Hey everyone and welcome back to another chapter in my Godzilla Discussion Page. In this chapter we're going to go ahead and talk about Shin Godzilla! The first Godzilla movie that Toho made since Final Wars.

This is the first time that Toho did a straight up reboot of Godzilla and this movie definitely takes the series in a unique direction. But, I still really enjoyed it. I'd put it in my top 10 favorites easily.

Plot: Godzilla shows up for the first time ever in this movie's universe only this time he's very different from before. Unlike previous films in the series we actually get to watch Godzilla evolve from different forms throughout the movie. His first form is just a tail..

but then he shows up on land in his second form and well take a look..

What in the hell is that!? I remember the first time i saw this in the theater and couldn't believe what i was looking at. I knew he eventually would evolve into his main form but whenever I look at this thing I start to laugh at it. I mean it's pretty funny to look at. After this you see him evolve into his 3rd form.

Then we start to see him evolve more into the Godzilla we know and love until he reaches his main (4th form) in the movie.

Overall, I like the new design. It's definitely an eerie looking one. However, i think that his arms are too short and his tail is a little too long. But, overall i like the new look.

Now, as far as Godzilla gets es he's amazing in this movie. You can't take your eyes off him when he's on screen. This movie has some of the best Godzilla sequences in movie history.

But the best scene of all is when he first uses the atomic breath. Watching that scene in the theater was truly epic and haunting. I absolutely love the look of the purple atomic breath. Its truly breathtaking to look at.

However, that's not all we get. We also get to see some new abilities of Godzilla. He can now fire out his back.

The first time I saw this I was in shock. However, I do kind of have a few mixed feelings on this. On the one hand this is Awesome. But, on the other it kind of diminishes the significance of his atomic breath. But, I guess I am ok with it because of how cool it looks.

However, not only is Godzilla able to fire out his mouth and back he is able to fire out of his tail.

I don't know about you but it does seem a little excessive to me. But, I commend them for trying something new with it.

Ending/Mysteries
After the government divises a plan to stop Godzilla by basically freezing him we get a final shot of the movie that shows Godzilla's tail and we see all these weird humanoid things coming out of it. What does it all mean!?

There have been a lot of theories going around about this ending. In my eyes I see it as Godzilla evolving to become the dominant species on earth. Which in this case is mankind. But, nobody knows for sure. There are a lot of fan theories going around out there.

Problems:
While I love the Godzilla scenes and think they are cool this movie does have some problems. For one thing the characters are really flat. There is nothing interesting about them and for the most part they stay safely away from Godzilla and aren't ever in any real sense of peril. Not that it matters to me because I could care less if they lived or died. Another problem I have is with the talking. There's so much discussing and board room scenes going on in this movie and it takes so long for anyone to do anything. Look, I get it. This is supposed to be commentary on the response time of the Japanese government. But, unless you know that going in than you will just be going like "why aren't they doing anything." The original Gojira from 1954 had social commentary but they at least made the rest of the movie interesting. They knew that they wanted to have the commentary but they also knew that they had to make the movie engaging in these scenes in order to drive home the message. Usually, when I watch this movie I usually try to skip to the Godzilla scenes because the humans make it difficult to sit through. Thankfully Godzilla is there to give me a jolt of excitement.

Overall, I really dig Shin Godzilla. I know this movie can be divisive for some fans with how they change up the character and give him new abilities but since this is movie 31 I'm ok with them taking some risks. Yeah the human stuff is boring as hell but the Godzilla scenes are unforgettable. Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno really gives this a unique take on the character that i feel should be admired by doing things I've never seen in a Godzilla Movie. One thing I also like about this movie is that it's a Toho movie that lists both of Godzilla's names in the same movie. His original Japanese name Gojira and Godzilla. I thought that was pretty cool. As a Godzilla fan I left the theater really satisfied with this one and I'm really looking forward to what Toho has planed next if they decide to do a Shin Godzilla sequel. This movie opens the door for so many possibilities that I can't wait to see what they do next. Anyways, those are my thoughts on Shin Godzilla.
