Chapter 13: It's Almost Halloween
Maddie's POV
I woke up earlier than the boys which was no surprise. They could sleep through anything. I knew that I had lots of preparing to do if I was going to throw a Halloween extravagansa. I got up and quietly got ready. I decided that I would go get supplies on my own. I picked through what money I had and sighed. I needed a job. With some extra house guests I was going to need it. I hopped in my car and set out to town.
Since Halloween wasn't too far off, most of the stores were beginning to have decorations out. I drove into the local Walgreens. In the back they had a Halloween section that was bound to have something good. I wasn't disappointed at all. I collected some spiders, and cobwebs, along with some lights. I was hoping the boys would be willing to help me set up, but seeing their reactions yesterday was convincing enough.
I noticed a very bored looking guy slouching behind the check out counter. He must've been new because I'd never noticed him working before. I headed his direction with my arms full of things nearly dropping some spiders in the process. I dumped my load on the counter and smiled at the guy. "Check out please!" I said. The guy stood up to his full height which was extremely tall, at least he had a few good feet on me. I glanced at his crooked name tag and made out the letters. 'Dallon' it read.
"Lot of stuff you've got here. Party?" This Dallon raised an eyebrow at me as he began to lazily scan items.
"Well, hopefully. It's a work in progress." I grinned sheepishly.
"Must be huge seeing you have enough stuff to throw a party for a high school." He joked.
"Stop judging me! It's an elementary school anyway." I played along laughing. That caused a smirk on Dallon's face. I didn't think it'd be wise telling a stranger about my situation anyway.
"Well I don't know if you have enough stuff, but there's a cool skeleton hanging out right here on sale if you want him." He pointed at a pitiful thing with a red tag On it. It was ugly and missing a hand. It was perfect.
"Have a nice day!" I called as I left bags in hand. Dallon did a weird salute as the sliding doors closed. I hoped this thing wasn't real. I glared at the Skeleton. Oh well, a ghost would be interesting. I then dipped into the local HEB, and got paper plates, cups, and napkins. What were we going to eat? Hm, I figured some Halloween themed food would be cute and the guys might enjoy making them.
After my errand run I was back home struggling to open the door with all of the bags I had. I knocked in the end, and a tired Pete opened the door. "Oh hey Maddie, need some help?" He asked. I nodded gratefully and dumped half my load on him. Patrick came out to help me.
"Wow, this is awesome Maddie! You so did not have to do this for us." He told me.
"Aw come on, everyone deserves to enjoy a Halloween party once in their lives right?" I smiled. We dumped all of the stuff out on the table, the rest of the boys crowding around it ooing and aahing. Brendon came up behind me and put he arm around me.
"Well would ya look at that. You actually did it." He grinned.
"Not yet." I replied. "The fun part is about to begin! Set up."
"Hey Mikey, look." Gerard grabbed a fuzzy spider and began chasing his brother around with it. I motioned for Pete and Spencer.
"Pete, Spencer, you guys are the better out of you all at cooking so you can help plan some recipes for the party. I'm thinking Halloween planned dishes." They nodded in approval as Mikey ran screaming in the background, Gerard in pursuit. "Ray, Bob, and Gerard. I need you guys to stick some spiders in these cobwebs and hang them out front please." They got right to work. "Ryan and Frank, you guys have charge of the backyard." They gave each other mischievous grins and left. "That leaves Me, Patrick, and Brendon. We get to decorate the inside." I let out an evil laugh.
"Woah there little master of fright." Brendon laughed at me. "I'll take that as a compliment." I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Sounds Fun!" Patrick squeaked. In my head I was imagining an awesome montage of us doing our thing as Thriller played, everyone enjoying themselves.
"Check it out Maddie, hotdogs that you can make look like fingers!" Spencer showed me excitedly. I gave him a thumbs up as he and Pete stuck their noses back in their phone screen. I felt something brush my neck and turned around only to stare into the eyes of this freaky doll. I screamed and smacked it away. I heard laughter and saw Patrick snickering behind his hand. I glared at him and he tried to hide by laughing behind his Fedora.
