Eight
Having no memory of ever falling asleep, Jungkook's eyes crack open in confusion. In the moment, he forgets where he is, and he startles, stiffing up once he realizes he isn't physically alone at all.
He lifts his head slowly, but then he halts once he realizes the heavy weight against his head isn't a shoulder, but another head that's leaning up against his, and his eyes widen as he fully wakes up now. Seokjin and Jungkook had their heads against each other's, sleeping out the rest of the flight.
Not wanting to wake Seokjin up just yet, Jungkook rests his head against his even more to support him. He checks his phone quietly, finding that it's now late in the evening and they should be arriving anytime soon.
Fuck it.
He taps the CEO on the arm to wake him up, but Seokjin nuzzles his head against his even more and shifts towards the touch, draping his arms around Jungkook's forearm and holding it there. He's cute, Jungkook thinks. But being cute isn't going to pass right now because Jungkook decides to ignore it and taps Seokjin's thigh with his free hand.
"Seokjin-ssi." He just about shudders once he hears a confused, dazed hum in his ear. It's so close. It's right in his ear. "Seokjin-ssi, we'll be landing soon, sir. Wake up."
For a split second, Seokjin's hold tightens on Jungkook's arm, but then it becomes stiff and within the speed of light, Seokjin pulls his hands away and raises his head, opening his eyes wide and staring at the seat in front of him. His eyes are red and puffy, in shock, and he doesn't even look at Jungkook.
"Sorry," he apologizes in a low tone, which sounds weak from just waking up, but Jungkook loves the way it sounds now more than ever. It's deep, it's soothing, and Jungkook loves how it reverberates through his chest.
"It's okay," says the younger in a similar tone, but he doesn't care about it as much as he does Seokjin's voice. "We have about an hour left, I think."
Seokjin nods to himself.
They gather their things and get ready for when the plane begins to land. When they've finally settled on the ground, Jungkook stretches as they get up to walk off, his arms above his head, and he arches his back to pop it. Seokjin is behind him, he realizes—the reason he realizes this is because his shirt was riding up his skin, and he quickly lowers his hands again, hoping Seokjin didn't see.
The flight went well, thankfully. Unfortunately, Seokjin calls for a ride for all three of them to ride together in, and Jungkook had forgotten all about Kunwoo being on the plane, but now he's forced to stand on the opposite side of Seokjin, pouting as he thinks about being stuck in a vehicle with his ex for another thirty minutes up to an hour.
Sometimes, Jungkook forgets that Seokjin is rich.
When his private driver comes rolling up in a shiny black Mercedes van, he's definitely reminded. The vehicle has three rows of seats, which is amazing for Jungkook. He goes straight to the back after Seokjin tells them to get in while he makes a phone call. And while Jungkook was glad he could sit in the very back, presumably away from Kunwoo, he's absolutely appalled as Kunwoo heads right in behind him and sits in the seat by his.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Sitting," says an irritating Kunwoo.
Jungkook scowls. "You should've sat in the middle seat. I don't want to be anywhere near you," he spits out, scrunching his nose as he looks out the window he's sitting next to. He can hear Kunwoo scoff, or maybe chuckle, he isn't sure.
"Too bad you'll be near me all week," he reminds Jungkook and it makes him furrow his brows together in anger. He won't be near Kunwoo, not unless he's forced to like he is right now. And this is the closest they've been since breaking up, with Kunwoo's leg practically pressed up against his, and Jungkook has to physically squeeze himself up against the Mercedes to get away.
"I will not be near you," he grits out. "Don't you have a girlfriend who would be very upset with you sitting next to me? You know, the one you clearly lied to about me? Asshole."
Kunwoo shrugs. "She won't know."
Anger fumes through Jungkook's blood. "She won't know?" he huffs out, narrowing his eyes at Kunwoo. "Is that what you told her when you were kissing her? When you were cheating on me with her? Did you tell her that I wouldn't know? Wouldn't figure it out? Did you think you could get away with it, Kunwoo?"
"It wasn't like that," Kunwoo tells him. Obviously a lie, because he doesn't elaborate on it. Jungkook is fuming and could probably lift this entire car with the amount of adrenaline in his body right now. He wants to strangle Kunwoo so damn badly.
"I'm sure it wasn't," he says sarcastically. But then he decides to tell him, "I hope you have the worst life ever, Choi Kunwoo. You and your little—"
"Oh? You two are sitting together?" Seokjin accidentally cuts Jungkook off. He glares at the CEO without meaning too; he's just pissed at the world. It makes Seokjin flinch, like he's taken aback, but Jungkook forces an extremely fake smile to try and please him again.
