Chapter Four
Kaida moaned softly, before sitting up and looking around her surroundings. She was lying on the furs she had been laying on earlier, and her eyes widened as she remembered what had happened. She tried to call out Draco's name but her voice was scratchy. She looked around fearfully, and tried to get up, only to feel a wave of dizziness. Kaida fell back to the ground, scraping her back against the floor. She groaned softly, and closed her eyes, before shivering slightly. Her head felt like it was on fire, and it was moving slowly now that her initial wake up was over with. She looked over to the cave entrance and saw a figure standing there. Her eyes widened as she feared that Cassiopeia had found her, but that fear was diminished once she realized that the form was too big to be a human queen. She smiled as a voice growled into the cave. It was Draco.
"Kaida, are you awake?" Draco asked. Kaida nodded, before wondering if Draco could see her. She decided to respond verbally, just in case he couldn't
"Yes," she said, though her voice was hoarse, and she broke into a coughing fit. She lifted her hand to cover her mouth, only to freak out when she felt warm stickiness on it. When she pulled her hand away, she couldn't see what was on it, and she feared the worse.
Thankfully, when Draco came into the cave, he had brought in some wood and quickly started a fire. It was then that she could see what was on her hands. Her fears were correct. Her hand was covered with blood that she had coughed up.
"We must get you to Ophiuchus,'' Draco muttered, noticing the blood on her hand. He pulled a small rag out of his pocket, and wiped it off, before tossing the rag into the fire. "I forgot that humans have a more delicate immune system when I got those berries for you."
"What berries did you get me?" Kaida whispered, her voice even hoarser than before.
"Humans call them pokeweed berries,'' Draco said. "I didn't realize that they were poisonous to humans until after you passed out."
Kaida tried to stand, but she only fell backward toward the ground, but didn't hit it due to Draco catching her with his large paw. She groaned, and Draco shifted her so he could rest her head against the soft pad of his paw. He brought her close to his chest, and hobbled out of the cave on three paws. He leaped off the ledge, and was instantly flying south, the opposite direction of the queen's palace.
Kaida groaned softly as the air rushed past her quickly, and she tried to focus on something other than her pounding head, and her grumbling stomach. She closed her eyes, which made her head feel slightly better, but not enough to make her easily pass out. She wished she was asleep but she knew she wouldn't be able to nap with the pain she felt in her stomach and head. She wouldn't be able to sleep with the pain that was slowly spreading.
"Kaida, you must stay with me!" Draco yelled as Kaida's breathing started to slow. Kaida jolted softly, and her soft umber eyes met Draco's charoite ones. Draco smiled softly, though he kept a steady pace as he flew through the air.
"You have really pretty eyes," Kaida couldn't help but say. Draco's smile widened slightly before he started slowing down, and letting himself drop slowly through the air until his feet gently touched the ground in front of a small brick house. He had barely tapped on the door with his large claw when it opened, and a tall man took Kaida inside. Draco was quick to transform into his human form and followed them inside. The man was taller than Draco, and Draco was already really tall.
The man placed the human girl on a table set up in the middle of the room. Draco looked around the room, and frowned softly. The room was small for Draco, and he had no idea how the larger man lived in such small quarters. Draco stopped looking around the room when he noticed that her breathing had slowed until it was almost imperceptible. Draco gently shook her, trying to get her to wake up, but her eyes refused to open. Draco grew more frantic as he realized that she had passed out, probably sometime around when he had started his descent from the air.
"Move, dragon!" the tall man thundered as he shouldered Draco out of the way. The man poured something down Kaida's throat, and then waited for a few moments. Draco grew impatient in those moments, and just about started to yell at the man when Kaida began to cough softly.
"Get a bucket," the man ordered, turning Kaida onto her side. "She needs to purge her insides of the poison."
Draco instantly grabbed a nearby bucket, and held it near Kaida's mouth. He waited. And waited. And waited.
And nothing happened.
And then everything happened.
A loud rapping on the door.
Kaida started throwing up, purple berries mixed in with stomach bile.
Angry yelling coming from outside.
Draco grew scared, because he couldn't turn into his dragon form until he was outside. The man who was helping them ignored the door, and waited for Kaida to finish emptying the contents of her stomach. Once she had, he waited for her to open her eyes again, which she did after a moment or two. She groaned softly, and started to sit up, but the man gently pushed her down to rest.
"Get her some water from the spring while I deal with my nosy neighbors,'' the man said. Draco nodded, and set the bucket of puke on the floor before going over to a spring that was along the back wall of the house. Draco guessed that Ophiuchus had built the house over top of it. He found a small cup, and carefully filled it with water. Draco walked back over to the table, and set it on the edge, before helping Kaida sit up so she could drink the water.
Draco looked at the tired eyes of Kaida as she gently sipped at the water. He smiled softly at her, and she smiled back before gently punching his shoulder with the hand that wasn't holding the cup of water.
"Next time, don't feed me poison berries,'' she growled, though a playful twinkle was in her eyes. Draco chuckled quietly as he rubbed the spot where she had punched him.
"I won't," he promised. "As long as you promise to double check that they aren't poisonous."
Kaida smiled, and nodded, before going back to sipping at her water. The man came back, and nodded at Kaida's actions.
"Good. You already know to only drink sips of water after throwing up. We don't want it to create a negative reaction," he said. Kaida nods, before speaking.
"Humans throws up every once in a while,'' she said. "Besides, it feels weird to drink a lot of water after throwing up."
The man smiled softly, before turning to Draco. "She needs to rest for another twenty-four hours. Nothing strenuous that could possibly cause her to react negatively with the medicine," the man said. Draco nodded.
"Does that mean flying is out of the question?" he asked, a small twinkle in his eyes, hoping that the answer would allow him to still be able to take her on flights.
"She can still fly, but no fast descents or lifts, and absolutely no tricks," the man ordered strictly. Draco nodded. Kaida continued to sip at her water until she finished it off. She gently set it on the table by her leg, and yawned.
"Draco, can we go home?" she murmured sleepily, her brain fogging up. Draco's best guess was that there was something in the spring water, though he wasn't entirely sure about that.
"Do you mean the cave?" Draco asked, a frown settling onto his face. Kaida nodded, fighting to keep her eyes open. Draco smiled, before gently picking her up. He turned to look at the man, and spoke softly, as to not keep his tired human friend awake.
"Thank you, Ophiuchus," Draco said, his voice low. Ophiuchus only nodded, and opened the door for Draco to get out. Draco stepped out, and almost flinched at the sound of the door slamming behind him. He looked down at the sleeping form that was pressed against him, and he couldn't help but smile. He looked up at the sky, and gently started to flap his wings, which slowly lifted him. Draco was used to launching himself from the mountain or getting a running start before rising into the air, not to mention that he wasn't used to flying in his human form, so it took more effort on his part. Taking a deep breath, he started flying slowly back towards the mountain that held his cave.
After several minutes, Draco landed on the edge. He walked inside, and saw that the fire had died down. He gently laid her down on the furs that he had collected, smiling softly, before moving towards the entrance of the cave so he wouldn't hurt Kaida accidentally when he transformed.
Once he was transformed, he went to the wood that had burned down and blew fire at it, watching as it sparked to life. He smiled softly, before curling around Kaida, watching the fire as he slowly fell asleep.
