Chapter 1: Humans Are Disgusting

━━━━━━━━━━ ε😇з ━━━━━━━━━━

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The weather in the park was that of a perfect picture. People smiled as they walked past a cheerful man sitting on a bench with a book on his lap. A mockingbird chanted on a branch just above that bright being. They chanted together; the former chirped as the latter whistled.

"Ah, bollocks!" A darker being slumped next to the cheerful man, spreading his arms along the bench. "Another stupid boring day."

"Oh." The innocent young man was startled but smiled nonetheless to his friend. "Hello, Crowley. Lovely to see you here."

"Yeah, yeah. Hello, Aziraphale."

As the two celestial beings sat together, the contrast in their appearance had never been so evident.

Black sunglasses covered Crowley's eyes. A leather ebony jacket hung on his slim shoulders paired with matching tight pants. A scowl painted on his face rarely ever shifted to anything else. And that hair was an astounding flaming red.

Everything about Crowley screamed 'stay away!'

On the other hand, Aziraphale was glowing.

Doe eyes praised that innocent smile on Aziraphale's face. His stylish cream-colored garment fitted perfectly with his white-blonde hair; he always fancied comfy and breathable clothes to put on his lean figure. And that polite posture complimented his soft delightful voice as he spoke.

"Oh, no." The angel put the book down and turned towards the demon, hands clasped together like an obedient child. "Is something bothering you?"

"Meh." Crowley waved his hand nonchalantly as if he didn't have a single worry in the whole world. "Just the usual."

"Oh, come on. I know you. It's more than the usual." Aziraphale's soothing voice was hypnotizing enough to get the demon to look at him. "What seems to be the matter?"

Aziraphale's smile was everything Crowley ever really needed at that moment. It always miraculously healed him in ways he couldn't understand. That smile is real magic, Crowley thought, unlike Aziraphale's desperate magic tricks he tried so long to master.

"You know, you can tell me anything, Crowley."

'Crowley.' That name on Aziraphale's lips came out smooth as butter. Crowley loved the way the angel pronounced it. It was so sweet, so inviting.

"Well?" Aziraphale waited.

Crowley sighed. Then he took his shades off to bring a piercing gaze at those bright blue eyes of the angel. He looks peaceful and calm, Crowley thought. Should I trouble him at this time or should I leave him be, so innocent and oblivious of what's really happening up there?

Crowley couldn't bear to disturb the angel's peace of mind. Although he thought about it, he couldn't. Unfortunately for him, his snake tongue was faster to decide for him.

"It's about Heaven and Hel—" Crowley slapped his lips shut as soon as he said it.

"I thought you said they had forgotten about us."

Yellow snake eyes glanced at heavenly blues. Crowley noticed that wrinkle between Aziraphale's brows. He made his angel worry again. He felt bad; not good bad, but bad bad. He didn't mean for that to happen. However, now that the matter has been brought up, it needed to be discussed, for their own sake.

"I said they'd forget for a while... Well, it's been a while."

"But it hasn't been even a month. Oh, no." Aziraphale got up, strolling back and forth. "What are we going to do? The last time they fought, the Earth was almost destroyed. If it's happening again, we should do something. Switching faces might not work this time." The angel stopped in front of the demon and argued, "How can you sit so calmly like that? Do something, Crowley."

"Sit down, Angel," Crowley demanded with that annoyed voice of his. "I didn't even say anything yet and here you are strolling around the park fretting like an old lady."

"Oh." Aziraphale sent a quick bashful look at the demon. "I suppose you're right." He sat again. "Tell me then, what did you hear or see?"

The demon chuckled. Seeing Aziraphale stressing about a battle between the humans and the celestial beings seemed so... humane.

"What are you laughing about?"

Aziraphale turned with a slight smile forming on the corners of his lips. It was quite adorable, actually. It made the demon blush a little.

"It's funny," Crowley began. "We started as one of them, but now we're becoming more human-like with every passing second." Then he spun his body completely toward the angel as if getting ready for a serious conversation. "Do you think God is teaching us a lesson for caring so much about the humans?"

"You mean like a curse? Huh." It was the angel's turn to chuckle. "Why would you think it's a bad thing being so human? I consider it a blessing, not a curse."

"Really?" Crowley sneered. "How so?"

