Chapter 2 | The Taking

Y/N left her home with blood stained hands, tear filled eyes, and a sense of freedom. She clutched onto her backpack tightly as she walked along the sidewalk. It was close to midnight now. She had only made it a few blocks away from her house, but was willing to turn back.

"Who would think that a child murdered someone? Mary's death would most likely be blamed on Elaine than on me." She thought.

Y/N abruptly stopped, then turned and looked back. By leaving, she knew that she was putting her sister in jeopardy of going to jail for murder. But by staying.....what would happen to her?

Her tears continued to drip onto the sidewalk one by one as she stood there. She bit her lip roughly almost causing it to bleed. Her heart raced and she felt as though it was going to explode.

"Elaine." She whispered in a desperate voice. "What do I–"

She stopped mid-sentence when she heard the sound of multiple sirens quickly approaching the street. Elaine had called faster than she had anticipated.

She hurriedly ran onto someone's yard and hid in a large bush. It was dark so there were many places to hide, but it was only a matter of time before they came searching for her.

Y/N had only a little time left to flee the neighborhood for a while and find someplace to wash off. The blood will stain her clothes, so it'll be hard to completely get away with murder.

Three police cars and an ambulance sped through the street and more came behind them. Y/N was frozen in place and could only follow them with her eyes.

After a while a sitting still, Y/N overheard the people that were awoken by the sirens and bright lights begin to move. She had to act quick before they noticed her down there and called the police.

She sprinted across the yard and onto the sidewalk. She soon reached a close by gas station that was still open, but didn't have any customers. She took a deep breath, then ran into the store careful not to let anyone see her.

"I have to use the restroom!" She said as she sped past. "Thank you, sir!"

The cashier was too lazy to even look up, so fate was on Y/N's side that night. She pulled off her clothes as soon as she touched the tiled floor. She hovered over the sink in only her undergarments and splashed water over her face and body. She scrubbed so hard that she almost yelped in pain, but ignored the pain and kept going.

In less than 5 minutes, Y/N had on a fresh new clothes and no longer looked like a murderer. She stuffed the bloody clothes into her bag, then walked out with a slight smile on her face.

"I feel like a new girl!"

She wore a plain white long-sleeved shirt and a pair of royal blue pants. She had tucked her pants into her winter boots and wore her signature winter hat over her head.

Y/N headed for exit, but stopped when she noticed a woman at the register. She was shocked to see the woman because she was sure no one was in the store when she went in. Unless she completely missed her.

The woman looked young and was probably in her 20s. She didn't have on many layers of clothing despite the cold weather, not even a coat. Her dark green, glossy hair was braided into a ponytail and her eyes looked empty. Y/N kept an eye on the woman as she walked past, but then she spoke.

"Hmm? A child?" She spoke in a soft voice. "Why are you out so late at night?"

"I...I'm out for a walk." Y/N replied. "That's all, ma'am. Thank you for concerning yourself with me."

Y/N smiled kindly, then rushed to the door, but the woman stopped her again by placing her hand on her shoulder.

The woman smiled kindly at Y/N and her forest green eyes glistened. "My name is Nijo and I'm not from around here, but I would like to help you. Are you lost? It's very dangerous for you to be walking alone at this time of night."

Y/N clenched her jaws and took a few steps back to put distance between the two. She was only a few steps away from the door, but she didn't want the woman to think that she had something to hide or that she was running away.

"No thank you ma'am."

Y/N resumed walking and was no longer stopped by the woman. She actually made it out the door this time, but had a feeling of dread as she left the store.

"Grandma and Elaine would have scolded me for talking to that woman that long and not running away. I'm not supposed to talk to strangers no matter what."

Although Y/N was only 8, her grandmother and big sister taught her a lot about the world. A lot of harsh realities and truths about the world she lives in that a child as young as her wouldn't have any clue about.

The street lights flickered above her as she walked along the sidewalk. It was so quiet that the insects could be heard beneath the snow. It was horrifyingly quiet.

Y/N walked in a fast pace with her hands in her pockets with a feeling of being watched. She had turned a few corners and soon found herself in the heart of the city. There were only a few people around, and that was the sole reason for her being so tense.

"Am I being followed?" She thought.

She quickened her pace, but didn't leave behind her followers. She looked back frequently, and didn't see anyone, until she looked back that one last time before breaking out into a sprint when she saw a black van slowly approaching her from down the street.

She ran and ran until she could no longer see the van in sight. When she stopped to catch her breath, she noticed that she was in an alley. The worst place to be at this time of night. To be safe, she chose to dive into a dumpster until morning.

Luckily, the dumpster was almost completely empty, but that didn't stop a family of rats from seeking shelter in there. She covered her mouth and squealed into her hand, but was careful not to let anyone know she was in there.

"Did you see where she went?" A male voice asked.

"Down this alley. Don't lose her again once you find her." A familiar feminine voice said.

Y/N shook and wanted to cry, but doing so would reveal her location. She finally realized what she wanted now. She wanted to go home and take the blame for Mary's murder instead of living the life of a runaway criminal for a while.

She buried her head into her knees and shooed away the rats gnawing on her coat. She silently sobbed and longed for the comfort of her big sister. Elaine was the only one who knew what she was going through, but she left her all alone.

There was a sudden loud noise to the left of Y/N which sounded like someone had kicked the dumpster. The rats scurried onto Y/N and she tried her best to throw them off of her not even realizing that her followers were right outside.

It was over for her.

"~Found you~" They sung.

I know I said in the last chapter that Karma will appear in this chapter, but that turned out to be untrue because It took longer than expected for Y/N to get kidnapped, but next chapter definitely! Promise!
