(03) sibling rivalry
"So, whatcha gonna wear?"
Natsumi turned and stared at the golden-haired boy, currently sprawled over her bed. He was dressed casually, wearing a black MSBY hoodie (made of cotton, since it was a little too hot to wear an actual hoodie) over blue jeans. In spite of making fun of his fashion sense, Natsumi could not deny that Atsumu knew how to dress up well. She always tended to be indecisive when it came to picking clothes, even though she technically worked as a fashion photographer. You'd think it'd be easier for her to choose clothes, but nope.
"I'm just asking 'cause yer taking too much time," Atsumu said as he turned over, now lying on his stomach. "We need to leave soon if we're gonna be on time."
"I'll just tell Osamu-san that we're late because of you," Natsumi stuck her tongue, before turning away.
"Tch." she could hear the pout in Atsumu's voice. "Yer mean, ya know that?"
Natsumi just scoffed as she turned her attention to her wardrobe. There was no need for her to be so nervous. After all, she and Atsumu were just going to visit Osamu and Saori at Onigiri Miya. She had already met them before, so she shouldn't be nervous. But...now, she was meeting them as Atsumu's fake girlfriend. Which meant things were going to be different. Which in turn meant, this meeting could be called a double date.
So yeah, she had reasons to be nervous.
"Ya know what? I'm picking yer outfit. Yer simply too indecisive," Atsumu suddenly got up and walked behind her, his arms brushing against hers as he joined her in standing in front of her wardrobe.
"I don't trust your fashion sense," Natsumi said as she moved aside. "But I'll give you a chance."
Atsumu quickly scanned her wardrobe, before he reached out and grabbed two things. He pushed them into her chest. "Here. Now go change, before ya make us late."
"W-what? Atsumu?!"
He didn't give her a chance to reply as he started pushing her towards the bathroom. "Hurry!"
"Alright, okay! Don't push me!"
Natsumi staggered towards her bathroom rather quickly, ignoring Atsumu's shout of 'Be quick!'. 'Who does he think he is, trying to force me to get ready quickly? He's such an idiot. Stupid.'
She entered the bathroom and closed the door behind her. Then, she stared at what Atsumu had handed over to her. It was a red flower dress, one which she hadn't worn in a while. The second thing was her leather jacket, a staple of her outfit whenever she went out for photoshoots. She held the two together and what do you know...they looked surprisingly good together. (Though it was a little too hot to wear a leather jacket. Maybe she could just tie it around her waist?)
Natsumi didn't waste more time as she started getting ready. She quickly put on the dress, and turned around and stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. She looked surprisingly good. And with a little red lipstick, she would look better. She tied to the leather jacket around her waist and twirled.
Perfect. As for her hair, it would be best to leave it open. She reached over the sink and pressed at the side of the bathroom mirror. It swung open, revealing a hidden cabinet where she kept a hairbrush, some makeup related things and other random stuff including soap. She grabbed the hairbrush and quickly combed her hair. Time to go then.
Natsumi opened the bathroom door and stepped out. Atsumu, who was sitting on the bed, looked up as he returned his phone to his pocket. He let out an appreciative whistle as he stared at her. "See, told ya I've got good fashion sense. Better than yours anyway."
"Yeah, yeah, don't gloat." Natsumi rolled her eyes as she walked up to him. "Are you ready to leave then? My dear fake boyfriend."
"Of course, I am," And the fool had the audacity to wink. "I'm always ready."
"Shut up," Natsumi spoke as she looped her arm through his. "Let's go now."
"Your wish is my command," Atsumu snickered, covering his mouth with his free hand. Natsumi just sent him a glare as they finally left her bedroom and then, her apartment.
The Miya Twins together were quite chaotic souls. Natsumi came to know them both when she moved to the Hyogo prefecture right at the beginning of her third year. She had felt immensely out of place, but purely by chance, she was sat next to Atsumu, who had cracked the stupidest joke and she had laughed. That's how their friendship had begun.
She, of course, knew Osamu, but not that well. He was a lot more disciplined than Atsumu, but being the latter's brother, it just meant he was secretly a chaotic being. But her affinity to Atsumu was intense and he grew to be her closest friend.
And now fake boyfriend, of course.
With Atsumu, there was never a moment of peace and silence. Only of sheer chaos and noise. And if Natsumi were to be honest, she liked this. She liked the chaos he brought and then wondered what that said about her.
Thoughts like these were irrelevant now, as they arrived at Onigiri Miya. The sun was hanging low in the sky, which meant it was almost time for it to set. The restaurant's sign was flipped to indicate that it was closed, but the light teeming through the door told them that there were still people inside. Specifically Osamu and his girlfriend, Saori.
"Oi, Samu!" Atsumu called loudly, as he knocked on the door. "We're here! Open up!"
"Atsumu!" Natsumi gave him a pointed look. He ignored it, looking at her with a bright grin.
Before she could scold him further, the door swung open and out stepped an almost similar mirror reflection of his. The only thing that differed was that the other man had black hair, not blond.
