As we pull up outside the club, I sigh. Of all the places I've avoided in my time, I've been forced into two of them in the last two days.
"Aw," Hank says. "Feels like somebody's playing with a drill inside my skull." He looks up at the building. "You sure this is the place?" Connor nods.
"It's the address in the report," he replies. We climb out of the car, and I scowl at the gorgeous building in front of us.
"Right," Hanks says. "Okay. Let's get going." He sighs. "Jesus." He looks at the motto, printed on the wall. "Sexiest androids in town. Now I know why you insisted on coming here! Oh, boy..." I roll my eyes.
"I still don't see why I couldn't drive," I say. Hank looks back at me.
"Because you're still a criminal," he says. I sigh.
"That may be, but you can't accuse me of being a bad driver." We make our way into the building, and I stop and stare at an android at the end of the hall. She looks familiar. My eyes widen as I realize where I know this model from.
"Connor! Arna!" Hank calls. "The fuck are you doin'?" I look over at him, then back at Connor. I hadn't even realized he had stopped as well and was looking at the android. I frown.
"Coming, Lieutenant," Connor says. I walk away, still in awe of the memory of a certain android I haven't thought about in years. I only met her once, but her personality was pretty memorable. I follow Connor and Hank as they make their way to Ben, who's talking to the club manager.
"You're not gonna take my license, are you?" the manager asks. I roll my eyes. "I mean, ha, I had nothing to do with this!"
"The investigation's ongoing, sir," Ben says. "I can't tell you anything for the moment." He looks up as we walk over. "Hey, Hank!"
"Hey, Ben," Hank says. "How's it goin'?" Ben points to a room that says 'Occupied.'
"It's that room there," he goes to walk away but turns back to us. "Oh, uh, by the way...Gavin's in there too." I roll my eyes.
"Oh, great!" I say. "A dead body and an asshole." Ben looks at Hank, lifting an eyebrow, but Hank just shrugs.
"Is she wrong?" he asks. Ben shrugs and walks away as we walk into the room. Reed looks up as we walk in.
"Lieutenant Anderson, the delinquent, and their plastic pet," he says. "The fuck are you three doin' here?"
"We've been assigned all cases involving androids," Connor says professionally. I probably would've just punched him in the nose.
"Oh, yeah?" Reed asks. He looks back at the body on the bed. "Well, you're wasting your time. Just some pervert who, uh, got more action than he could handle." He chuckles, somehow amused by his own disgusting joke. Hank steps forward.
"We'll have a look anyway," he says. "If you don't mind." Reed glances back at Chris but nods.
"Come on, let's go," he says. He pauses as he walks past Hank. "It's uh...starting to stink of booze in here." He walks out, hitting Connor with his shoulder as he does. I start to go after him, but Connor grabs my arm, shaking his head. Chris sighs as he walks past us. Much nicer about it than Reed, might I add.
"Night, Lieutenant," he says. Hank nods to him, then turns back to the room. Connor walks over to the body, and I follow. He kneels to analyze the body. I just look for clues. I note the bruising surrounding the man's neck.
"He didn't die of a heart attack," Connor says. I shake my head.
"No, he was strangled." I look back at Hank as he nods.
"Yeah, I saw the bruising on the neck," he says. "Doesn't prove anything though. Could've been rough play." I sigh but nod.
"I hate the fact that that's actually a possibility," I say. He shrugs, and Connor and I stand up.
"We're missing something here," Connor says. He walks over to the android against the wall, Hank and I just behind him.
"Think you can read the android's memory?" Hank asks. "Maybe you can see what happened." Connor kneels down and looks it over.
"I can try." He touches the thirium on the android's face, putting his fingers to his tongue. I smirk.
"Whoa! Hey! Hey! Hey!" Hank exclaims. "Argh, Connor, you're so disgusting. Think I'm gonna puke again." I chuckle.
"No, that's the alcohol," I say. He looks at me.
"Maybe that's just making it worse," he says. "You seem fine." I shrug.
"Disgusting isn't exactly what I was thinking." He nods and looks away but looks back as he realizes what I meant. Before he can say anything, Connor speaks up.
"The only way to access its memory is to reactivate it," he says. Hank looks at him as he places his hand on the android's stomach, making her exoskeleton open up to reveal her biocomponents.
"Think you can do it?" I ask.
