Chapter Six
The next morning, Dawn found another vase of red roses. Then another when she returned home and another until she had vases littered all over the place. She knew exactly who they were from, but she gave no reaction to the increase in his gifts. She merely ignored them after the second day, the only thing that was hard to ignore was the permanent smell of roses. Some of the scent was starting to rub off onto her, when someone at the office asked for her rose perfume.
That was not the only gift she got. When she arrived at the office, there was a box of Swiss chocolate, and a dainty gold bracelet waiting for her in a gold gift bag. There was a note on the back of the Ace of Spades, 'Can I be the one to make a Deal this time?'. Dawn smiled at the note, she had made deals with him and given up her necklace and ring but here he was giving her a bracelet. She put the bracelet on instantly, glad that she had taken up his offer to go to lunch yesterday.
Her Majesty walked past and noticed the bracelet. "Lovely bracelet," she commented. She wanted to say something more but thought it would be better if Gold explained. She remembered the bracelet and knew exactly what it signified to Gold but it wasn't her problem to put her foot in and interfere with so she left Dawn in the dark. She just hoped that Dawn made the right decision and was glad she hadn't fired her yesterday.
Dawn worked hard at work, knowing that she was still on thin ice after that day she had been sent home. She had worked later than usual for a few days, except tonight, when she was supposed to meet Sin. She arrived home and spotted another fresh vase of roses. She checked her bedroom, almost expecting another dress but there was nothing. He would probably call soon, she doubted he had forget about their meeting, after all the effort he put in last week.
Just as she expected, her phone rang with an unknown number again. She answered it, waiting for him to speak. There was a brief silence.
"No hello for me, lucky lady?"
"Oh no, I was just wait for you to let out a stream of instructions." The reply might've seemed as a little docile but there were traces of sarcasm, which Sin noted.
"Mmm, well I will be picking you up a nine, so you'd better get something for dinner, but I'm not sure you stomach will be able to handle what I have planned..."
"No dress this time?" Dawn pushed.
"Nope, just wear jeans." He hung up. He wasn't happy with her but tonight she would remember her place. He couldn't have a pawn disrespecting the King.
Dawn had a light dinner, taking Sin's warning on board. She had no idea what he had planned but it sure wasn't a private dinner like last week. She picked out a plain t-shirt and a pair of old fade jeans, just in case she had to thrown them away. She tied her hair in a high ponytail. Maybe Sin had something bloody planned. She removed the bracelet she got from Gold, not wanting to accidentally ruin in. She could never be too careful with Sin.
She recounted her money and slipped the envelope into the waist of her jeans. The night was far too warm to wear a jacket and she didn't want to take a bag, wherever they were going. She left her place and went to wait for the car. She was early, it was only a matter of time before the car pulled.
The same driver stepped out the car and opened the door for Dawn to get in. Dawn slide into the car, and found Sin seated at the back. Sin was dressed casually, he had black jeans and a plain black t-shirt on, it made him seem younger and less intimidating than his suits. He wasn't looking at her. Instead he stared out into the night sky, with his arm hanging out the window, with a cigarette. The car started, Sin took one long drag of his cigarette before tossing it outside and closing the window.
He turned to acknowledge her presence. He took in her appearance, pleased that she had listened to him and worn jeans. She had been pushing him, ignoring him and challenging him. Her actions had displeased her but he wanted to keep that flame alive in her but she would learn who controlled her oxygen flow, and tonight would just remind her, who he was. He had changed his original plans to take her out for an glamorous opera show, when his men reported her lack of reaction to the roses. He should've sent her a severed hand instead, he thought amused. He moved closer to her. So far she had glanced in his direction once, before staring out the window.
"You smell divine, Lucky Lady," he whispered, referring to the rose aroma. She smelled like her, not the same but close enough. Dawn disliked the tobacco smell, wanting to push him away from her, but she wasn't stupid. He was unpredictable and she wanted to live another day.
"It must be all the roses you've sent. You really do like roses?"
"Yes, I do. There's something beautiful about them, but you can't get to close or else you'll end up pricked by the thorns," he replied but Dawn sensed he wasn't simply talking about just about roses, there was something more, though she didn't ask. Everyone was entitled to one dark chapter they never spoke about.
The car pulled up, outside another Warehouse. Just great, thought Dawn. She frowned, when Sin took her hand and walked towards a side door. The car drove off, leaving them both in this remote area. All every girl wanted, to be left alone in the middle of nowhere with a psychopath. No amount of good looks could make up for the fact he could strangle her at any time he wanted.
It turned out that they were not alone as Dawn thought. There was a large unruly crowd waiting below as Sin tugged her around the back of the noise. The place had acquired a bad odor of spilled beer and sweat. Dawn did not want to be in the middle of the crowd or tonight's entertainment. Sin took them to a platform, just above the stage which gave a clear view of everything. The chair was the only thing worth anything in this place. It was a spotless, high back, leather armchair. It reminded Dawn of the one she had seen when she first met Sin but this one was a different design. Sin sat down and pulled Dawn onto his lap. He placed one had on the arm rest and the other one on Dawn's thigh.
The place quieten down instantly.
Dawn shifted trying to get comfortable in this uncomfortable position. She could object, but where else could she sit? The dirty floor was out of the question and she found the many of the men gave her leer looks, which left the crowd as not an option. She would just have to stay here quietly. Sin nodded and a man started shouting. He called out two burly men, whom started fighting after the countdown. This was an underground fighting ring, which obviously belonged to Sin, and was most likely illegal.
