused. The two younger women left after Maybelle assured them she was going to lock herself inside with Darlene. As they made their way to the alpha's home, Rowena decided it was time to pick Abby's brain.

"So, a lot of wolves came over from the Nightshade pack," Rowena said, nonchalantly.

"It seems so. Our father never told us too much about who came from which pack when we had shifters transfer in. When Cross became alpha, he made it a point to find out everything about everyone. I sometimes forget Wyatt and Maybelle came at the same time."

"They did?"

Abby nodded. "Yes. You didn't know?"

"I don't know too much about anyone in the pack," Rowena admitted.

Abby pulled into the winding driveway that led to the alpha's front entrance. "Well, Maybelle was married to Wyatt's dad. He's her stepson."

"He is? She never said anything."

Abby shrugged. "We're pack so even if we don't have lines by marriage or blood, we're still family."

"Still, it's odd that she didn't mention it."

"It could be she thought everyone already knew," Abby said. "Darkness is falling quickly, Rowena. I suggest you lock yourself in your room with Kitty. No one should enter the property but you never know during a full moon."

"What about you? Will you be safe?"

Abby grinned. "Yes, I'll be fine. I'll lock myself in a room upstairs and take some sleeping pills. The last thing I want to do is go outside and end up in a fight. It happened before and the other wolf pulled out a chunk of my hair!"

"Oh my goodness." Rowena paled. "I didn't realize it got that violent."

Abby shrugged. "That's nothing. I ended up stabbing her in the leg. She still walks with a limp."

Rowena stared at her; mouth slightly open.

"Should I have not shared that?" Abby asked.

Rowena's mouth snapped close. "No, I stabbed a woman in the leg once too. It was the third time I ended up in jail. Luckily, she dropped the charges after she found out who my family is. She was afraid Lorena would curse her."

Abby laughed. "I really like you, Rowena." They were walking to Kitty's room when Abby pulled out a stun gun.

"Are you going to stun gun me?" Rowena asked.

"No, I'm giving it to you. You may need it."

"Well, it's not the worst gift I ever received. Oddly enough, it's also not the only weapon I've ever been given. I thought I was going to be safe here."

"You should be but one thing I've learned in life is that we're never really safe, Rowena." Abby left the stun gun with her before walking away.

"That wasn't cryptic or anything," Rowena muttered, making sure to lock the door. Kitty meowed and rubbed against her legs. Rowena leaned down and picked up her cat. "We're going to be okay, aren't we, Kitty?"

As darkness fell and moonlight shone through the window, it was too late for Rowena to realize she wasn't safe at all.
