I was awoken a clap of thunder that made me jump, sending me tumbling off the bed onto the floor with a thud.
"Ugh," I groaned to myself,"I think I'll just stay here."
"Lazy day, huh?"
I looked up to see Brian standing in the doorway.
"I didn't see you there. Yeah. I'm pretty beat."
"I don't understand how you could be. You slept a lot yesterday. When we got off the plane you slept, when we got into the house you slept, and you slept last night!"
"Not exactly..."
"You didn't sleep well last night?"
"Not really. But don't worry. I think I'm just a little homesick."
"That's understandable. How about some breakfast?"
"Sounds great."
We walked into the kitchen where the rest of the band was sitting and enjoying pancakes and bacon.
"Good morning," they all said in unison and then laughed.
I smiled and sat down, Brian on my left and Roger on my right.
"So, did you sleep the rest of the night through?" Roger asked nudging me.
"Actually, yes. Thanks for asking. That was really nice of you to help me out last night." I answered.
"Anything you need, just ask. Brian's there for you, as well as me and the rest of the band. You are kind of a part of us now."
I couldn't help but smile. I was actually a part of Queen. I still didn't feel like I was that important of a friend to them. But if they liked me, why question then?
"So, boys, are we going to start writing some new music soon?" Freddie asked.
"Let me finish my pancakes first. Jeez, Fred!" John answered sarcastically.
"Hey, I think Brian's got a song," I interrupted. Everyone looked over at Brian and he turned red.
Brian leaned in and whispered in my ear,"please don't tell them about that. That song was crap. We both know that."
"Sorry," I whispered back and then told everyone else,"never mind. I think I just dreamt that."
They all stared at me, confused by my lie to cover for Brian. I shouldn't have said that, though. His music was beautiful. He was too talented to let it go to waste.
"I think Elle and I are going to hang out today," Brian said, quickly changing the subject.
"That's fine. Today's a lazy day for us, I guess," Freddie answered.
I helped with cleaning up breakfast. When we were all finished, I went up to Brian.
"So, what've you got planned today?" I asked.
"It's a surprise. You'll see eventually," He replied with a sly smirk.
Then he just walked away and disappeared. I took it that he was trying to be mysterious. It was okay, considering he wasn't the mysterious, secret-keeping type. But I had to give him credit for trying.
Hours passed and I had no idea where Brian was. I was searching the house but he was nowhere to be found.
"Hey, John," I called out," where's Brian?"
He just shrugged and them started to run away in the opposite direction. Weird.
I went into my room and found a note sitting on my bed. It was kind of hard to read. Of course. Brian's handwriting. Almost unintelligible but this was what I got out of it.
My love,
I've got a riddle for you
Down where the fork
Separates the road in two
One way will lead you away
The other to the city
But only one you decide
will lead you to me
Well, I've always hated riddles. But at least this one was pretty much straight to the point.
I threw on some skinny jeans and a big hoodie because it was still raining a bit. I put on some boots and then walked into the hallway, which was surprisingly quiet.
"Hello?" I called out.
No reply.
I just let it go and walked outside. It was raining a lot harder than I thought it was. I was about to run back inside to grab a raincoat and an umbrella but a red sports car pulled up and honked at me.
"Hey! Get in!" Roger called out.
I hopped in his car and immediately started asking questions.
"What in the world is going on? And why did it have to be on such a rainy day? And why-"
"Just shut up and enjoy it!" He laughed.
"Fine. Oh, and, nice car, by the way."
"What can I say. Yeah, I'm in love with my car."
I admired his reference to his own song. I chuckled a little at his joke,
"So where are we going, exactly?" I started to question again.
"What did the note say?"
"Oh, drat. I left it in my room. It said something about the fork in the road."
"Oh, right. Which way do we go?"
"Um, not the city, I think."
We pulled up to where the road separated and Roger took the right side.
"Are you sure this is the right way?" I asked.
"Hey, I've lived here longer than you have. Don't question me."
I rolled my eyes and let him drive on. But soon I noticed that we were getting into more suburban and city-like areas.
"Um, Roger-"
"What did I just say?" He turned around and whispered.
"Don't question you..."
"Exactly."
But I was starting to get worried. Of course, we were going the wrong way. At least, I think we were.
He kept driving and driving, and soon we were in the countryside. I had know idea where we were going so I hoped Roger knew what he was doing. Brian never gave me an exact location, though.
All of a sudden, we started to slow down. Roger pulled over on the shoulder.
"Damn," he mumbled to himself,"I thought I filled the tank."
"Roger, is everything okay?"
There was only the tapping of rain beating down upon the car. Then Roger started humming to himself. I couldn't make out what the melody of the song was.
