Chapter 3: A Dragon's Loss
I zoned out in class. I couldn't stop thinking about my parent after the events in Dr. Oobleck's class. My father who taught me to fight. My mother who could kill an Ursa bare handed then walk inside and make the best rabbit stew I'd ever tasted. One day there was a knock at the door, then red sprayed everywhere, dad fell to the floor. My mother grabbed me and ran through the forest, being shot at and chased. Then she told me to be quiet and stay in the cave we took shelter in. I did as she said, but she never came back. I went to my house to see it burned down and my father's body just lying there, and next to him, my mother. I dug them both graves in the Emerald Forest under the oak tree we'd often picnic under. I was so deep in thought I didn't even hear the bell ring, or notice that Team RWBY was trying to get my attention.
Weiss: "Alexander!"
I jumped and looked around.
Me: "What?!"
Weiss: "The bell rang. Classes are over."
Me: "Oh. Must have zoned out."
I felt tears fall down my face. RWBY looked at me shocked. I quickly wiped them away and headed out the door. I went straight to my room. That didn't help though I kept thinking and thinking about my parents. Everything reminded me of them, even my weapon was a family heirloom. The jagged rust-like blade and the wrapped handle with a spiked pommel. My father gave it to me when I turned eight. And said "One day when we're gone, you'll need to fight to live, it is obvious we cannot live hidden forever. But one day, race will no longer matter, and weapons will no longer be turned towards each other, only towards the Grimm." He was right. I had to fight to live, but he was wrong about race not mattering, it will always matter no matter how peaceful we are, humans fear what they cannot explain and shun what is different. I decided that I'd go pick up some flowers, then go to their graves, I haven't visited since I joined Beacon. As I went to the door I heard voices.
Yang: "Just knock."
Weiss: "What if he doesn't want to be bothered?"
Blake: "Then we leave."
Ruby: "But he looked so sad, and he doesn't have a team so I feel like we-"
I opened the door.
Me: "I'm fine. In fact I was just leaving."
I shut the door and walked past them.
Ruby: "Soooo, where you going?"
Me: "A place."
Ruby: "Could we come along?"
Me: "No."
Ruby: "Awwwww... Why not?"
Me: "Because it's personal."
I then realized I forgot the Dragoor Blade. I turned around and walked back in my room grabbed my blade and turned to see they were still following me.
Me: "What do you guys want?"
Ruby: "We want to make sure you're okay... I mean you seem sad."
Me: "I'm fine."
I walked past them and headed down to the ship dock. Once I got down there I got on my red with black tinted motorcycle and sped off. Once I picked up my mother and father's favorite flowers, red chrysanthemums I headed to the Emerald Forest. Once I got there I parked my bike outside the forest and walked in. Knowing the way by heart I got there with little trouble from Grimm. I got to the big oak tree. I planted dragon's tongue around the two grave stones I had made for them. I carved their names into a stone slab with the same saying all dragons were given if they got a proper burial. "Noster ignis eorum non morietur," or "Our flames shall not die." I placed the flowers on both grave stones.
Me: "Requiesce in pace."
I then laid in between the two graves.
Me: "Hey mom. Hey dad. I'm sorry for not visiting sooner, I've had my hands full with school and all. I'm training to be a hunter. I know that's not an excuse though."
I started to tear up.
Me: "I want you guys to know I miss you a lot."
I chuckled weakly.
Me: "I also miss your rabbit stew mom. I'd give anything to taste it again. And dad I wish I could hear that same story of how you met mom you've told me probably three thousand times. Heck, I could probably tell the whole story myself."
I paused.
Me: "Dad... Do you still think there's hope? About equality I mean. I know you'd be so disappointed in me. I remember the lecture you always gave me. 'We are a proud family, and we will not waver in the face off discrimination. You should be proud of your heritage.' Ha... Things seem to have gotten worse dad, but I'm hanging in the-"
Suddenly a tree branch snapped and I heard a loud thud. I wiped my tears away and readied my blade.
Ruby: "Wait! It's just us!"
I froze. Team RWBY came out of the tree line and approached me.
Me: "How much did you hear?"
Ruby: "Only... All of it."
I fell to my knees.
Me: "Why...? Why did you have to follow me?"
Yang: "We were worried."
Blake: "Does this mean you're a...?"
I slowly nodded and took off my beanie revealing my horns, then took off my gloves revealing my claws, and finally my trench coat revealing my wings and then untucking my long forked tail.
Me: "I guess you guys are gonna tell everyone..."
I looked at them with tears in my eyes. But I saw no hostility or fear. I only saw worry and concern. Blake kneeled down to me and put a hand on my shoulder then took off her bow revealing black cat ears.
Blake: "It's okay. You can trust them and me."
Ruby then walked up to me and kneeled down.
Ruby: "I know how it feels. Well not the faunas thing... But I know how it feels to lose someone you love. My mother..."
Me: "I'm sorry to hear that, and my condolences for your loss."
Weiss was silent for the entire time we spoke until I stood up and turned to the graves.
Weiss: "Alexander."
Blake: "If you intend to say anything other then something nice I suggest you not say it."
Weiss: "Alexander, you shouldn't hide who you are."
Me: "Ms. Schnee, you do not understand, I am afraid. I am the last one, if I die that's it, my race is extinct. The Reliqua Draconis' message failed. I reveal myself and I'm sure it will simply happen again and I will be hunted then killed and not even given a grave."
Yang: "But your parents were dug graves, right?"
Me: "Yes. Because I was the one to dig them."
All of their mouths hung open.
Weiss: "Alexander things are different now."
Ruby: "Yeah! And if anyone comes after you they'll have to deal with Team RWBY!"
Yang: "Yeah they will!"
I chuckled a bit.
Me: "So if I simply reveal myself. You'll see me no differently?"
Blake: "They didn't see me any differently, well except Ice Queen over there."
Weiss: "Hey!"
I sighed.
Me: "Alright. Maybe things are different... I'll do it."
They smiled and brought me into a group hug.
