Chapter 9
"I scream, you scream, gimme that gimme that ice scream ~" Jungkook sang winking at Sae as soon as they were situated on a bench on a sidewalk.
"Your voice is amazing." Sae nodded dismissively at Jungkook, fidgeting as she was still new to the art of compliments. She was not a person who talked much and she was not a person who appreciated people easily either.
Jungkook nodded, happily licking his ice cream even though it was dark and chilly outside.
Sae shivered as she looked at the ice cream cone in her pale hands.
She questioned the idea of eating an ice cream on a chilly night, wondering how in the world it would go with the whether. Weren't they made for the summer?
"You never know anything unless you do it Noona." Jungkook chastised her for her still uneaten ice cream.
"Wont this affect your throat?" Sae asked worriedly, trying to avoid consuming the frozen sweetness but Jungkook was having none of it.
"It might, it might not." Jungkook said thoughtfully. "But who care about a sore throat when I have the rest of my life to sing but only this chilly night with you to enjoy this?" Jungkook squeezed his eyes and made an appreciative noise at the back of his throat for his own words and Sae couldn't help but laugh.
"Noona," Jungkook began again after her laughter subsided. "Happiness can be found anywhere, be it ramen after feeling hungry or going to the billboard. Sometimes you just need to see the small things before you inorder to be happy instead of considering the what ifs." Jungkook pointed out and Sae blinked taken aback by the younger's words.
"Even happiness has its cost and consequences." Sae suddenly realized.
"Its like poisoned wine." Jungkook reasoned. "Sweet and addictive. And enjoyed until we die."
Sae laughed again at the metaphor and decided to take a bite.
It was exactly what she expected at first, sweet and cold. So cold.
But somehow, as the ice cream melted in her mouth, it brought her a sweet warmth that made her toes curl. Or maybe it wasn't the ice cream that made her shiver, but the sudden blanketing warmth of Jacket as he peeled it off and settled them over her shoulders.
"W-what are you doing?" Sae aske nervously trying to hand it back to him but Jungkook stopped her with a hand.
"A girl should never be bared to the cold." Jungkook whispered and even though the sentence was simple enough she sensed another meaning to the sentence, in the rough timbre of his voice.
"I can take care of myself." She frowned turning away but Jungkook chuckled albeit humorlessly.
"I know you can Noona, that's why I gave you just the jacket."
Sae narrowed her eyes at the words which sounded like a promise, a promise that had been cut short,, its end invisible and hanging . Sae couldn't make sense of it. And it seemed like the younger didn't want her to make sense of it either.
This boy with half said promises, inquisitive eyes and clear thoughts wasn't somebody who would easily warm upto people, she could tell. But the way he had cozied upto her baffled her.
And maybe she was supposed to realize something that night.
That Jungkook was an ice cream on a chilly night. He was her blanket and ramen on a rainy day and her colors after years of yearning. He was her solace.
Only, she realized it much, much later on.