"It's badly damaged." He looks back at us. "If I can, it'll only be for a minute, maybe less." He looks at the android. "I just hope it's long enough to learn something." He reconnects to wires, and the android jumps to life, quickly moving away from us. Connor holds up his hand to show that he isn't going to hurt her. "You were damaged and I reactivated you. Everything is alright." She glances over at the body.
"Is he..." She trails off before looking back at Connor. "Is he dead?"
"Tell me what happened." She looks at the floor.
"He started...hitting me...again...and again." She looks up at us. "I begged him to stop, but he wouldn't."
"Were you alone in the room? Was there anyone else with you?" She shakes her head.
"He wanted to play with two girls. That's what he said, there were two of us."
"What model was the other android? Did it look like you?" She goes to answer, but she shuts down before she can. Connor stands and looks at us.
"So, there was another android," Hank says. "This happened over an hour ago, it's probably long gone." I shake my head.
"No," I say. "It couldn't go outside dressed like that unnoticed." Connor looks at me.
"It might still be here," he says. I nod. Hank sighs.
"Think you could find a deviant among all the other androids in this place?" Connor sighs.
"Deviants aren't easily detected." I grit my teeth. Understatement of the century.
"Ah, shit," Hank mutters. I sigh.
"There's gotta be some other way," I look up at Connor. "Maybe an eyewitness? Somebody who saw it leaving the room?" He nods.
"I'm gonna go ask the manager a few questions about what he saw," Hank says. "You two let me know if you think of anything." We nod, and he walks away. We leave the room, and I look around, trying to think of where the deviant could be. After a minute, Connor walks up to me.
"Arna," he says. "I think I may have an idea." I nod and follow him to a tube containing a female Traci. "Can you rent this Traci? I want to probe its memory." My eyes are wide, and I shake my head quickly.
"Woah, man," I say. "I don't swing that way." He sighs.
"Please, Arna. It has to be rented by a human." I sigh.
"I-I'm a thief," I say. "It wouldn't take money from me because I-I don't really have any." He sighs. "Try asking Hank." He nods and walks over, returning with the Lieutenant.
"Can you rent this Traci?" Hank looks at him incredulously.
"For fuck's sake, Connor," he says. "We got better things to do." Connor sighs.
"Please, Lieutenant!" he says. "Just trust me." Hank sighs and holds his hand up to scan it.
"Hello," the machine says. "A thirty minute session costs $29.99. Please confirm your purchase." I chuckle.
"Dollar a minute," I say. Hank looks between us, sighing.
"This is not gonna look good on my expense account." He confirms the purchase.
"Purchase confirmed," it tells him. "Eden Club wishes you a pleasant experience."
"Yeah, you're welcome." The tube opens, and the Traci steps out.
"Delighted to meet you," she says silkily. "Follow me, I'll take you to your room." Hank looks at Connor desperately.
"Ok, now what?" he asks. Connor grabs the Traci's arm. "Holy shit, Connor. What the hell are you doin'?" Connor pulls away, his eyes wide.
"It saw something," he says.
"What are you talkin' about?" Hank asks. "Saw what?"
"The deviant leave the room," he says. "A blue-haired Traci. Club policy is to wipe the androids' memory every two hours. We only have a few minutes if we wanna find another witness!" I nod and follow them as Connor probes the memory of other androids, finally probing a custodian android and looking at a staff door.
"I know where it went!" he says. "Follow me!"
"Fucking-A," Hank mutters. "This is crazy." We approach the door at the end of the hall, and Hank holds out an arm, taking out his gun. "Wait! I'll take it from here." I nod and pull out my own pistol, holding it in front of me. He opens the door and steps into the room, walking slowly down the stairs as I look around at the androids just standing there, unused. "Shit. We're too late." I lower my gun as I walk around, looking around the room sadly. "Christ, look at them. They get used till they break, then they get tossed out." I look down at his words, but then I notice a splatter of blue blood on the floor, almost unnoticeable. I kneel down to look at it, then look over at Connor, who's examining the android on the table.
"Connor!" I call. He looks at me, and I nod for him to come over. He kneels down beside me and once again touches the small drop of thirium, licking it off of his finger. He looks up.
"It's the deviant," he says. We stand and start looking for a trail to follow.
"People are fucking insane," Hank says as he looks around. "They don't want relationships anymore, everybody just gets an android." Connor walks over to a large marking of RA9 on the wall, but I continue following the blue blood. "They cook what you want, they screw when you want, you don't have to worry about how they feel." I grit my teeth. "Next thing you know, we're gonna be extinct, because everybody would rather buy a piece of plastic than love another human being. Beats me." I walk over to a group of androids in the corner and see the blue haired Traci standing in the back. I'm about to say something when another Traci, this one with short brown hair, shoves me backwards, running me into the pole behind me.