"Well, humans are so fascinating," Aziraphale started then suddenly paused and pulled back when he saw that expression of disgust on Crowley's face. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Because being human is so disgusting."

"Disgusting?" Aziraphale was offended.

"Yeah. They're so weak." Crowley swung his arm, pointing at the humans all around them. "And, blech, they do stuff I can't really wrap my head around."

"Like what?"

Crowley grunted as he rested his back on the bench. His face and attitude showed the contempt he felt since they started talking about human behaviors. Despite being a demon, Crowley cared about hygiene a lot. He didn't even know where to begin when it came to disgusting stuff he witnessed the humans do. There were tons of gross things to mention.

He finally picked one specific topic that has been bothering him.

"Like putting each other's body parts in one another."

"Wot?" Aziraphale clasped his brows in deep thought. "Oh! You mean sexual intercourse."

"Yeah, I really don't get it." Crowley shook his head. "I mean, I know that's how they reproduce, but they do it repeatedly for pleasure." He twisted his hand, questioning, "Why? What's the fun in that?"

"Oh, Crowley," Aziraphale smiled. "You really don't get it, do you?"

"I know. That's what I said." Crowley turned, resting his head on his shoulder. "What am I missing?"

"It's their way of showing love." Aziraphale sighed like he felt love. "Being intimate with one another. It's as if, in a way, they become one. Their worlds intertwined. For that brief meeting, they share each other. It's kind of sweet if you think about it."

Aziraphale chose his words very carefully. Like a poet performing in front of an audience. No. It was more than that. Like a human in love.

Every vowel slipped like a symphony into Crowley's ears. It made the breath hitch in his throat, then slowly released. That single slow breath was enough to shake his world. Temptation was Crowley's game, but at that moment, Aziraphale was very tempting, so very tempting that even a demon fell for him.

"But, still," Crowley finally found his voice. "There has to be a better way to show it."

"I, umm." Aziraphale took a second to think, then he raised his shoulder. "You could kiss, I suppose?"

The moment the angel asked that question, he caught a twinkle in the demon's yellow eyes.

"Yeah." Crowley bit his bottom lip. "I'd like that very much."

Crowley moved closer to the angel's face, lips pursed and eyes closed, only to be greeted with a shove.

"Crowley!" Aziraphale yelled. "What in Heaven's sake do you think you're doing?"

Crowley opened his eyes to find himself inches away from Aziraphale's lips. Aziraphale's hand was on his chest, pushing him away. He looked so confused and frightened by Crowley's sudden move.

"You said I could kiss."

"I didn't mean me! Why on Earth would you want to kiss me?"

"Because... " The demon backed away like a wounded puppy. "I like you—"

"—What?—"

"—and you like me."

"No, I don't!"

"You dooo."

"I don't!" The angel arranged his clothes then suddenly blushed. "Wait. You like me?"

"Oh, for Satan's sake! Where have you been?" Crowley snarled. "I've been telling you that for years." He waved his hand angrily. "And all you did was push me aside and act as nothing happened!"

"Well..." Aziraphale glanced at Crowley then lowered his head in shame. "I... I suppose you're right." He half chuckled, trying to hide a disturbing feeling bubbling inside him. "I—I honestly have no words. I mean, I'm flattered, but—"

"Oh, come on," Crowley whined. "Are you going to keep telling me that you 'don't even like' me? Or that your side won't be happy about this? I told you we're on our own side from now on."

The angel kept quiet.

"Aziraphale, look at me." Crowley gently lifted the angel's chin until their eyes met. "You have nothing to worry about."

"I'm sorry, Crowley, I can't." Aziraphale sat up. "I just—"

"Aziraphale, wait!" Crowley stood as he watched his angel walk away. "Where are you going?"

"I can't deal with this right now." Aziraphale threw his arms in the air in protest.

"Fock me. Now, what did I say?" Crowley followed him. "Aziraphale!"

Aziraphale stopped and turned. The sad look on his angelic face almost made Crowley cry.

"Just tell me," Crowley begged. "What did I do wrong?"

Aziraphale smiled. His eyes glistened with tears. Then his smile gradually turned into a sad little frown.

"You go too fast for me, Crowley."

With that, the angel left the demon alone in the park on a once beautiful Saturday afternoon.