"Hey, let's walk from here. Don't want to keep Brian waiting, huh?" Roger suggested.
My eyes widened.
"Roger, God only knows how long we have to walk to get there. Plus, it's pouring rain outside!"
"C'mon."
He opened my door and helped me out. We started walking alongside a field. Suddenly, Roger stopped me.
"Hey, wanna go on an adventure?" He said, pointing to a pathway that led to a dense patch of trees.
I looked at him again. I did not want to walk through mud and tall grass and into a dark forest just for an "adventure".
"Don't be such a killjoy. Learn to be adventurous sometimes! It can be fun." He said, taking me by the hand and leading me down the path.
We got to the trees across the field, but I stopped right before.
"I don't want to go in there. Please, can we just call a cab or something? Or maybe walk to a gas station?" I asked.
"Nah, just come on. It'll be worth it."
We entered the deep dense forest of trees. The rain was starting to subside and the sun was beginning to shine through in patches of light.
"Wait a second."
Roger stopped in his tracks and surveyed the area.
"Where did we come in again?"
"Roger," I started, sounding worried,"please tell me that you're joking."
"I don't think I am."
"Roger please-"
"Just keep walking, I guess."
We kept on, trudging through the mud and over rocks. We finally reached a clearing and I looked around. There was a river and a weeping willow tree, bent over with the branches swaying in the breeze.
"Roger, is this it?"
I looked around and he was gone. How did he do that? I didn't even hear him leave.
I started to panic and then there was a rap on my shoulder. I jumped and screamed out.
"Woah, Elle. It's just me."
I turned around and saw Brian.
"Bri, what are you doing? You scared me half to death! You know I hate that. I get scared so easily..."
"Sorry. I just wanted to surprise you."
"So, was Roger in on this?"
"Yeah, he helped. Thank goodness."
"Wow. So, you did this for me?"
"Of course. Only the best for you."
"The best?" I said, pointing to my tattered, dirt stained, clothes that were completely drenched.
He didn't answer but took me by the hand and led me over to a large oak tree.
"Do you climb trees?" Brian asked, grabbing a branch and pulling himself up.
"I love climbing."
I grabbed hold of the first branch and hoisted myself up. By then, Brian was halfway to the top.
Eventually we made it to just about the top. We peered over and surveyed the large field with rolling hills and valleys.
"Wow, this is beautiful," I said.
"Just wait until tonight," Brian said, smiling at me. I couldn't wait for what he had planned.
----
A little while later, when the sun was starting to set, we went over to the weeping willow tree. Brian pulled out a warm blanket and set it underneath. He grabbed a lantern and lit it up.
"Are you hungry?" He asked, taking something out from his backpack.
"I'm starving, actually."
"I hope you like peanut butter and honey sandwiches with apples. Those are my favorite."
"Sounds delicious."
We both settled down onto the blanket and ate our dinner, watching the red sun, illuminating hues of red, pink and yellow, slowly fade, letting the night take over.
The only light source we had by then was the lantern, illuminating a fair amount of light, and also the brightness from the stars and the moon.
"How about dessert?" Brian asked again, reaching into his pack.
"Sure, I guess."
He pulled out some cookies and brownies.
"Feel free to dig in. I brought plenty."
I just laughed. But I really didn't want dessert. I cuddled up next to Brian. I guess he didn't want to have dessert, either.
He put his arms around me and pulled me close, resting his chin on my head.
"Are you cold?" He asked, starting to pull off his coat.
"No, I'm fine."
"Are you sure? You look cold."
Before I could say no again, he put his coat on me and hugged me again.
"Aren't you cold now?" I asked, feeling kind of bad.
"No, I'm just fine. I'm not the one who's still soaked with rainwater."
I started to close my eyes. I dozed off for about them minutes until Brian woke me up with a shake.
"Shooting stars, Elle! Look!" He said, pointing up at the sky.
As I gazed up I saw stars flying about through the darkness of the sky. I turned to Brian who was already looking at me.
We stared at each other, not saying a word. Our eyes were locked on each other. He started curling my hair with his fingers. Then ran his hand along my jawline and cupped my face with it.
His other hand was on my waist. He pulled me close and our noses touched. He whispered gently,"I'm in love with you, Eleanor."
Our faces were so close and his breath was hot on my face. His stray frizzy hairs tickled my cheeks.
He placed his lips softly against mine. His fingers were tangled in my hair as he pulled me closer.
I moved my arms up and around his neck. We both pulled away and breathed a full breath in unison.
"You're perfect,"Brian whispered as we laid back to gaze at the stars once more. Neither of us said another word as we drifted off into a deep sleep, held in each other's embrace.
