Chapter Eight

Dawn struggled to open the door with one hand. She had a large bouquet of mixed flowers from Gold, which she currently had in one arm. The money and flowers had been delivered to her desk during the day and a lot of people had noticed. Curious, gossip mongers had the guts to ask who it was from but Dawn simply smiled, not letting anyone know. It was none of their business anyway. That didn't stop the rumours, as someone had seen Gold stop at Dawn's desk previously, and many speculated at Dawn's sudden dating life. She was glad she hadn't bothered with them before, because it seemed like they were all snakes anyway.

On the flowers, there was another card; the queen of diamonds. On the back, there was a similar handwritten message to the previous one; 'Lunch tomorrow? x'. Dawn happily accepted his offer and sent him a quick message to let him know. This started a long strung conversation of flirtatious remarks and soft banter. Dawn smiled the whole time at work and throughout all the errands she ran. It was noticeable to the point that Her Majesty said, "I didn't know dropping off my dirty washing to the dry cleaners made you so happy, Dawn."

Dawn had to laugh at that and just hinted at an admirer, which Her Majesty gave a knowing smile in return. She had heard about Dawn's sudden love life, when one of her employees decided to tell her, in an attempt to suck up and throw dirt on Dawn's reputation. Her version included seduction in the supply closet the other day, which humoured Her Majesty because she knew exactly what happened in her office that day. Her Majesty would be visiting Gold soon, to get him back for all the teasing he had done to her over the years. It was time to return the favour. At least this time she didn't have to send it in an empty box. She didn't bother booking a meeting.

As soon as Dawn closed the door, she could feel something wasn't right. She slowly put down the flowers, on the floor. The hair's on the back of her neck stood up and the shadows were the same. Something was waiting for her. She switched on the light and found the disturbance.

Sin.

In the dark, Sin sat, brooding. He had waited for a while for Dawn, knowing what time she would be back. He had got someone to lay out dinner, moving around some of her tacky furniture. He bought his own table in, and waited. He wasn't happy about Dawn meeting this other guy, and tonight, he would let her know. This game was nearly over.

Dawn frowned at the rearranged furniture. She didn't like the fact he had moved everything around. It had taken her ages to move everything to the way she wanted when she first moved in, and he had undone her hard work, just like that. He better put everything back to normal once he left. Dawn picked up the flowers and put them in her bedroom. Sin's eyes followed the flowers but no words were exchanged. Sin's appearance was so sudden that she had no chance to mentally prepare herself. She spent a few minutes in the bathroom, trying to think of a strategy. She had to find out why he was here and then toss him out her life. She took the brown envelope of money and went to join him at the table. Just as she was about to sit down, there was a knock at her door.

Sin didn't bother looking up from his phone, "Come in," he said loud enough for them to hear. Dawn watched as one of his men, opened her door, with a key, and brought takeaway bags. She understood now, how they got so easily, in and out, without leaving any marks of a break in.

Dawn sat down. The guy started taking everything out the bags and serving them the food. It looked like he was their waiter for the evening but Dawn needed him gone. There was no way she would be able to get answers from Sin with him looming over them. Once he set down the first course, Dawn dismissed him him, "We can take care of it from here."

The man looked at Sin for confirmation. Sin nodded, smiling at the who exchange. He knew he made the right decision. She was someone he could control, whilst she controlled everyone else. It was going to be a perfect exchange only a few moves of this dear pawn before she was trapped. The man left them alone quickly.

"Now you have me all alone, what do you plan to do with me?" He smirked, hinting at something dirty. Dawn was not impressed. She didn't want anything to do with him and hated how his hands felt on her skin. She had taken many long hot showers, since she had met him, to scrub the idea of him off her skin.

"Why are you here?" she asked, ignoring his previous hints. There was no point in playing games, or beating around the bush. She might never get this chance again. It was now or never because the money was just there. She was going to be debt free again.

"I just wanted to spend time with my lucky lady." He reached for hand, which she snatched back. He was trying to leave a trail of honey but she had already seen the poison. She had decided long ago she wasn't attracted to him, despite his devilish looks. She had seen enough of his darkness to know that she didn't want to be tangled with him. It would be the sort of darkness that corrupt the soul, slowly but surely, until there was nothing left but his tainted mark. She felt sorry for the women he would end up with.

"Lovely lie, want to try the truth this time." Dawn wasn't sure how long this bravery would last, but she hoped it lasted long enough for her to get answers. She was sure some of it came from the fact if she did go missing, that there would be someone who would look for her. Even if it was to repay another debt. Her survival was still on her, but she had something, or rather someone to fall back on. The food was left untouched, as they were too busy concentrating on each other.

"The truth might just be too much for you to...swallow," he replied, avoiding the question. He tried something different this time, using another sexual innuendo. He was trying to control the atmosphere and shape it to his will but Dawn wasn't playing along this time. He was in her place, on her territory and would go by her rules.

Dawn's chair scraped the floor as she got up. She tossed the envelope at Sin, "This is obviously not working, so there you go. You can leave my life now."

Sin ignored her as something else caught his attention. He didn't even feel the envelope hit him as he stared at her wrist. A gold dainty bracelet. It couldn't be. No, he wouldn't. They can't. She was supposed to be his.

"Where did you get that?"