"The hell's wrong with you?" Osamu glared at his brother. "Stop yelling in the middle of the street, ya fool!"
"Who're ya calling a fool, idiot?" Atsumu snapped back.
'Oh god, it's already begun,' Natsumi thought, resisting the urge to facepalm. As the twins argue, they enter the restaurant. Natsumi closed the door behind, knowing that the fighting pair wouldn't. The tables were empty and the chairs were pursued in everywhere, except for one.
Saori was sitting there, and when her eyes met Natsumi's, she smiled kindly and waved her over.
"Are they on again?" Saori asked. "They never stop, do they?"
"If the Miya twins stopped fighting, that would be a sure sign that the world has come to an end," Natsumi bluntly answered as she pulled a chair on the opposite side. Sitting down, she took off her leather jacket and hung it over the back of her chair.
"True true," Saori nodded. This was how they had bonded when they had met again. Secretly insulting the twins, while also loving them (for Natsumi, it was the love she felt as Atsumu's best friend). "We should stop them though, right?"
"We should, yeah," Natsumi answered. Taking a deep breath, she turned towards the twins and spoke in a loud voice. "Yoohoo, if you two want to keep fighting, Saori and I could always have dinner by ourselves."
"We're not fighting!" Atsumu and Osamu yell in unison. When they realize this, both glare at each other. But instead of arguing they storm up to the table, taking their respective places next to Saori and Natsumi.
"I'm sorry that yer dating him," Osamu said. "He's a pain."
"Oh shut up," Atsumu answered. "Yer a pain."
"Can we not start arguing at the table?" Saori pleaded, but there was a hint of steel in her voice. Osamu looked at her, lightness in his eyes.
"As ya say," And though they could not see it, Osamu squeezed Saori's hand.
This. This is what a true relationship looked like. Osamu truly loved Saori and Saori loved him back. The love was visible in the little actions and the little stares. Natsumi's heart twisted in her chest. This whole fake relationship...it was nothing compared to what something real could be.
Maybe Atsumu had realized the same thing. Natsumi felt his hand on her thigh. When she looked at him, to her shock, she realized they bore a similar expression. She placed her own hand on top of his and lightly squeezed it, giving him a reassuring smile, hoping it conveyed everything. Hoping it conveyed that she was all in and fully supportive of the fake relationship they had.
Anything for her best friend, right?
*
Natsumi and Saori were off. Somehow, in the middle of their double date, the two had decided they needed to go shopping together. It was an unexpected, completely spur of the moment plan, but they had gone off together and would be back in an hour. Leaving Atsumu alone with his twin.
"So," Osamu spoke, as he slowly glanced at Atsumu. "How'dya convince Natsumi-san to go out with ya?"
"Huh?!" Atsumu felt a tinge of irritation. "Why do ya think she would need convincing?"
"'Cause it's you, Tsumu." Osamu snickered, covering his mouth.
"Shut up, Samu!" Atsumu angrily replied. "I didn't need ta convince her of anything. She likes me, okay?!"
Liar. A deep, buried part of his brain suddenly spoke. You know what you did.
A pause.
Then Osamu remarked. "Yer hiding something."
Atsumu almost wanted to ask how he knew. But stopped, because he knew there was no point. His brother had always been able to sense when he was lying or hiding something. Atsumu put it down to some freaky twin telepathy. But really, it was simply this. The Miya Twins couldn't hide stuff from each other. Actually, scratch that. They didn't hide stuff from each other. Somehow, in the end, they always knew what was going on with the other.
'Freaking twin telepathy,' Atsumu thought with an annoyed look. But there would be no point to hide this from Osamu. And it would be better if he told him now, instead of later.
"I asked Natsumi to date me," Atsumu admitted, as though he was confessing his guilt to a crime. "Not actually date me though. Just pretend to. For a bit."
He expected Osamu to laugh. But his twin doesn't. Instead, he asked, "Why?"
Why? Atsumu truly didn't know the answer. Maybe the social media comments were getting to him. Maybe he was a little insecure about the fact that he'd not really had a serious relationship. Or maybe it was the fact that his brother and even prickly old Sakusa were in a relationship and he was single. Insecurities and emotions were being a part of him.
"I dunno," Atsumu answered.
"I won't say anything to ya," Osamu spoke, giving him a look. The I'm-sending-a-secret-message look they both knew very well. "But ya know what you're getting into. Ya both do. So don't come crawling to me when this thing fails."
"It won't. We have a plan," Atsumu answered. Not just a plan, a whole ass contract.
"Right. 'Cause if this plan of yers fails, then there's gonna be two broken hearts."
"Oi! Idiot Samu! That's not gonna happen."
"Yer the idiot! And I'm telling ya, it won't work!"
"Yes it will!"
"It won't!"
And once again, the Miya Twins could be found arguing.
what do you think osamu's secret message look was for?👀👀
writing about natsumi and atsumu together has made me realize how much i enjoy the 'oblivious idiots in love' trope. this can be pretty cute but i feel it can get pretty emotional too.
