prologue
Rory was 6 months old when she entered her first beauty pageant. She didn't remember it, of course, but her mother still kept that first crown and that first sparkly dress in a special box in her wardrobe.
Ever since Aurora won that pageant, her mother was focused on making a star out of her. She started ballet classes at 2 years old, gymnastics at 3, ice skating at 4, violin at 5, and acting and singing at 6. While the other kids in Felicity Valley played at the park and had sleepovers, Rory was training to become the perfect blonde bombshell.
"Don't worry about them," her mother once told her as she stared at the other kids playing from the car. "You don't need friends like them. You only need friends that can help you become a star. Friends like me."
Still, in the most pathetic act of childhood rebellion in history, Aurora made a friend. Clover Copeland. Clo was everything Rory was not. Aurora had blonde hair and blue eyes while Clover had black hair and eyes that were such a deep brown, they almost matched their hair. Aurora was bubbly and outgoing and sensitive, while Clover barely spoke in class. Still, somehow, it worked. Maybe the whole "hey, we both have shitty parents" thing bonded the two. Maybe it was fate. Still, neither of them could remember a world where they didn't have each other.
Then, Iris Matthews was approached by a talent scout backstage at a pageant, who said that Aurora could go far in Hollywood.
The next thing Rory knew, she was packing up her things and hugging her childhood friends goodbye to pursue her mother's Hollywood Dream.