"Sure are," he says, then leans his elbow against the van, resting his head on his palm and looking out the window once more.
Slowly, Seokjin gets into the second row of seats. Not even Kunwoo says anything to him. So, their drive ends up feeling much longer than it would've if Jungkook were in a better mood and sitting beside literally anyone except for Kunwoo, who keeps bumping his knee against his.
Jungkook's mood is so sour that he can't enjoy the sight of Chicago, and whenever they get to the big hotel, he can't even be happy about the grand sight of it all—the tall buildings, the traffic, how fancy the hotel looks, nothing.
The driver parks by the entrance to let them out and Seokjin is quick to exit, but Kunwoo is not. Jungkook glares at him. He's gathering everything and nothing all at the same time. He even takes his time to put his phone in his pocket. He's in Jungkook's way, though. He's doing it on purpose.
"Can you fucking go, please?"
Kunwoo's eyes land on his. "You're much more feisty now, aren't you?" He looks amused by the fact. It angers Jungkook to the max.
"Can you stop being so fucking annoying?" He rolls his eyes and practically climbs over Kunwoo to get out, not caring that his ass is right in his face—Kunwoo can kiss his damn ass for all he cares.
When he exits the Mercedes, he frowns to himself. He didn't even get to enjoy the free ride in a nice, expensive car. He loves cars! It's so cool but he couldn't admire it.
Jungkook sighs to himself, straightening out his clothes. He doesn't even notice Seokjin's eyes on him until he looks up and around at the hotel entrance—it's huge and has modern touches to it.
"You alright?"
Shocked by such a question, Jungkook stares up at Seokjin. "Am I..." He clears his throat. "Of course, sir. I'm just tired. Ready to get some rest."
Right.
Even though he rested for hours on the flight.
"Let's get you to your room, then." Seokjin gestures for Jungkook to enter the hotel, and even though Kunwoo finally exits the van, Seokjin places his hand on Jungkook's lower back and leads him inside. Something about the special treatment makes Jungkook feel a little better. Fuck Kunwoo.
Seokjin checks them into the hotel and he takes the keycard for room 314, giving 315 to Jungkook and 313 to Kunwoo. They head up the elevator and Jungkook is pleased to see that a man is carrying their luggage for them—he's never seen it be done in real life before. He's always carried his own.
When they get to their floor, Jungkook is thankful to finally get in his room all by himself. As he inserts his keycard, he glances over at Seokjin who's doing the same thing, and he wonders why his tummy feels all weird at the thought of Seokjin sleeping in the room next to his.
He dismisses the thought and enters his room, expecting just a bed and maybe a television. And while he does see those things, it's completely different from the rooms Jungkook has stayed in before. The bed is huge, neatly covered. The TV is huge, mounted on the wall, and unlike most hotel rooms that have a mini fridge and maybe a microwave, this hotel room has a mini kitchen with a counter and sink, a half-sized refrigerator, and a fancy microwave next to a coffee maker. There's a small table with two chairs to sit and eat meals at.
There's even a sofa and coffee table in the center of the room.
And the bathroom is its own separate room, but it's half the size of the hotel room itself. It has a standing shower with a waterfall shower head and a tub at the center wall, which Jungkook is excited to see because it has jets in it that he's definitely going to use. Right by the bathroom door, there's a cabinet door to open, which reveals a nice closet that automatically turns on a light when it's opened, and it has a full mirror on the door to look at his outfits.
Jungkook loves the room so much that he wouldn't mind spending his entire salary coming here, if it meant he could just stay in a hotel room with free wifi and jets in the tub. That's all he needs. Oh, and the bed. As Jungkook lies down on it, he definitely realizes that it might be a personal favorite—it's firm, just how he likes it.
He pushes all the pillows off of the bed except for one, but it's not one that he puts under his head. After he strips his clothes and is left in only boxers, he cuddles up to the pillow and smiles into it as he closes his eyes and falls asleep peacefully.
~~~
It's early in the morning when Jungkook wakes up from the best sleep he's ever had in his entire life. His bones feel great as he stretches. Everything feels amazing.
He sits up on the bed, smiling to himself. But then, as he's planning to go shower, he realizes that he never got his luggage last night. The man who brought their luggage up had to tend to someone else first, then probably went to Kunwoo's room, then Seokjin's, and oh no.
