Chapter Ten

The dress is too tight, the heels too high and my makeup is too heavy, but I looked the part and that's all that matters.

"You look ridiculous."

I ignore him and keep admiring this strange girl in the mirror. I wear makeup and sometimes dress up but this was a bit much.

"You'll trip and die in those heels."

His whining only encourages me, I'm still mad at him so making him a little annoyed made me feel much happier, even if my feet were already in pain.

We had gone the whole day staying away from each other, I caught up on college work, and Casper, well I don't really care what he did.

"I don't understand why you're going to this stupid party, June invited you right? So why go?"

'To make a point', I answered, but just not out loud.

"I don't think you should go."

I laugh a little and pick up my clutch bag.

"Why's that funny?"

I sigh, "because going to this stupid party is better than being around you right now."

He didn't say anything else.

At 9:00pm, my mum dropped me off at the party June had been so excited for weeks ago when we were still friends.

And although I was alone, I'd soon let alcohol make me some friends.

I knew any moment now Casper would show up, seeing as he goes where I do, unfortunately. But I waited, yet he never showed up.

Shrugging, I enter the house of the hostesses, making sure I watched my footwork on the steps.

The room was filled with moving bodies, but I couldn't identify any of them because of the flashing lights casting different colours onto their faces for only a split second.

I pushed my way through, hoping that eventually I'd reach a room not as crowded so I could breathe. I fell out from the crowd into the kitchen, this was a busy room too, but at least people seemed to notice me, which isn't too great, seeing as I just fell from the dancing crowd.

I smiled up at the curious glances, and they all turned away back to their conversations I had obviously so rudely interrupted.

I quickly grabbed the top plastic cup sat in a stack of them, and then grabbed the vodka which was almost empty. I filled up the rest of the cup with coke and went on my way.

The vodka was strong, there was probably three shots in my drink, but I didn't care. I was still angry with Casper.

Luckily I couldn't see June anywhere, but I could see some of the popular guys looking my way. I gave them a polite smile and turned away to find another room, preferably with more vodka as the cup was now almost empty.

"Hey," a smooth confident voice drifted toward me. Shit, I didn't want an encounter with those guys.

But it wasn't, it was just a drunk guy, who usually wouldn't be as bold to walk up to a girl and say hi, I guess alcohol does that to you.

"Get out of here Trevor, you're bothering this girl, go find someone else to harass."

Behind me is one of the guys looking at me before, great. But in this case, Trevor was not my type, and a bit of creep anyway so I'll take the help.

Trevor grumbled something as he went bright red, then he stumbled away into the crowd and disappeared.

"That better?" I turn to look at the other guy, to find he's even hotter up close.

"Yes thanks," I smile and turn to walk away, but he touches my shoulder to gently stop me.

"Woah, am I that scary?" He asks with a cute smirk on his lips, but the smirk doesn't work as well as it does on Casper.

"Oh, sorry, I didn't think you'd actually want to talk to me." Once if came out I realised how stupid it sounded.

"Why's that?" He asks, tilting his head to the side a little, his short spiky hair doesn't flop to the side like Casper's would.

Stop thinking about Casper. I repeat this line to myself a few times before answering.

"Because you don't know me, so why would you bother?" I didn't mean for if to come out so mean, but it did.

I laughs a little, it was more a rush of air escaping from his lips, as if he'd been holding his breath.

"Okay then, hi, I'm Jake," he holds his hand out to me.

"Leah," I shake his hand and smile up at him.

"Its nice to meet you Leah. Do you want a refill on that?"

Although he was cute, I knew better than to let a random guy fill up my drink for me.

"Sure, walk with me to the kitchen?" I brush past him but stop to make sure he's following.

We get to the kitchen to find its now even fuller than before.

"What do you want?"

"Something strong, but I'm pretty sure the vodkas gone."

He nods and walks into the crowd, they seem to just move for him, where as when I try to follow, its like a wall of shoulders.

He returns with a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand, and a bottle of Coke in the other.

He holds then up to me like trophies, "ta-da, strong stuff."

I laugh a little and thank him, the bottle of Jack Daniels hadn't been opened yet and the bottle of Coke was pretty full as well, so I let him poor the drink for me.

"Woah, woah," I say un tipping the Jack Daniels from the drink.

"Too much of the strong stuff?" He laughs.

"A little," I grin at him.

"My bad," he says unscewing the Coke and pouring the black liquid into the drink.

Someone knocks me from behind, making me half fall into Jake, I quickly stand up and turn to glare at the boy behind me, who was giggling with a stench of alcohol on his breath.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, just stupid drunk guys."

He nods and grabs another cup and starts to fill it up with Jack Daniels, with maybe a shot of Coke as well.

"Bit strong?"

He shrugs, "I prefer mine to have a little burn, plus whiskey is my favourite."