"Hey, stop laughing at me! I have a very rashional fear of freaky posessed dolls!" I tried to be stern, but couldn't help but crack a smile. Patrick kept laughing.
"Ah man that was fun. Sorry, but I couldn't resist." He looked at the doll on the ground. Brendon walked up and kicked it with his foot.
"Ew. That things like what, a hundred years old?" He scrunched up his nose. "Why would you buy that thing?"
"Yeah, especially if you're deathly afraid or whatever." Patrick asked me. I looked at the discarded toy. Wait, did I buy that? "Uh, I don't remember buying that. I mean why would I? I don't even like dolls." I answered now officially creeped out. Brendon looked at Patrick, who looked at me. Our eyes grew wide.
"KILL IT!!" Brendon picked it up, screamed at it, then threw it at Patrick. "Don't give it to me!! It's your problem man!" He threw it back. They kept tossing it then it landed on me. "NO GET IT OFF, I THINK IT BLINKED!!" I threw it and it hit Ryan who walked in.
"EW, WHAT EVEN IS THIS!? I THINK IT'S DISEASED!" He tossed it and it landed on the counter in front of Pete and Spencer. Spencer shot away from it and fell on the ground. Pete stared at it before exclaiming, "There you are!" He grabbed the doll and smiled at it. He noticed the silence and realized we were all staring at him.
"What? I found it." Pete answered simply. Patrick groaned beside me. "Only you Pete." I sighed in relief as we watched Pete cuddling the doll.

The days on the calendar ticked by as Halloween approached. Until October 30th arrived. I smiled and ticked off the date. One day left. Together the Boys and I went out and picked out some pumpkins to carve.
"It'll ward off the vampires!" Frank said wiggling his fingers in a spooky fashion.
"Vampires will never hurt you my dear Frank." Gerard laughed holding him protectively. "I promise."
"Gross!" Spencer frowned as he scooped pumpkin guts into the trashcan. They made an unpleasant splat. Ryan was dancing beside him moving his carving knife with a flourish. "I'm carving pumpkins, it's almost Halloween..." He sang softly. His eyes lit up instantly.
"Brendon! We could write a Halloween song, just in time for the party!" He cried out. Brendon's eyebrows raised. "That's not a bad idea Ryan. But do you think we could finish before tomorrow night?"
Ryan scoffed. "Of course. Who do you take me for?" I smiled. "That's an awesome idea Ryan! Would you be performing it?"
"Of course! Me and Brendon, and Spencer too!" Ryan answered. Spencer gave him a look.
"Oh no, I'm not singing." He said eyes wide.
"Well, no. But you can play the drums! Or tambourine!" Ryan gave him a playful shove. Spencer smiled. "My true calling."
"Seems like a cool idea." Pete noted as he put the top back on his pumpkin. "Done!"
"Great. Now can we burn the doll?" I asked. Pete looked offended. "Uh no! What did it ever do to you?"
"I don't know, maybe it will kill me in my sleep?" I said rolling my eyes.
"Sounds like a you problem." Pete replied crossing his arms and turning his head. "Savage." Bob coughed behind me.
-------------------------------------------
"Happy Halloween!!!" I was woken up by an over hyper Brendon.
"Morning." I smiled at him. "Good to see you're in a good mood."
"Well of course! It's tonight! Me and Ryan have been working on a killer song all night. It's gonna be epic!" Brendon continued. He kissed me and practically skipped downstairs.
The kitchen was alive with all sorts of dishes as Pete and Spencer spat out plates left and right. There were hotdog fingers, brownie graveyards, bats made of pretzels, and skeleton shaped sandwiches. I was impressed.
I had laid out a table with props for a photo booth, there were plenty of sparkly Mardi Gras masks and cabaret styled ones laying out. The boys each took turns getting dressed into their costumes. I myself was going to be a vampire. Brendon insisted on matching me, so we were going to be a vampire couple.