Sin's hand trailed up the nape of Dawn's neck, towards her hair, before her removed her hair tie, tossing it into the crowd.
"I prefer you with your hair down," he murmured.
His hands didn't leave her hair and he played with her light hair. He paid no attention to the fight, and neither could Dawn, who concentrated on her breathing. She would have to wash her hair, she thought. She stared in the fights general direction, but was hoping it would soon be over, so she could get away from this man.
Eventually one of the men were knocked out and a winner was announced. The crowd was crazy, the winner flexing in celebration of his win. He even had the audacity to wink at Dawn. Dawn didn't react, looking straight through him, waiting to leave this joint.
The presenter continued to fuel the crowd with excitement. Dawned looked a Sin to see him staring down at her with a smirk.
"It's my turn now," he said close to her ear. She nodded, not quite understanding what he meant, but when he stood up, holding her. He pushed her back down on his chair. She caught on. He removed his shirt, showing his defined muscles, handing it to Dawn.
"Look after this, will you?"
She didn't have a chance to reply before he leaped off the platform and onto the stage. He wasn't as big as the other guy, but the other guy might be tired from the previous fight so Dawn wasn't sure how this was going to end. She watched as he confidently approached the stage. If she thought the crowd was crazy before, then she didn't know how to describe the excitement now.
"You see that lady on my throne?" The man nodded, "Well if you win this fight, you can have a little fun with her later one."
The man eagerly nodded at the thought of a night with that blonde beauty, he would win this fight for sure. This was a good bargain. Sin was happy with his eager reaction, nothing like a beautiful lady to distract a man in a fight, he thought. Dawn had no idea about the exchange that had happened as the crowd was too loud to make out the voices and Sin was facing away from her. The countdown began and so did the fight.
The man attacked Sin straight away, but he dodge the punches. He continued to lunge for him but he evaded all his moves easily, toying with his opponent. The man was arrogant, if he could defeat Sin, he could take the throne from him and that pretty little lady, waiting for him. His clouded judgement would be his downfall.
Sin waited patiently, before he started his attack, giving this pitiful man and chance to strike. So far he had used the exact same moves as all his previous fights, but just in a different order. He solely relied on attacking and that was going to be his downfall. Dawn watched at the edge of seat as the guy slowly tired out after each of his move.
Everyone felt the shift in performance. Sin stopped playing around with prey and started attacking, knowing exactly which spots to go for to cause maximum damage. He enjoyed the pain he bought his prey, knowing he would only be happy once blood was spilled. Punch after punch, the man's defense was easily broken but Sin didn't stop. Sin shifted his attention from the man to Dawn and held eye contact as he beat the man down. His shots increased with power and the crowd quieted down. The man called to end the fight, tapping out but no one made a move to end it. Sin was obviously the victor but something else was happening.
This was no longer a fight but rather an execution. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Dawn flinched at the sound of his ribs breaking. The man coughed out blood, staggering bad, but Sin didn't stop. Sin's lips lifted, pleased at the sight of Dawn flinching. She could taste the blood on the tip of her tongue, her fingers curled tightly on his shirt. He only broke eye contact to say something to man who was crouched, coughing blood.
"You should know better than to steal from me," he said. It was loud enough for a everyone close enough to hear the warning. He knew the news would spread like wildfire and people's fear would increase. He made one final blow, breaking the man's neck.
Dawn looked away, using her hair to shield her face. She had just witness Sin murder a man with his bare hands. She decided to try and concentrate on her breathing instead. The message was clear, Sin was reminding her of his dark nature, last week had been a facade. This man was a monster and not someone she wanted to be involved with, no matter how beautiful he was on the outside. She reminded herself why she was here and cursed her father, who lay in his grave.
Sin stalked his way back to his throne, feeling satisfied with the outcome. Dawn would never forget that he was the king of this domain, and he could always remind her if she forgot.
"The money," he demanded, once he was close enough to her. Dawn removed an envelope from her waistband with shake hands. She was paler than usual and it was all his doing. Sin snatched the envelope and tossed it to the presenter, who was also the manager of this place.
"Get that mess cleaned up," he instructed. If Dawn had given the right amount, then his clean up crew would come asking for more. The manager nodded and told everyone to clear out as the show was over now.
Dawn finally got control of herself properly and handed Sin's shirt back to him. She didn't want to look at him but at the same time, she didn't feel safe enough to look away. She then stood up, "If there is nothing else, I would like to go now."
Sin smiled at her, "Well then, let's go."
The crowd parted as the left the warehouse. The car was already waiting for them when they got outside. Dawn got in as the driver held the door opened, Sin following her in behind. Dawn's eyes followed his movement wearily. He would never be ignored again, thought Sin.
Sin moved next to her, and lifted her chin with his bruised and bloody hand to make eye contact with him. He used his thumb to stroke her lower lip. "Let this be a lesson for her both, we are still learning but you've managed to pass another challenge."
He held her in this position until they arrived outside her place. Sin leaned down and kissed her cheek, catching the corner of her lips. Dawn was just grateful she didn't flinch and show him more fear than she had already. Intimidation was a very important part of his game but after next week she would be a pawn to his game anymore.
"After next week, you'll have everything you ever wanted." He released her from his hold and watched her walk away from him for the last time. He tapped the roof and the driver drove off. Tonight had gone perfectly for his plan, soon she would cross the board and be whatever he wanted her to be. However, there was something that caused his smile to slip off his face.
Those blue eyes were all wrong, he thought.
