Five
"I'm going out," Her mother said as she put on her black cloak. "Don't go anywhere." She told her. Grace wiped another tear from her eye and her mother knew she wouldn't. She slid down her hair before she pulled it back up and started to go upstairs, when she suddenly tripped. The board was loose, so she bent down to fix it when she saw something underneath. She picked it up. It was Flynn's satchel, and it had the tiara inside. She picked it up and put it on, looking in the mirror and then thinking about the picture of the lost princess. Could it have been her? However, something else quickly came to her mind. If the tiara was here, where was Flynn?
She realised that he must be in trouble, so being careful that her mother couldn't be seen from the tower, she threw the strap of the bag over her head and went down.
"Maximus! What are you doing here?" She asked as she had encountered him a the bottom. "Think you could give me a ride?" She said, climbing up onto him. She took the reins and guided him back towards the castle.
Once they had reached the castle, she was stopped by a guard.
"Come with me." He told her.
"Where to?"
"You're being arrested for thievery." She was confused, there was no way he would be able to see the contents of her bag.
"Oh... I wasn't stealing Maximus, I was returning him," She told him. He began to lead her towards the prison. "Please," She sighed. He let her go, and took Maximus back to his stable. It was the perfect time to run in and find Flynn.
She took one of the torches off the walls and used it to help guide her through the dark, cobbled corridors.
She eventually saw him. He was being held in a room with some of those strong guys. She tried to break through the door, but it was iron, there was no way she could do it.
She held her hair to it and sung gently under her breath and it blasted open. She smiled for a brief moment before realising what was happening.
"Stop!!" She cried. "He doesn't deserve this! He doesn't have your tiara,"
"If he doesn't, then who does?" The guard asked her.
"I do," She sighed. She threw the bag towards them. They started to come after her. She realised that she might be killed instead. She quickly ran inside, pulled Flynn with her and continued to run.
"Thank you," He told her.
"No time for that, run!!"
They ran through the corridors and out onto the streets of the little town.
They went around a corner into a dark alley and decided to hide there until they were sure the guards were gone.
"I'm sorry, Flynn." She said.
"For what?"
"I should have given you that satchel earlier, but I was too scared. And I guess, now I don't have to be." He smiled.
"I should be honest with you too, it wasn't a satchel." Grace giggled, before looking around the corner.
"Let's go." She told him. They continued to run through the town.
"Where to?" He asked her.
"My tower. It's the only place we'll be safe, and if we make it before my mother gets home, she won't kill me."
"Kill you?!"
"Not actually."
"Oh."
He let her towards the forest, as they ran through the trees. Suddenly they heard barking.
"Dogs." He said. They were right behind them, they would never be able to outrun them. She threw her hair around a branch and swung up, and as she did he grabbed hold of her leg. She landed on the branch and untied her hair.
"We should stay up here. It'll be safer," She suggested.
"Agreed." He said, hiding the dog bite on his arm. They jumped from branch to branch, trying not to be caught.
As she jumped to the next branch, her foot slipped. She had almost fallen, but luckily he had caught her leg. She stretched upwards and grabbed hold of his hand.
"Thanks," She said, taking a deep breath. That was close.
Once they were certain the dogs were gone, they continued back on foot. As they walked together, he began to speak.
"I have a confession." She looked at him, puzzled. "I... I like you."
She paused for a moment.
"I'm sorry..." He looked to the other side.
"What for?.." She replied. "I guess I kind of like you too..." She looked away with her shy face.
"You do?" He asked. She nodded, and he smiled.
They continued in silence. Neither of them had the courage to speak after those confessions.
Eventually, he stopped them at the cliff they were at earlier.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"I need to tell you something." He replied. He pulled something out of his jacket.
"The tiara? You took it?"
"It's important. That's why."
"How?"
"Watch."
He took out the largest diamond from the tiara, revealing a small space inside. From it, he pulled out a small item.
"A bean?" She asked.
"A magic bean." He replied, handing it to her as she inspected it. "Come with me."
She hesitated for a moment. Her mother. She couldn't leave this place. No matter how dull it was, it was her home.
"Flynn, I'm sorry, I can't, I need to get home to my mother." She told him.
"Wouldn't you rather start a new life? A better life? Away from that witch?"
"Witch?" Grace turned around.
"Mother."
"Where do you think you're going? Trying to run away with lover boy, are you?" Her mother asked. She fell silent. "Now get here. Now." She extended her hand to her.
"Grace," He whispered, also holding out his hand.
"Make your choice."
Grace didn't know who to choose. Her mother, or her lover?
She sighed as she threw the bean over the cliff. Flynn looked at her in awe, she'd just wasted his chance at a new life, whereas her mother saw it differently, she was going to start a new life.
"Grace," Her mother began. She looked at her mother, before grabbing his hand and pulling him off the cliff. He quickly grabbed onto the edge before they fell.
"Are you crazy?!" He yelled. Her mother approached to pull them back up so she could take Grace and turn Flynn in.
"Flynn, just let go for gods sake!" She told him.
"We'll die!"
"Flynn, trust me."
She looked into his eyes, and he looked into hers. She took a deep breath and let go, right before her mother could get them.