Rushing off the bed, Jungkook throws his clothes back on and doesn't even freshen up before rushing to room 314. His hair is a mess, sticking up like a sprout of grass, but he doesn't notice it. He also doesn't notice the obvious red spot on his cheek where he had his bicep pressed up against it in his sleep.
But after he knocks on Seokjin's door and the CEO answers it, Seokjin seems to notice these things. First, his eyes land on Jungkook's hair, and then his cheek, and he smiles despite Jungkook's panicked state.
"Relax," he tells Jungkook, and as if he knew exactly what Jungkook was worried about, he reaches somewhere behind his door and rolls a familiar black suitcase out along with Jungkook's black backpack that's hanging on it.
"Oh my God, thank you so much!" he exclaims happily, letting out a relieved sigh as he takes his suitcase from Seokjin. "I fell asleep as soon as I hit my room. I didn't even think about getting my things."
Seokjin chuckles and now that Jungkook's initial panic is gone, he observes the older. It's only nine in the morning, yet he's wearing casual business clothes, as usual. Navy blue button-up, tucked into black slacks. Jungkook doesn't expect less from him. He's never seen Seokjin wear a singular comfortable clothing piece in his month of knowing him.
"I figured you'd fallen asleep," Seokjin says. "The bellhop knocked, but you didn't answer. I just happened to be in the hall, so I told him I'd give it to you."
Tilting his head, Jungkook smiles. "Thank you." His sprout waves around happily and it draws Seokjin's attention. He smiles in return, laughing fondly, it seems.
"You should go get ready," he tells Jungkook. "We'll be leaving at ten-thirty."
Jungkook's eyes widen. "Okay, thanks!" He rushes back to his room, excited to use the waterfall shower and the fancy closet he has.
The set is huge.
There's big studio cameras all over the place, making sure to get every angle possible. There's tables with laptops, and cords are everywhere, lined across the floor. And there's people scattered about as well, mostly Americans who burst out into loud laughter as they speak with each other like they're best friends, even though most of them don't know each other that well.
The atmosphere is nice, at least. Jungkook might be shy by each bold introduction, but he realizes very quickly that Americans will talk to anyone and everyone they see, so he has to at least greet them back to be kind.
After awkwardly following Seokjin for about twenty minutes, he tells Jungkook and Kunwoo to go take a break by the snacks table while he talks to someone on the phone. Jungkook stands by the table as far away from his ex as possible, and he can't resist the donut box because he's never tried American food, so he takes a donut and bites into it, loving the strawberry jam. He finishes it with one last bite, just as Seokjin comes walking back up to him.
"Hey," the CEO says with a smile, gesturing to the man who's stepping up behind him—he's a little taller than them, has a strong stance, and he has dimples as he smiles at Jungkook too. "This is the director. My brother, Kim Namjoon."
The director? His brother?!
Jungkook's eyes widen and he nearly chokes on the donut. Thankfully, some staff woman walks by right at that moment with bottles of water, and she offers him one.
"So glad that hyung is finally joining us on set," Namjoon says in a deep, teasing voice. "It's been, like, ten years—"
"Two months, Joon-ah—"
"—since I last saw you in person!" Namjoon laughs, and Jungkook lowers the water bottle from his lips to smile back.
Seokjin rolls his eyes. "You know I don't do well with people. Or traveling."
"Oh, really?" Namjoon chuckles and leans into Jungkook's direction just as he begins taking another sip of water. "Don't let hyung fool you. He might seem shy at first, but he once made out with some guy he just met—" Jungkook chokes on the water after inhaling a gasp, and he gasps for more air as Namjoon continues talking, "He's a great CEO who pulls off meetings with rooms full of people. He might seem shy, but he's good with people. Are— Are you alright, man?"
Jungkook nods, and Seokjin gestures urgently to him. "Namjoon-ah! Meet Jeon Jungkook," he grits out curtly, pointing his hand hard into the air to introduce the younger. Something about his urgency makes Jungkook's cheeks heat up. He bows a little to the director, whose eyes are now widened in shock, but his shocked look quickly turns into a smirk.
"Oh," he lets out smoothly, "so you know hyung very well, don't you?"
Seokjin clasps his hands together loudly. "Anyways!" His ears are red, Jungkook notices. But his cheeks are just as red. "Namjoon-ah, this is Jungkook, one of the interviewees."
"I see. It's nice to meet you, Jungkook-ssi. I'm looking forward to seeing your edit."