"Don't move!" Hank yells, pulling out his gun. He is attacked by the blue haired Traci, and Connor runs to help him, leaving me to deal with this one. I grab her by the shoulder and try to run her into the support beam, but she stops her movement by placing a foot against the metal. She kicks herself away, and I spin around and shove her into a crate, making her fall backwards over it. She falls to the floor as I jump over the box, but as my feet hit the ground, she kicks them out from underneath me. She gets on top of me and tries to punch me, but I catch her fist every time.
I push her to the side, and she grabs a screwdriver off the ground beside me. She swipes at me with it, but I lean backward in time to avoid it. She brings both hands up and tries to stab me with the tool, but I grab her wrist and hold it away from my face. I push her off of me, and she stands up smoothly, swiping at me again. I gasp as the screwdriver cuts my stomach but recover quickly enough to move out of the way of her arm as she tries to stab me again. I catch her in a chokehold, and she rears her head back, hitting me in the nose and making me release her. She turns around and tries to stab me, but I hit her hand out of the way, making her drop the screwdriver. I back up and notice Hank and Connor still fighting the other Traci. As this one comes towards me, I grab one of the shelves on either side of me and pull it down in front of her. She catches it and pushes it away, so I grab a cart and push it forward. She stops it with her foot, and for a moment we are both pushing, not wanting to give up, before she finally manages to push it away.
She grabs a tablet off the table and swings it at me but quickly drops it as I back into a metal hook hanging from the ceiling. I grab it and kick a stool at her. She's disoriented for a moment, so I grab her and shove her through the curtains. She gets out of my grip and tries to hit me but is distracted momentarily by the other Traci pushing Hank into a table as Connor runs towards us. He runs towards her and shoves her outside and over the edge of the loading ramp, taking advantage of her distraction. They hit the ground, Connor groaning from the impact. The blue haired Traci pushes Hank off the table and runs outside to the other two androids. I run after them, quickly zipping up my vest as I do, in time to see the blue haired Traci helping the other up. I freeze when I notice their hands intertwined. Hank grabs one of their arms, and they shove him backward, knocking the gun out of his hand. They run toward the end of the alley, aiming for the fence.
"Quick!" Hank yells. "They're getting away!" I come back to reality, running after them as Connor stands up and does the same. We reach them at the same time, pulling them down. The brown haired one shoves me into a wall and grabs a metal pipe as the blue haired one grabs Connor, keeping him in place. Traci 1 hits him in the face with the pipe as Traci 2 lets him go, and he stumbles backward before running at Traci 1 and pushing her into the wall. They turn the tables and pull him back before pinning him against the wall as well. He tries to push them away, and the brown haired Traci grabs his hair and rams his head into the brick. He shoves her away and falls into the other Traci. They both hit the ground, and he goes to punch her, but the brown haired one hits him over the head with a trash can. He falls backward as I run at the Traci, tackling her. We roll on the ground, and she ends up on top of me. She punches me in the face, and I groan as she stands up. Connor gets ahold of Hank's gun and points it at her, but he doesn't shoot. She kicks him in the face, making him fall to the ground a few feet away from me. He slowly stands up as the blue haired Traci steps forward, and I look up from my place on the ground.
"When that man broke the other Traci," she says, "I knew I was next. I was so scared. I begged him to stop, but he wouldn't...and so I put my hands around his throat, and I squeezed...until he stopped moving." She shakes her head. "I didn't mean to kill him. I just wanted to stay alive...get back to the one I love." The other Traci walks up and takes her hand, making the blue haired one look over at her, then back at Connor. "I wanted her to hold me in her arms again...make me forget about the humans...their smell of sweat and their dirty words."
"Come on," the brown haired Traci says, making the other look at her. "Let's go." They take one last glance back at us before climbing the fence and running off. Connor walks over and helps me off the ground, frowning when I wince. I glance up at him before looking after the Traci's, my mind racing.
"It's probably better this way," Hank says. I keep staring off until I hear him say, "Arna." I look back at him, noting that Connor is looking after the Traci's as well. Hank frowns. "You alright?" I gulp and nod.
"Just...tired," I say. He nods, clearly not believing it, but says nothing. I look down at the snow, feeling Connor's eyes on me. I don't look at him. I can't.
