Chapter 19
January 31st, 1992 came around fairly quickly. David Kingston, still portraying his innocence, was sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 9 1/2 years for the murder of Debbie Kingston.
"I am innocent of this crime. I will continue my innocence," Kingston told District Judge Francis Arthur just before Arthur imposed the sentence on David.
"I am innocent," David told news reporters as he was escorted out Judge Arthur's jury room after David talked to his attorney Whitewash.
The convictions and sentencing, however, is automatic appeal to the Supreme Court.
A life sentence, meaning 30 years of imprisonment before being eligible for parole, is mandatory for first degree murder.
One of the Chief District Attorney's told one source that "We are pleased with how everything turned out. Debbie and her family can find some peace and comfort knowing that David Kingston can no longer harm anyone."
Detective May, being the Chief Investagior from day 1 was ecstatic. He knew David was guilty from the beginning, but until Richard made his confession, it was difficult to come to the conclusion was right.
Detective May told someone that he was "extremely happy" how everything turned out. He wanted to do cartwheels once the verdict was read last month. Detective May was the biggest support in this case and the Matthews family had uttermost gratefulness for him. He stood by the Matthews and did not back down from his stance. Detective May will always have Debbie close in his heart. May found the liar, and David Kingston had to live with regret the rest of his life.
"As Mr. Kingston stated in court, he will contiune to maintain his innocence. I firmly believe he always will portray that innocence and will file an appeal to get a new trial and show he did not murder his wife. The evidence presented was invalid," Whitewash, David's attorney, spoke.
Whitewash would continue to try and get the court to appeal David's conviction. This was one case Whitewash had lost in his whole career. Guess David should look at Whitewash too for his conviction.
As for the Matthews, everyone was able to take a sigh of relief. Later in the year, Sean was in court to recieve Debbie's life insurance money, including the $25,000.00 David had spent. Sean put most of the money away for the boys and kept out a small portion to help raise the boys. The papers were made official that Sean had mandatory guardianship over Daymon, Daniel, and Dustin. Harley and Zelda were still heavily involved with the boys. The only thing getting Zelda through this was seeing her grandchildren.
For a while, Daymon contiuned asking his grandma hard questions. Zelda still used the church wisdom to show that Debbie's earthly body was gone, but she was angel protecting them now until forever.
Harley's health was slowly starting to decline. The only thing keeping him going was the gulity verdict. He missed Debbie terribly, and his heart condition worsened from this point in time.
As for Zelda, she continued teaching and attending church. Zelda did not let her guard down and made sure that when the appeals came up every ten years, she went and faced David Kingston and made sure he was not let out.
Damon, Dustin and Daniel contiuned to miss their mom. Every day, it did not get easier. It will be a tramua that will most likely stay with the boys the rest of their lives.
For Donny, he still carries gulit knowing that the night of March 27 when he was with David, it was possible he was hanging out already with a murderer. Everyone held a grudge against Donny still.
We look to Debbie, to live and learn. Her life is never over. She lives on in her children, the students she taught, the pink roses, and anything that involved making a difference in a child's life. Her life may have ended at the hands of her husband, but Debbie Kingston's life will forever be a reason to never overlook what is going on on the outside of a person.
