Chapter Two
Kaida laughed at the joke Draco just told her. They were currently flying above the trees which waved slightly as they glided. Soon, they came to a clearing where Draco landed. "We must walk from here,'' Draco told her. Kaida nodded and slipped off of Draco's back. Draco led her into the trees, which got increasingly darker and Draco seemed to be more nervous. There was a snap in the forest, coming from the left of the duo. Kaida instantly understood why Draco was so nervous.
"Is there someone following us?" Kaida asked nervously. Draco only nodded his giant head. He sniffed the air, and then relaxed.
"It is just an elk", Draco said. It was after that that a elk appeared through the trees. Kaida was entranced by its beautiful antlers that seemed to stretch up like trees. She didn't notice anything else until she heard Draco growl. She looked away from the deer to see a hunter several feet behind the deer, a bow notched with an arrow in hand.
She instantly turned to the elk, which had moved closer to her, a nervous curiosity in its eyes at the young human girl. Kaida suspected that it had not yet seen or smelled Draco. "Run", she whispered. "Run as fast as you can. There is a hunter nearby."
The elk instantly leapt into the bushes, the sound of its hooves galloping fading into the distance. Kaida watched, not noticing that the hunter was now storming over to her.
"Hey!" a new voice entered the fray. "What was that about?! If I don't get enough meat for the Queen, I'll lose my head!" Kaida jumped, startled at the loud noise. She saw a particular angry face, but that didn't hold her attention for long. Instead she was distracted by the mop of eggplant colored hair. It was such an unusual color, and Kaida couldn't help but wonder if he was a constellation. She returned her attention to the hunter's face, and took note of his amethyst colored eyes. Kaida was amazed by how much depth such a light purple could hold.
"Orion", Draco said, catching the hunter's attention. "You would do well not to harm Kaida."
"Kaida? As in... the one..."
"Yes", Draco rumbled.
"What are you guys-" Kaida was cut off by high pitched barking. Kaida looked around wide eyed at the forest, scared of what might come out. However, when it was only a small black and purple dog, she was shocked. She thought it was going to be some sort of large wolf.
The hunter known as Orion grinned. "Hey Canis Minor! I was wondering where you had gotten off to! Where's your mother?"
Orion knelt down and started petting the small dog. Even with the colors, Kaida recognized that it was golden retriever pup. She watched cautiously, and was about to start walking over to the dog and the hunter, but instantly pressed herself against Draco's leg when a larger dog jumped over the bushes. Kaida guessed that the dog's back maybe came up to her hip, and that made her nervous. She never did like too big of dogs. She tried to hide herself behind Draco, but was unable to when Draco moved.
"Do not worry, Kaida. Canis Major and Canis Minor are not like the Ursas. They are very friendly, much like the dogs in your world," Draco told Kaida.
"I'm... not a fan of dogs... Kind of. I don't really know," Kaida mumbled. Draco chuckled and gently moved her closer to the dogs.
Canis Major instantly started sniffing around, and barked happily when she found Kaida. The dog licked the girl's hand, making her laugh happily. She was happy to play with the dogs for a few hours, but unfortunately, that was all the time Orion and the dogs had before he had to get going. Orion had explained earlier that the dogs were his hunting companions.
"It was wonderful meeting you, Miss Kaida," Orion smiled. "Perhaps we shall meet again?"
"Perhaps, Mr. Hunter," Kaida replied. "Stay safe. Don't let the queen cut off your head. I rather enjoyed spending time with you and the Canises."
A small whine from her feet brought her attention to Canis Minor. She knelt and hugged the small puppy.
"Don't worry, Minor. I'll always remember you. You're my favorite puppy in the whole world."
A happy bark came from the puppy's mother, and Kaida knew she had made a few friends.
"Until we meet again, my friends. Perhaps I will be put in the sky when I die so I may join you in this world once more. Well, if I ever get to leave," Kaida spoke.
"I have no doubt that you will meet him again, Kaida," Draco said. "But for now, we need to rest, so you may prepared for the future..."
Kaida nodded and walked over to Draco. "See you later, Orion, Canis Major, and Canis Minor."
After the goodbyes, Kaida continued to walk alongside Draco. She had a question formulating in her mind, and Draco could sense it, because he spoke before her.
"You have a question, young Kaida," he murmured.
"Yeah," Kaida said, slightly surprised. "How could you tell I had a question?"
"I could see it in your eyes," Draco murmured.
"Oh. I'm just confused about one thing. All I have to do is say my name and everyone seems to know who I am just by that," Kaida said. "I don't understand why."
Draco sighed. "I was hoping you would not ask that. It is a long story, one that should not be said out in where there may be others listening. When we get to the mountain, I will tell you."
Kaida hesitated before speaking. "Alright... I suppose I can wait patiently."
Draco smiled before stopping once more. "We must fly from here." Kaida sighed, before climbing onto the back of the tall dragon. She grasped the spine in front of her carefully, making sure to hold on tightly, but without hurting Draco.
In an instant, Kaida felt her stomach leaving her behind on the ground. She grew nervous, even though this was the second time she had been in the air. Even still, she was just as nervous as she was last time.
As Draco leveled out, she found that she had squeezed her eyes shut. Hesitantly, she opened them, and was amazed at the view she had. The sun was setting in the distance, giving off this golden sheen to the clouds. It was gorgeous, and Kaida's mouth dropped open.
"Wow," she murmured. "I have never seen a sunset like this before. It's incredible."
Draco chuckled. "We get sunsets like these all the time. It all depends on where and when the sun sets for the different colors. Perhaps in your time here, you shall see the different sunsets."
Kaida smiled, though it quickly disappeared. "How long do you think I will be here?"
Draco hesitated. "I do not know."
Kaida sighed softly. "I... I really want to go home. I mean, I've enjoyed being here- wherever here is- with you, even though it's only been one day, but... my family will be worried about me."
Draco huffed softly. "I promise I will get you home safely, Kaida. Or rather, I will do everything in my abilities to get you home."
Everything went silent as Kaida pondered the two questions that had been on her mind for the past few minutes. She couldn't find any answers, but she trusted Draco would help her get home.
After several moments, Kaida felt her eyes slipping shut. Her grip on the spine in front of her loosened as she drifted. Draco shifted a bit to bump her so she would wake up. Kaida tried to look through the darkness, but saw nothing.
"Are we almost there?" she mumbled, her eyes drooping again.
"Yes, young Kaida. We are almost there", Draco responded. Kaida tried to stay awake, but she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer, and she fell backward, laying on Draco's back. Draco chuckled softly.
"Sleep well, my dear Kaida."
