Chapter 4
I woke up with a grin, which is weird since I'm not a morning person. It was Friday and I've been waiting 2 weeks for this day. Tonight on the Report, they would be announcing the selected girls. I leaped out of my bed and put on my favorite leather boots and ripped jeans. My shirt was short sleeve and purple. I ran out the door and placed myself at the kitchen table. My dad always stays home on Fridays, unless he is on set filming.
"Hey dad," I said walking into the kitchen.
"Hi my little monster." That's what he has called ever since I was two because I am always competitive and sassy.
"Hi daddy!" I ran over and hugged him as he flipped a chocolate chip pancake. He kissed the top of my head. "Where's mom?"
"Taking Fi to another audition," he answered.
"Oh." I sat at the table with my silverware while my dad brought over my pancake. The chocolate chips always reminded of my freckles on my face.
I snarfed down my pancake and put the plate in the dish washer. My hair whipped back and forth as I walked since it was in a high ponytail. "Gotta go dad." I left as he waved.
I was heading to meet my friend, Raquel. She and Grace were pretty much my only friends, because the other castes think I'm snobby and the other Twos think I'm weird since I don't dress really nice. Raquel was a Three like Grace and they were the only people who understood me. I spotted Raquel under the tree where we always meet at in the park near our old elementary school. Her tan skin glistened and so did her hair which was very light brown. I sped towards her and jumped into her arms. "Hey!"
"What up?" She asked.
"Nothing much, just needed something to do to get myself out of my house while I wait for tonight." I grinned.
"Ha, yeah same. Did you see anyone that looked like they would win on line?" I haven't seen her in a while so we needed to catch up.
"There were two really nice girls in front of me and they were beautiful!" I remembered the picture of Riley and Olivia in my head. I actually met them again after the photo. I saw them at the park when I was bringing Fiona and they were bringing their little brother, Richard.
"Yeah, well I saw Annabelle." We rolled our eyes at the same time. I still wasn't talking to her since the fight, I was waiting for tonight to see what would happen. "Are you guys talking to each other again?"
"No, not much. I don't really talk to her any way, so it wouldn't matter." I replied.
"Yeah well it would be nice if you were."
"Yeah, but it doesn't matter."
"What if one of you is selected?"
"You mean what if she gets selected?" I was trying to make it clear that there was no chance of me getting selected.
"Stop!" Raquel yelled.
"What?" I screamed back.
"If you keep acting this way, I'm not going to talk to you!"
"Fine, I don't care!" I scurried away, running away from her.
My house was quite empty as I entered, which was weird since Kyle should've been here. "Dad, where's Kyle?" I asked him. He was sitting on the couch in the T.V. room, he was holding the newspaper and his glasses rested on the tip of his nose. He would look up every so often to look at the T.V.
He then stared up at me. "I don't know, but your sister is pretty worried. She is out looking for him." I then got a bit jumpy. Even though I wasn't close with Kyle, I was worried about him.
I ran out the door and grabbed my jacket that I had just hung up. The first place that came to mind was his office. I rushed to City Hall where he may be, as I ran, I thought of Annabelle. She would never do this if I had a boyfriend that went missing, I thought. Then I crashed into someone else.
"Annabelle, are you okay?" I bung into her as I was daydreaming and running. She was on the floor and looked pretty dizzy on the ground.
"Yeah, what are you doing here?" She questioned, sitting up.
"I don't know, just going for a jog," I lied. I didn't want her to find out I was doing something for her.
"In that outfit? You always change into your sports clothes if you go for a jog." She was suspicious.
"I was looking for Kyle on my jog." I admitted.
"Why?"
"Because he's important to you and you're my sister." She ran to hug me and I let her.
"I love you! And I'm sorry for everything that I said, I just said that so mom wouldn't get mad at me." She confessed. It all came together. "Let's go home now and get ready for tonight!"
"What about Kyle?"
"Oh, I called him a couple minutes ago and he said he had to babysit his neighbors' kids."
I nodded. "I can't wait until tonight."
"Yeah, I really am happy I'll be seeing your face on the screen." This time it didn't challenged her.

I sat in my pajamas with the rest of my family, patiently waiting for the Selection part of the Report to begin. Calvin Wood kept blabbering on and on about the country when all I wanted to know was the 35 girls that might have a chance to be the country's queen.
"Okay folks, it's come to that time f the night to announce the 35 selected girls. You ready?"
"Yes!" I screamed by accident. Everyone looked at me, my brother and sisters laughed while my mom scowled. My dad I could tell was trying to hold a chuckle.
I turned back to the screen. "Brenna Roberts of Kent, Seven." On the screen appeared the picture of the girl, her form and Prince Aidan's reaction. It surprised me that he chose a Seven, but she did look amazing. Her dark brown hair and coffee eyes went well with her slightly tanned skin. I noticed her talents were sewing and knitting. Calvin would make a few comments after every girl. I counted how many girls there were. 12 have gone by and none from Sumner. "Talia Parker from Clermont, Three." A picture of the 13th girl appeared. She was also my cousin. Her hair was dark brown and she had brown eyes. She had tan skin that looked light in some spots. Freckles laid across her cheeks and nose. Then the 14th girl, "Cassidy Green of Sumner, Two." Everyone in the room gasped. I couldn't believe it. Then I heard Calvin's comment, "can do the worm? Well, Cassidy when you come to the palace we'll have to see." I smirked.
"Cassidy!" Fiona hopped into my lap and squeased me so right that I couldn't breathe. I stared back at the screen as my sister was nearly killing me. Aidan looked as if he had a real smile on his face. He seemed to have made fake ones for some girls.
"Sis, come give me a hug." Annabelle stood and opened her arms. I rushed to them after placing Fiona on the couch. That's when Annabelle also almost killed me. Scott didn't speak but he gave me a hug.
"I'm so proud of you!" My dad threw me up into the air.
Then I went to my mom, who was almost crying. "I've been such a bad mother." I pulled her into my chest I was about two inches taller than her. "You are so beautiful and mature and I've never seen that. I never got to see one of your basketball or soccer games and I especially didn't get to see you grow up, to be a fantastic, young lady."
"I love you!" I said hugging my mom.
"You may have made mistakes, but you're still my mom."
"Well these are my last few days to be your mom since you are going to go to the palace and win!" She exclaimed.
"Calm down," I laughed. "We'll see once I get there." I relaxed her by sitting her down and letting her watch the rest of the Report. I saw the last few girls go by and I could tell I had some stiff competition.