There's a silence for a few seconds, us just stood there in the kitchen, sipping our drinks. He glances at me but quickly looks away. I give him a confused look back, so he says, "Please don't take this as me being creepy, but you look amazing tonight."

I feel the blush creeping onto my face, Casper had said I looked ridiculous.

But the compliment didn't make my stomach do summersaults like it would do if Casper had said it.

"Thank you," I take a swig of my drink so I don't have to say anything else.

"I'm guessing you don't get complimented much."

I awkwardly smile and shake my head.

"I don't see why not, you're beautiful."

His compliments may be nice, but they were starting to make me feel queezy. They make me uncomfortable as I never know what to say. I just smile back.

"So, Leah, why did you come to this party?" He asks, trying to get a conversation going.

"What do you mean?"

"Well I'd been watching you and saw you seemed to look lost, or out of place here."

Watching me? Well that's not creepy at all.

"Oh?" I simply say.

"That's why I came over, well I wanted to earlier but seeing that guy bothering you gave me the courage to come talk to you.

"I guess I am a little out of place, my friend and me fell out, badly, and this party was her idea. I wasn't going to go but-"

"But you wanted to prove a point, wanted to show that you could still have fun without her."

I smiled and nodded, "exactly."

"So that means you're alone, right?"

A pang stabs my stomach as he says that, and a bad feeling climbs over me.

The only thing I can think of is how I wish Casper was here with me.

"I mean, you came in alone, and if you and your friend aren't here together, you're alone?"

"So?"

"Well, I guess that means no ones going to notice if you're not here anymore." A cruel smirk lights up his face, his eyes turn dark and lustful. Suddenly my tight dress feels all too revealing.

He glances down to my drink, his smirk turning into an awful, spiteful smile.

Realisation hits and I look down to my drink, but I was so careful. How did he spike it?

"Its just a sleeping tablet, a small one, just to make you, a little more manageable."

I felt sick, officially disgusted. My face must have turned pale because Jake's smile widened.

"You won't get away with it, I'll tell people." I try to look strong, try to seem self assured, but in reality I felt faint.

"Oh we can, we know how to get away with this stuff."

This stuff? They make me sick, and they've obviously done this before. Those poor girls.

Someone stands right behind me, their chest on my back. They're trying to push me towards Jake, to trap me between them.

I turn my head to the side to see the same guy that knocked me over when Jake was pouring my drink.

So that's how he did it, distract me while putting it into my drink.

I see my chance, they still hadn't trapped me and I think they thought the pill would have been working by now, as they seemed ready to catch me at any second.

I take my chance and bolt out the kitchen. Jake tries to grab me, but he grabs my cardigan which I can easily slip out of.

I run towards the direction where I think the front door is.

I was right, as I see the door wide open at the other side of the room, so I push past eveyone to get towards it.

My eyes start to feel heavy and my feet keep tripping over each other, but I just know I need to get outside.

But I come up to what seems to be a wall of people, all in the way of the door and no matter how I push, they won't move.

I feel my heart racing, probably accelerating the effects of the sleeping tablet, but I don't care.

I look behind me to see Jake make eye contact with me from across the room. Unlike my fight through the crowd, he was Moses and the crowd was the red sea.

This only panicked me more. I started banging on peoples backs, but even if they moved the people in front soon filled it, blocking my exit again.

I couldn't go anywhere, I was trapped.

"There's a gap near the stairs, run to the stairs."

His soft voice was right next to my ear, I breathed a sigh of relief hearing his voice.

I gather my fading strength and run to the stairs, seeing the small gap and slamming my body through it, finally escaping the wall of bodies.

I see the door, wide open, so I stagger to it. If I get out I'll be okay.

My arms feel numb, and the room feels like its spinning around me. There's a high pitched ringing in my ears, I think its Casper's voice, but I can't hear what he's saying.

I stagger down the steps, but fall once I reach the last one, my heels fall off my feet as I go flying into the grass.

Although I was in pain, I felt so sleepy that the grass and my position felt so comfy that I could sleep right there.

"Leah, Leah please get up." His voice sounded so urgent, so scared.

"Casper?" I mumble through my numb lips.

"Hey beautiful, I need you to do something for me, okay?"

I try to nod but my neck seizes in pain.

"I need you to get up, there's a bush you can hide in just a few feet in front of you, please, Leah, you have to get up."

I push my arms up and start to crawl in the direction Casper told me go.

"You're doing great cupcake, keep going."

Eventually the green grass turned into soil. I slump down on the cold ground, I can feel the spikes off the bush digging into my skin, but I'm too exhausted to move again.

I manage to keeo my eyes open long enough to see Jake run out the house, he must have had some trouble getting through that wall too. He looks angree and desperate.

I turn my eyes to the side, to see Casper sat next to me, his hand tracing my cheek. His eyes were screwed up in fear, but also relief.

I try to thank him, but my eyes start to slope down, like heavy weights until I can't lift them up anymore.