Jungkook assumes he's on the voting committee as well. Again, he bows. "Thank you. It's nice to meet you, Namjoon-ssi." He didn't even know Seokjin had a brother. It's obvious, though, with the way Seokjin lightly smacks him and tells him Come on, I'll introduce you to Kunwoo now.
Unfortunately, Namjoon asks to take a photo with them. Fortunately, Kunwoo is at one end and Jungkook is at the other end, with the two more important people in the middle—the Kim brothers.
Jungkook stands awkwardly for the picture until Seokjin ghosts his fingers over his lower back. He leans into the touch and smiles, blushing at the simplest action. Practically leaning into his side, Jungkook feels nice and warm. Maybe in another world, this could be a couple's photo—it makes Jungkook smile brighter like a big dummy, and that's the smile that the camera catches.
Great.
After their photo is taken, Namjoon splits ways, informing the staff to get ready to begin filming. Jungkook and Kunwoo are brought chairs to sit at the side of the set, as well as Seokjin, but his chair is placed by Namjoon's.
Jungkook scoots his chair over just enough to be away from Kunwoo and then he observes the set instead of Kunwoo's eye-roll.
The set is big and gorgeous. They weren't informed what the scene would be about because it's up to their interpretation and creativity to edit it, and Jungkook plans to check off all the context clues as they go on.
The set is a big open room with a chandelier hanging above it. He assumes immediately that it's for some kind of dance or party, much like the one he'd just attended last week. When he glances around to look for the casting, he sees them coming in one by one, wearing fancy dresses and suits. It's modern attire.
The main actors are a woman and man dressed somehow better than the rest of the cast. Once they finally start acting, Jungkook is shocked to hear the lines talking about enemies, spying, and mafia bosses. It's gradually settling into Jungkook's mind, the vibe of the scene—they're undercover at an important celebration, perhaps spies, or maybe they're the bad guys.
Jungkook watches in awe for hours, eyes glistening and sometimes flinching with the fight scenes that eventually break down. Set pieces get broken for the scene, including minor explosions that break faux walls and fancy statues, and there's a fog machine to set the mood better. Jungkook loves action movies, and he knows just how he'd love to edit all of these cool scenes.
He glances over at Kunwoo, wondering if he's just as into it, knowing that he doesn't like action movies like Jungkook does. It's an advantage. And judging by the way Kunwoo looks uncomfortable in his seat while watching the scenes go down, Jungkook feels like he might have it in the bag over him.
Then he glances over to his left, where Seokjin has been sitting by the director this entire time. He flinches back a little as Seokjin turns his head as well, both of them finding each other's eyes at the same time. Seokjin gives him a little smile, then a thumbs up.
He returns the gesture.
Eventually, Namjoon calls cuts for today. In exactly two days from now, they'll be on another set, which Jungkook and Kunwoo will have to edit together as two scenes. Until then, he's free to do whatever he wants. So, it's no surprise when they're on their way back to the hotel—Jungkook is sitting by Seokjin in the middle row—and Seokjin asks him if he wants to go shopping tomorrow.
Giving him a look that says really? Jungkook asks, "Are you sure? You really don't have to, Seokjin-ssi. My desk is perfectly fine with no decor."
"Absolutely not," he argues in return. "You should have something nice, Jungkook-ah." Suddenly, they both hear a light scoff, and Seokjin's eyebrows furrow before softening up, his eyes widening. He turns around in his seat to look back at Kunwoo, who's sitting in the back all alone. "Kunwoo-ssi, I'll take you shopping on Thursday. I meant to tell you, I plan to buy you something as well as Jungkook-ssi. How's that sound?"
"Sounds great, boss."
Seokjin sits back in his seat, scratching awkwardly behind his ear. "Anyway," he whispers to Jungkook, who smiles at the flustered look on his face. He's so cute. "There's a heated pool at the hotel if either of you would like to join me at it on Thursday. It's technically our last day to enjoy the trip, so I thought it might be fun to swim."
"Of course," Kunwoo speaks up, but Seokjin is looking at Jungkook only, waiting for his response. The younger shrugs.
"I'll have to buy something to swim in, but sure."
Seokjin smiles. "Great. We can shop for that, too." He stares ahead, looking pleased that he's getting to take Jungkook shopping tomorrow.
Deep down, a part Jungkook is also pleased, really happy that the CEO cares enough to do such a thing for him.
However, another part of Jungkook stings once he reminds himself that yeah, Kim Seokjin is a nice CEO. A nice boss. And that's all he is. It's all he'll ever be to Jungkook.
