Chapter 20
Fast forwarding to 1999, Harley passed away peacefully after a 10 year battle with health conditions including his unsuccessful heart bypass surgeries. He truly could never recover after the death of Debbie. He was buried next to Debbie where they finally met after 9 years of seperation. The boys were only 16 and 13, respectfully. They had a hard time knowing that one of the strongest men they knew was gone.
Zelda faced a lot more heartbreak in the coming years. The boys were grown up but come 2011, Donny died of a heart attack in her arms. You look at Zelda and wonder, how has this woman survived the heartache and disappointment every few short years?
Zelda stayed teaching till 2013 when she was unfortunately diagnosed with dementia. Her heart and mind were still strong till she passed away in a nursing home in November 2018, just 18 days after her 90th birthday. Her memory will also forever live on with everyone's lives she touched in those 90 years she was here on this planet. Zelda was finally reunited with her husband and Debbie and Donny.
The reason this book came into frution was the Matthews family always fascinated me as I was not exactly even a thought yet in 1990. As I continued doing family research, it came apparent that I had an attachment to Debbie. My mom was the one pushed me to write the book. There is potential here to save someone's life. Perhaps its because Debbie and Zelda inspired me to become a teacher myself. My Aunt Zelda always gave me the best books while I was a child like Dr. Suess, nursery rhymes, etc.
Debbie's story has to be heard. This story could save someone else's life. History repeats itself and I hope if people see Debbie's story, they can get themselves out of those toxic situations. I write to inspire.
David Kingston has to be still found guilty even if he is up for parole. It doesn't matter if 31 years has passed since the murder. He is still a convicted murder and any judge will see he is a sick man.
2022, David will be eligible for parole as mentioned above. He contiunes to maintain his innoence, 31 years later. In court records, he has filed several appeals and they constantly deny it. The court system still knows he did it and they cannot let him free.
David even tried using the pandemic as an excuse to get out of jail. If you ever see David's smug face, you will know he is gulity. I don't understand why Debbie stayed married to him except that fact that sometimes love is blind and of course her boys.
We visit Debbie's grave every 2 weeks. She was not just a cousin, she was someone's daughter, mother, teacher and friend. I feel robbed of not getting to know Debbie. Most of what I know about Debbie is now because of my research of the murder investigation. Her sweet soul will stick with me the rest of my life.
Debbie's story stays with me. How could someone have so much jealous and hate to kill the mother of their children? Why did Zelda have to go through so much heartbreak? Why did David think he could get away with murder when he left such a messy trail?
I do not have much contact with Debbie's boys. It's only at Christmas time we see them due to everyone's lives being so different.
A lot of my questions remain unanswered. I often sit and reflect upon my own life and I strive to be like my aunt Zelda. She was strong, brave and uttermost an inspiration to hide the pain and sorrow she faced in a short period of time.
We can only pray that David Kingston stays in prison for life for the actions he did, even if it was 30 years ago.
To live forever in our hearts, Debbie Kingston will live on. Next time you see a pink rose, say hello to Debbie.