It was the tone in his voice that made Dawn think twice before answering him. There was a deadly undertone in it that made her cautious. Dawn found Sin staring intently at her bracelet. What was it with these men and jewelry?

"It was a gift," Dawn replied honestly. Short replies meant less was given anyway. She didn't need to drag Gold into this mess. What she didn't know was that he had long been apart of everything.

He didn't need to ask from whom. He knew exactly who it was from and he would deal with him later for now. He had to deal with what was right in front of him now. First, clean up the mess here and then create chaos there. The time for toying was over.

"Now Dawn, I think it's time I tell you the truth," he said, stalking around the table. Dawn followed his steps moving away from him. She had noticed his sudden change in body language. That faux relaxation was gone and in it's place, the predator had arisen. She was just waiting for him to lunge and grab her.

"Well, then you can tell me from where you are." He faltered in his movement but Dawn didn't let her guard down, just yet. She knew she was currently being preyed on and she wasn't going to be easily caught. She remembered him in that fight. He was always ready to go in for the kill.

"Let me ask you a few questions too, because information always comes at a price and I think the other prices might be too hard for you," he said. Dawn nodded, agreeing to his terms. She was going to be careful on her wording, but she was sure she would be able to survive his interrogation. If she played this game correctly, Sin would be out of her life for good and her curiosity would be satisfied.

"You can go first," he prompted.

"Why are you here?" she asked, once again.

"To end the game," he replied. Dawn opened to reply but remembered it was his turn to ask so she nodded instead. Sin moved to stand behind a chair and Dawn mirror his movement, maintaining the current distance. At least now there were two chairs and a table between them.

"Have you been seeing another man?" he asked calmly. Sin held up his facade, trying not to let Dawn know what was going on in his head.

"Yes." Dawn watched as Sin's grip tightened on the chair. It was the only sign of his displeasure.

"How long has this been going on?" he asked again.

"You seem to have forgotten that it's my turn," She falsely scolded him, "What is your end game?"

"I don't know how well you know how to play chess, but just know I wanted to turn a pawn into a Queen and it looks like I'm succeeding." Dawn hummed in response. She only knew how to play basic chess but she from what she understood, a pawn needed to cross the board in order to become another piece and in this case Sin wanted a Queen but she wasn't entirely sure.

"How did you get the money?" he asked. He had a feeling where she got it and he should've questioned it earlier.

All reports of her going to his office had been reported as work related but it soon became apparent that his men were either incompetent or there was another rat. That would be another problem to add to this growing list. He hadn't expected the evening to turn out this way. He was supposed to dine and wine her until she fell into his arms. It seemed that his lucky lady was really lucky after all.

"I sold things." She knew better than to specify in case he tried to buy her. She wouldn't put it past him to do such a thing.

"Was my father's debt as important to you as you made it out to be when we first met?" It was obvious that the money hadn't made a dent in his pocket and he was playing a different game. Something she didn't want to be apart of. It became apparent to her when she thought about all her meetings.

She should've suspected things when they had dinner together but she had been too busy thinking about her next move for surviving. He didn't want her dead but he wanted her to fear him. He had many chances to kill her and hadn't. She was the pawn, it all clicked. He wanted a queen but she didn't want to be his. She would just be a powerful piece for him to showcase and move around. That was not the sort of life she had wanted to lead. She had left her father when he had thought of something similar. She would find an escape, she always did.

"No. Will you stop seeing this man?" Sin needed to know how strong his hold was on her. He hadn't bothered looking too deep into matters when they were first reported but he should've. It turned out that this guy wasn't some random fool off the street but someone who he would have to face off. He couldn't send a few guys to rough him up and warn him way. This was Gold in the mix of chaos and the outcomes were not always good.

"No."

Dawn didn't tell him about the deal. It was just another debt that he might buy from Gold to have her under his control. Everyone had a price and she was sure that Sin could afford Gold's price. His pockets did run very deep and Sin had already gone through all this trouble to get her in his hands.

Sin could no longer hold all his anger in. He threw a glass at the wall. Dawn let out a shriek at his sudden movement. He couldn't believe this deception. He knew exactly what was going to happen. The game wasn't over yet. He wouldn't lose again.

"You're supposed to be mine and you will be!" he shouted. Dawn shook her head in disagreement, making sure to stay away from him. She didn't want to belong to him. That was a life she wouldn't be able to survive and she was a survivor.

"Get out!" she repeatedly screamed back at him. He wasn't seeing red just yet, but he ha to blow off steam. There was no use in being here with here. She wasn't going to be any use to him right now. Sin grabbed the envelope of money and left but not without promising, "This isn't the end lucky lady."

He was going to test her luck and see to it that she was back under his control but first he needed to make a few arrangements. He called someone to return Dawn's place to it's original state, there was no point in leaving her with even more of a sour taste, and then called someone to watch Gold. He never thought he would have to do this but he had crossed the line and he was going to pay.

Dawn stared at the mess. She had eventually managed to calm down enough and just concentrate on her breathing. The room was definitely a reflection of her life currently. She didn't know what to do. A heavy burden of Sin's debt had been lifted but his dark promise had left shivers down her spine. She didn't want to see him again but that wasn't in her hands. She just hoped her luck would change and that this whole mess would be over.

There was only a few moves left before the game was over.
