10. Safe

Start song outside with the cuties by Frankie cosmos

THIS IS SO LATE IM SORRY.

Also happy thanksgiving to all my Canadians <3

Dallon drove everyone home after school. He held Brendon's hand over the console, lacing their fingers together in a tight safe grip.

Tyler only felt safe when Dallon was driving. He made sure to let Ashley and Brendon know that Dallon really was the better driver out of all of them. Dallon was easily more attentive on the road and really he didn't get distracted easily. Unless Brendon was really hyper, which he seemed to be most of the time.

Tyler didn't know if he could deal with being around Brendon as often as Dallon was. They were attached at the hip and as much as Tyler loved Brendon he'd never dream of spending that much time with him. Even he needed his distance every once in a while, except for when he was in little space. When he was in his headspace he needed everyone.

Ashley had her legs on top of his, Tyler holding onto her ankle and fussing with the material of her jeans. He wasn't sure how she was boiling hot in a sweater and pants but he didn't question it.

The radio was on, they'd only just left the school parking lot among the other hundreds of kids. Dallon always made sure to be one of the firsts out to avoid traffic.

Tyler wasn't surprised when Dallon turned down the music though. He looked at him in the visor mirror. He was such a dad friend, Tyler thought it was hilarious.

"How was English class Tyler?"

Tyler shrugged. He hadn't really done much in class other than be thankful that Mr.Dun didn't know about his little space, he's distracted himself did the entire hour. "I had a supply teacher, so i'd say pretty good. I talked to Jenna the whole time."

"That cheerleader?" Brendon asked, holding his head at angle where he could properly see Tyler.

Tyler nodded. "Yeah. She's nice."

"Does Tyler have a crush?" Brendon teased. He was grinning, all toothy and Tyler rolled his eyes.

"Definitely not." He smiled. "Might ditch you guys and just become best friends with her instead though."

Ashley gasped beside him, landing a tap to his shoulder. "You wouldn't dare!"

"I would."

"You wouldn't." Brendon said swiftly, Dallon simply hummed in agreement as he drove. Tyler wasn't sure who was being dropped off first, usually it was Ashley but she had work today.

Tyler rolled his eyes, wiggling around in his seat. "Here lemme call her, she'll agree."

"You have her number?" Brendon asked.

"She gave it to me today." He shrugged moving Ashley's legs off of his lap so he could pull his phone out from his back pocket. She huffed but brought her legs so she was sitting criss-cross apple sauce. Which really wasn't the safest way to be seated but Ashley didn't care.

He searched through his contacts tapping on her name. She hadn't really told him why he needed to have her number but she picked up after the third ring much to his surprise. He wasn't exactly sure where their friendship stood at the moment but he knew she was laid back.

"Tyler?" She said happily. She was always nice to him and Tyler appreciated it a lot. She was sweet.

"Hey Jenna."

"What's up? Didn't I just see you?"

Tyler laughed. "Yeah. I'm calling with important news." He started, attempting to contain his laughter. "You're my new best friend now. You're very qualified for the position."

He heard cheering on the other line before Jenna replied. "Hell yeah. Who am I replacing?"

Tyler grinned, eyeing his friends. "Brendon, Dallon and Ashley."You've got big shoes to fill girly."

More loud noises on the other line Jenna said. "Seems easy enough."

"No one replaces us." Brendon yelled.

"Bren." Dallon said, clearly slightly annoyed. Tyler didn't pay any mind to it.

Ashley was back on her phone, her leg shaking. She was always jittery, always moving. Ashley could never stay still.

"Jenna you good?"

"Yeah." She said. Tyler smiled. "I've gotta go though. Cheer practice!"

"Oh, okay bye then."

Then there was silence for a minute or so, Tyler bringing Ashley's legs back over his thighs in comfort. She poked him in the rib with her foot.

Jenna forgotten Ashley asked. "Did you talk to Mr.Dun?"

Tyler nodded. "Yeah. We talked, I think i'm good with him now."

He wanted to drop the subject, it was fine an over with and he didn't know why he kept becoming a topic of conversation. Not that he minded.

"Good, i'm proud of you."

Tyler laughed, slapping at his knees. "For what?"

"Facing your biggest fear. Mr.Dun."

Tyler flushed in embarrassment which he seemed to be doing more frequently. He wasn't a fan of it. His hands came up to cover his face. "I'm not scared of him, oh my god no."

Ashley sighed. "He's too hot to be scary anyways."

Brendon gasped landing a hard slap to the dashboard. "Are you saying hot people can't be scary?"

"Maybe."

"Well you're wrong, Dallon is terrifying." And Dallon snorted as he reeled the car to the right.

"Dallon is a big teddy bear. I don't know what you guys are talking about."

*

Tyler ended up being dropped of first since his house was the closest. He dreaded stepping out of the truck but he didn't really have much of a choice, he hugged Ashley before leaving and said bye to Brendon and Dallon. His parents had started complaining about him spending too much time with his friends which he understood in away but he'd expected them to be glad he had any at all.

He walked in on a familiar scene, his mom's cooking scenting the house and his dad being no where to be seen. It was rare that his dad was ever home and he'd grown so used to it he'd be surprised to see him at all. When he was home his only interest was basketball and school. It wasn't Tyler how are you? It was Tyler how's basketball? How's the team?

He was just never home and Tyler was desensitized to it.

His mom on the other hand was always home. Today she was humming something when he walked into the kitchen. She was always singing around the house, if she wasn't something was wrong.

"Hey." Tyler said, dropping his backpack to the floor beside a kitchen stool. His mom continued cutting vegetables, she looked at him in acknowledgment and smiled.

"How was your day?"

Tyler slumped over the counter, resting his elbows on the marble and pushing away the fruit bowl to make room for himself. "Good."

"I'm glad." She said as she gathered the chopped potatoes and carrots and let them slide into a silver bowl. "And how was practice?"

Tyler sighed. "Fine."

She frowned. "Just fine?"

Tyler shook his head in hopes of clearing things up. "It's was as good as it always is, don't worry mom."

And then she smiled again. "Perfect." Her voice had a tight strain to it.

The conversation ended there. It was stale and dry, it was going no where. Tyler never knew what to say to her or how to continue a conversation. She didn't put in much effort either. Ever since he'd turned 9 talking had become something they didn't do often. He could barely remember a good conversation he'd had with her about something other then school and his future.

He hated all the conversation he remembered them having too.

His mom went back to humming and Tyler left, slipping his backpack on, it was heavy as he made his way to his bedroom. He was already bored.

He was always bored at home.

Author's note:
