Chapter 2
The next morning, I waited for everyone to leave for work so I didn't have to face anyone. I was embarrassed from the actions that I chose to make the night before and didn't want someone to make any sort of remark.
The house was empty and kind of creepy when you were the only one in it, but at least it was light out and no one would bother me, hopefully.I grabbed a bowl from the cupboard and place it on the island in the middle of my kitchen. The clank sound vibrated the granite slab and filled the house with a buzz. Then a new sound rang. The jingle of my dog's collar. "Hey Rupert!" I knelt to the floor and patted my dog. He is the laziest Bloodhound you will ever meet. His ears drag across the floor as he scurries back toward Scott's room where he lives.
I took out the milk and spoon, but when it came on deciding what cereal to eat, I had a problem choosing. I finally dumped Cocoa Stones in my bowl. I chomped away, realizing that I should hurry to the market for the food for this week so I could spend the rest of my day preparing for my picture.
I pranced to my room after eating cereal and brushing my teeth to get my jean jacket. The outfit I chose to wear was laid back so I didn't need to fix myself up again for the photo. The red tank top I wore flowed as I ran around making sure I had everything. I put on black combat boots with black leggings since it was fall and quite chilly out.
The market was only 2 blocks away from my house which was convenient since I had to go there every Saturday when I was little and still do.
I began grabbing everything my family wrote down on the shopping list. I saw that my dad and Scott didn't need anything since their handwriting wasn't on the list. Mom wanted most of the average food that she would use for our meals this week, while Fiona wanted junk. I knew to get her everything she wanted because last time I didn't get her chips, she screamed and my mom and dad sided with her.
At the corner of my eye, I saw a glimpse of dark-golden blonde hair. The curls were held together with hairspray or else her hair would get really frizzy. I snuck up behind her and smacked my shopping cart into her's. She jumped at the impact. "Hey! Next time watch where you're going and..." She stopped mid-sentence as she saw my face.
"And what?" I asked teasingly.
"Cass!" She squeezed me, giving me a big hug. When he pulled back she glared at me. "Why would you do that? You gave me a bit of a fright!"
I laughed. "Sorry Grace, I saw the chance and took it." I loved teasing her. Grace was one of my best friends and also Scott's girlfriend. Grace is a Three and I would think my mom would care, but she doesn't since she knows that wouldn't bring down Scott's rank and also she was once a Three before she married my dad.
"So why aren't you getting ready for the Selection picture?" Grace interrogated. "You're doing it, right?"
"Of course I am, but chores first." I made a fake smile. She knew how my life was since I text her all the time. She always helps me with my problems.
"Are you signing up?"
"Of course not!" Grace shrieked. "I have my own prince!"
"Who?" I asked. I knew she would take it seriously and start ranting on and on.
"Scott, silly!" She smirked. "I have David in the car so I need to check out before he gets bored." I waved goodbye.
I quickly grabbed all the items on the list and purchased them. I rushed home and stumbled upon big, clompy shoes. That's when I knew Kyle was here. Kyle was Annabelle's secret boyfriend. The only person that doesn't know about their relationship is mom. Kyle is a Four so mom would not except Annabelle blowing off being a Two and choose being a Four, well if they ever got married. Kyle comes over the house whenever he has time off and mom has work. Most of the time they just are in Annabelle's room making out.
I slammed the front door shut so they knew someone was home. I heard shushes then Annabelle came out of her room. "Cass!" Annabelle put her hand to her heart. "Thank God it's just you." I smiled.
"Hey." Then Kyle came out of Annabelle's room. I saw that his belt was being buckled. "Hi Kyle!"
"Hello Cassidy! How are you doing today?" He asked genuinely.
I smirked. "Good!" Kyle has kind if dark, red hair that is wavy. His skin is pale, but not as pale as I am. He is pretty good looking, but the reason why him and my sister are dating is because they fell in love, literally. Kyle caught Annabelle once when she fell off the runway. He was there practicing how to be a project manager.
"I think it's time for you to leave, sweetie," Annabelle commented. Kyle turned to her giving one long, last kiss. "Love you!"
"Love ya!" He whipped on his shoes and headed out the back door as he always did, waving bye to me on the way out.
Once he closed the door, I turned to Annabelle and looked her up and down. "What?"
"I'm just thinking of what would happen if you got selected." I said.
"I won't." She answered. For some reason she sounded confident with herself.
"Umm... Yeah, how are you sure?" I questioned. "You're so pretty, tan, have perfect hair, a model, the list can go on and on." I told her.
"I won't be chosen if someone else from Sumner is selected." She said.
"Yeah well, you can definitely be that girl!" I didn't get how she was sure she wouldn't be chosen.
"Not if you are chosen." She raised her eyebrows like that was her idea. I raised my eyebrows in shock. My sister thought I would of all girls in Sumner would be selected.
"Yeah keep dreaming sweetie because that ain't happening!" I replied.
"Why wouldn't you?" She yelled. "You're funny, sassy, nice, and cute." She added at the end.
"Yeah well he doesn't know that!"
"He will soon, once he picks you. And I'll make sure he does." Annabelle grinned.
"How?"
"Take a shower! I'm going I make you over!" My jaw dropped. She pushed me towards to the bathroom as I couldn't believe I was going to have make up on.
* * *
"Ow!" I shrieked. "Easy! I'm fragile!" Annabelle got dressed and applied make up to herself as I was in my shower. That's how long my showers are. She was now plucking my eyebrows which felt like I was being bitten by 5 sharks in the same spot.
"Okay..." Annabelle started. "And... Done!" She spun my chair around to the mirror, where I saw myself but a bit... prettier. "You like it?"
"I don't like it." I said. Annabelle stared at me like I just told her I threw out her blankie. "I love it!" Her frown turned upside down as she squealed with excitement.
"Now. What dress are you wearing?" Annabelle flipped through the hangers of my closet.
"Dress?"
"Yeah." She turned towards me. "Do you even have one in here?"
"Well no. We don't go to many events. Unless it's your fashion shows which I wear a skirt. All my dresses I've out grown." I said. It was pretty sad that I was a Two and didn't own a dress.
"You're going to have to borrow one of mine. We're about the same height."Annabelle ran out of my room and came back in two seconds with 5 dresses. "Which ones do you like?" I looked at all of them and they were all gorgeous. "If you don't like these I have plenty more in my closet."
"Can I see?"
"Of course!" She grabbed my hand and we hurried into her room. The bed was unmade which was unusual, but I went along with it. "Here they all are!" Her whole closet was filled with dresses of all colors and shades.
"Woah!" I gasped at the variety of choices. That's when I saw an aqua blue dress. I took it out and looked at it for awhile. "It's perfect!" I tried it on in the bathroom and walked into my room to see myself in a bigger mirror. I never saw myself like that. The dress went to my mid-thigh and it puffed out. The top looked like it was strapless when really it was clear and went over my shoulders with jewels. That second, I felt like the princess of Illea and at the same time, I felt as if I was actually going I be chosen to be in the Selection.
As I checked myself, Annabelle walked into my room. "Wow!" She giggled. "My little sister is all grown up."
"I'm not that much littler you. I've been the same height as you since I was 8 and you were 10." I snapped.
"Hey, I was trying to say you look beautiful." Annabelle summarized.
"Oh," I said, not expecting that. "Than thank you. And not just for the compliment, but for everything you have done for me."
"Wowza!" Fiona said as she trespassed into my room. "Cass, why do you look so hot?" We all started dying laughing. That's when my mom walked in and we all stopped. I noticed that Annabelle stood up a little bit straighter.
"You look magnificent Cassidy." She said very poised.
"Thank you mother." I replied.
"Annabelle, may I talk to you outside?" She asked. Annabelle nodded and left the room, closing the door behind her.
"Wanna eavesdrop?" Fiona said.
"I thought you would never ask!" We smiled and put our ears to the door. "Do you hear anything?"
"Not really." Fiona whispered. "Wait they are talking now."
We listened as my mom and Annabelle had their conversation. "Annabelle what are you doing not dressed?"
Then the voice changed to my sister speaking. "I have my makeup done and I decided to help Cass." She responded.
"Why are you helping her win? Don't you wanna be the queen one day?"
"Yeah, but as you said it's not liked she will be picked, so wouldn't it be nice for her to have the chance to feel pretty and get he chance to enter?"
I was shocked at what my sister just said. She didn't think I was going to win, when she was just the person who was motivating me to stay in the competition. I had no choice but to bust through the door and tell her why I was feeling. "What? You don't think I will be chosen. How dare I let you do all this to me!" Before she could answer or think about about how she would answer, I slammed the door to my room and I noticed that Fiona was still there with me. "Sorry Fi."
"It's ok." She said. I sat on my bed in silence. Fiona galloped over to sit next to me. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For how they treat you."
"It's not your fault."
"I know, but I think Prince Aidan will select you."
"Everyone is saying that and everyone that has, lied."
"Am I a liar?" I stared at her. "Okay, well you can trust me this time." I smirked. I hoped my sister's prediction was correct or else I was in deep trouble.
