Chapter 4
Detective May rang Zelda and Harley early Friday morning. Today was Debbie's visitation before the funeral tomorrow. But, Debbie's autopsy had come in.
"Hello?" Zelda answered the phone.
It was about 8:45 in the morning.
"Mrs. Matthew it's Detective May, how are you?" May asked her.
"I'm doing as well can be expected. What is this call in reference to?" Zelda asked.
Harley walks into the kitchen where Zelda was standing.
"It's Detective May," Zelda whispered.
"So the autopsy results are in for Debbie. Would you like me to tell you over the phone or come down to the station?" May inquired.
Zelda turned white.
"What's the matter?" Harley asked.
"The autopsy results are in," Zelda said as she began to shake.
"What is the kicker?" Harley asked.
"May wants to know if we want to hear them over the phone or in person," Zelda said.
"Tell us now," Harley said into the phone.
"Ok so we have determined that Debbie died of an accidental drowing due to ether intoxication. So this is becoming a homicide investigation," May said.
"I knew she didn't kill herself," Zelda said a bit relieved.
"But now we have to come up with a list of suspects Mr. and Mrs. Matthew," May said.
Zelda and Harley were relieved to a point, but now, who would have enough anger towards Debbie to kill her?
"We would like you guys to come down to the station today to give some more statements and testimonies," May said.
"Ok what time?" Zelda asked.
"1pm work for you?" May asked.
"That's fine. Thank you Detective May," Zelda responded.
"Thank you. See you guys later," May said hanging up the phone.
"So Debbie died of ether intoxication?" Harley asked puzzled.
"Ether? I don't understand who would of killed her," Zelda said stunned.
It was overwhelmingly calming to know that Debbie wouldn't have killed herself. The bath tub and whisky was a cover-up for the killer.
"Debbie had no enemies. Harley, do you think it was random?" Zelda asked confused sitting down on the kitchen barstool.
"I'm not sure Zelda. Either way, we need to figure out how this could have ended up happening," Harley said consoling Zelda.
"Do you think David knows yet?" Zelda asked.
"I don't know honey," Harley said.
Both Harley and Zelda were still a bit shocked at Detective May's phone call.
The boys came out of their room to come get breakfast.
"Morning grandma!" Daymon said jumping on the kitchen barstool next to Zelda.
"Good morning Daymon," Zelda replied to her oldest grandson.
"You know what grandma? You and grandpa got rid of the monsters better then daddy did! It was like mommy was here all night," Daymon said yawning.
Daniel and Dustin were babbling with each other.
"Which cereal do you boys want?" Harley asked getting into the cabinet.
"Marshymallows," Daniel said with sleep still in his eyes.
"Mmmmmmm," Dustin and Daymon responded.
Harley got the milk out of the fridge and got the boys breakfast ready. Sean and his wife Lisa would be here at 10 to get the boys for a few hours till Zelda and Harley were going down to the station yet again.
Zelda got the boys ready for the day despite this evening being busier seeing family and friends who also loved Debbie.
Sean and Lisa soon got there to take care of the boys. But before they left, Zelda and Harley let Sean know the autopsy came in.
"May called us this morning," Harley said as he shut the door letting in Sean and Lisa.
"Any leads or causes?" Sean asked his dad.
"Well Debbie didn't commit suicide. The autopsy showed accidental drowning due to ether poisoning," Harley said with a crack in his voice.
"Ether poisoning?" Sean and Lisa whispered.
"APD is now investigating it as a homicide," Zelda said with a hard swallow.
The boys came in and they all got quiet.
"We can't talk about this at the visitation or outside this house," Harley whispred to Sean.
"Let's get through the funeral and get the boys settled as much as they can," Lisa suggested.
"That's a good idea," Zelda said with stress in her voice.
The Matthew/Kingston family went on with their day, honoring Debbie and not ready to say goodbye tomorrow.