Gerard, Ray, Frank, and Bob were going to be their characters from The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, Ryan was going to be a mummy, Spencer a werewolf, Pete an "edgy emo vampire", and Patrick some superhero villain. Night was falling and we had a bowl of candy at the door for trick or treaters. Our pumpkins sat glowing on the porch.
I handed everyone a mask for a group photo. Mikey began to cry.
"Hey, what's the matter Mikey?" I asked him.
"I-its just, no one's ever done something like this for us before. It's amazing." He told me sniffling. "Aw, its okay bud. I want to do this for you guys. Now let's have some fun." I gave him a hug and he smiled. I dimmed the lights and Ryan, Brendon, and Spencer get into place.
"We would like to Present: It's Almost Halloween. And original song by us!" Brendon grinned. The music began.
"I'm carving pumpkins, it's almost Halloween. All my friends are wandering, what they're gonna be. The Monster Mash is playing, you're moving to the beat. Now we're gonna teach ya to do the trick or treat...." Ryan began and Brendon took Over.
"Everybody scream, everybody scream, it's almost Halloween, do the trick or treat, do the trick or treat. Its almost Halloween, everybody scream!" I was blown away by how Amazing his voice was! Spencer was faithfully playing the tambourine as the three of them did a dance which I guessed was the "trick or treat". Soon we all joined in until the song ended.
"That was amazing!" I cried jumping into Brendon's arms. "How are you guys not a band? You wrote that all last night?" I asked in a rush. Brendon laughed and was blushing.
"It's sort of our thing. We would like to be a band some day." He told me. After that we all had a dance party, ate snacks and talked amongst ourselves. Brendon hung out with the guys and was enjoying himself. It was exactly what I had in mind.
Patrick's POV
This was one kickin party! Maddie went all out and I was loving it. Could she be any more Amazing? I felt that feeling inside of me whenever I thought about her. I wish I didn't feel like this. Brendon... I began to feel all awkward and decided I needed to chill in the bathroom.
"Pat!" I jumped as Brendon wrapped his arm around me. "Put on a cabaret mask! Everyone is."
"Over their costumes?" I asked nervously.
"Well yeah, makes things fun." Brendon laughed handing me one. I reluctantly took it and put it on. I watched him go to Maddie and they did the trick or treat together. I felt my face heat up as I went to the bathroom.
"Get it together Patrick! This is a party. Enjoy yourself." I told myself, splashing water on my face. I slid the cabaret mask on as I exited the bathroom and began to make my way to the stairs. It was really dark down here. Suddenly I felt someone grab my arm and pull me aside so my back was pinned against the wall. I thought it was Brendon again so I was about to say something, but I was beat to it.
"There you are! I thought I lost you for a minute Brendon." I recognized the voice as Maddie's. She thinks I'm Brendon! My mind thought. She probably couldn't tell because it was dark and we had the same masks on. "You've been with the guys all night, it's like I've barely seen you." She laughed. My she was pretty close.
"Oh, wait but I'm not-" I tried to say.
"Now we can make up for lost time." Before I knew what was happening, before I could stop it, her lips were against mine. We were kissing, and I was doing nothing to stop it. I practically melted. It was everything I never knew I wanted, I wanted the moment to last forever. She finally broke away, smiling at me with her pretty face. I wanted to say something, I had to, but before I could do anything we heard a call from downstairs.
"Maddie! What scary movie do you want to watch? How do feel about a bonfire?" It was Ray.
"Coming!" Maddie answered. She looked at me again. "We'll pick up where we left off later." And then she was gone. I stood there shocked before finally managing to stumble down the stairs. Only one thought was In my mind. Don't tell Brendon. You can't. Maddie was helping set up a bonfire when Brendon went over to greet her.
"Oh hey! You came pretty quick." She smiled. I was pretty quiet the rest of the night as we gathered around the flames watching Pete's doll burn.
"Best Halloween ever." Mikey smiled as he hugged his favorite pillow close.
