Chapter 2
The two Jedi followed Liora's path through the swamp, pushing through hanging vines and navigating around pools of murky water. What emerged before them was nothing short of magnificent - a sprawling mansion crafted entirely of pure wood, its organic architecture seeming to grow right out of the swamp itself. Warm light spilled from dozens of windows, casting golden reflections on the surrounding water.
Anakin gaped at the sight, his previous combat readiness forgotten in his amazement. "Okay, the Council clearly got a miscalculation out of this," he muttered, taking in the grandeur of the structure. Obi-Wan nodded silently beside him, his eyes scanning every detail of their surroundings.
Liora turned to face them from her position on the mansion's steps, her fog-like markings seeming to glow softly in the warm light spilling from the windows. Her two raptor companions melted away into the surrounding greenery with barely a rustle of leaves. A smile played across her lips - mysterious and knowing, yet somehow warmly inviting.
"You're welcome here, Jedi Knights," she announced, her voice carrying both authority and hospitality. "Long years have passed since InGen captured me, and even longer have passed since I killed last and every one of them." Her golden-flecked eyes flickered with something ancient and dangerous. "Humans aren't welcome here, but since you carry the light, you may join me in a feast." Her smile widened, showing teeth that seemed just slightly too sharp to be entirely human.
Anakin stepped forward, his curiosity overcoming his caution. "Excuse me, but I got the impression that you were under siege, that you were in danger. That's why the Council sent us to deal with this InGen operation of yours." His blue eyes narrowed in confusion. "But here you are, unharmed and unbound. Why would you send a distress signal?"
Liora's welcoming smile vanished like morning mist, replaced by something more cryptic. "I didn't send it," she said simply, and pointed behind them.
The ground trembled beneath their feet as a massive Tyrannosaurus Rex emerged from the shadows, each footstep sending ripples through the nearby water. Its scales gleamed in the mansion's warm light, and its eyes held an intelligence that no fossil could have hinted at. Both Jedi immediately ignited their lightsabers, the blue glow reflecting off the creature's teeth.
"He did," Liora explained, seemingly amused by their defensive stances.
The T-Rex lowered its enormous head, regarding the two newcomers with what could only be described as disdain. "I still don't understand why you would want them here, your Highness," it rumbled, its voice deep as thunder and surprisingly articulate. The massive creature sniffed at Obi-Wan and Anakin's lightsabers, sending hot breath washing over them that made their robes flutter. "They're simple and frail."
Liora shrugged, her fog-like markings rippling with the motion. "But they carry the light. Let them through," she commanded, her tone gentle but brooking no argument.
The T-Rex huffed, a sound like a hot wind through ancient trees. "As you say," it rumbled, and turned to lumber back into the forest, each footstep leaving deep impressions in the soggy ground.
Obi-Wan and Anakin sheathed their lightsabers, the humming blue blades vanishing with a distinctive snap-hiss. "Well, that's something," Obi-Wan muttered, his usual composure slightly rattled by the encounter. Beside him, Anakin chuffed out a nervous laugh, his hand still hovering near his weapon's hilt.
"Are you coming, gentlemen?" Liora's voice floated out from inside the mansion, where she had already disappeared while they were processing their encounter with the talking T-Rex.
Obi-Wan and Anakin shared another look - one of countless wordless conversations between master and former apprentice. "Well, might as well do this," Obi-Wan said with resigned determination, and began walking up the steps. Anakin shook his head in disbelief but followed his master's lead, as he had done countless times before on equally strange - though perhaps less prehistoric - missions.
As they crossed the threshold, the interior of the mansion revealed itself in layers of astonishing detail. Vines with luminescent flowers crept along wooden walls that seemed to have been grown rather than built. The air carried the scent of earth and ancient things, mixed with something sweeter - like nectar from extinct flowers.
"I can sense your confusion," Liora said, gliding ahead of them down a corridor where roots served as architectural support beams. "You're wondering why Rex would summon Jedi to my domain." Her fog-markings pulsed gently with each word.
"Rex?" Anakin couldn't help but ask. "You named the T-Rex... Rex?"
A musical laugh escaped their hostess. "He named himself, young one. We all chose our own names after the fall of InGen." She paused by a massive window, where they could see more dinosaurs moving through the swamp - some flying, others wading through the murky water. "They were so proud of their genetic manipulations, you see. So certain they could control what they'd created. They never expected their 'assets' to develop consciousness, let alone society."
Obi-Wan stroked his beard thoughtfully. "The Council received reports of a powerful Force-sensitive being held against their will. We assumed..."
"You assumed I was the prisoner," Liora finished for him. "When in truth, I was what they never meant to create - a bridge between ancient and modern, between beast and being." She turned to face them fully, her golden-flecked eyes seeming to peer into their very souls. "The Force flows differently here, doesn't it, Master Kenobi? Can you feel it?"
"It's... primal," Obi-Wan admitted. "Raw, untamed. Like touching the heartbeat of the planet itself."
A distant roar echoed through the mansion, causing the wooden walls to vibrate slightly. Anakin's hand twitched toward his lightsaber again, but Liora waved dismissively.
"Just the evening hunt. Velociraptor pack taking down something for dinner. Speaking of which..." She gestured toward an opening doorway, where warm light spilled out. "I promised you a feast, did I not?"
"Before we accept your hospitality," Anakin said, surprising Obi-Wan with his diplomacy, "might we know why Rex felt the need to summon us? Clearly you're not in danger, but something prompted him to reach out to the Jedi Council."
Liora's expression darkened slightly, the fog-markings on her skin swirling faster. "InGen is gone, yes. I made sure of that." Her voice took on an edge that reminded them of predator's teeth. "But their research survived. Others have found it, and they've been... experimenting. Creating things that shouldn't exist, even by our standards."
"Worse than conscious dinosaurs?" Obi-Wan asked carefully.
"Much worse," came a deep voice, and they turned to find Rex's massive head peering through a window designed specifically for such interactions. "They're making creatures without souls, without minds. Just weapons. And they're coming here, seeking Liora's secrets."
"Our Queen protects us," Rex continued, his enormous eye fixing on the Jedi. "But even she cannot be everywhere at once. We need allies who understand what it means to protect life, not just exploit it." He pulled back slightly, shadows playing across his scaled face. "That's why I called you. The Force led me to reach out to the Jedi."
Liora gave a slight bow of her head to the massive creature. "And as always, old friend, your wisdom serves us well." She turned back to the Jedi, her golden eyes glowing brighter. "Now then, shall we discuss this over dinner? I believe our chefs have prepared something special. Don't worry," she added with a smile that was just a touch too sharp, "it's all vegetarian. We find that serving meat to guests can be... uncomfortable for all involved."
