Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) Discussion
Hey guys here I am again back to do another discussion on a Godzilla movie. This time I'm going to talk about one of the best in the Showa series. Mothra vs Godzilla also known as Godzilla vs Mothra or Godzilla vs the thing....
The Thing????? Really????? Is this the thing they're referring to...
Is Kurt Russell supposed to show up?? Because that would be awesome! But, anyways I'm getting off track. I'm not sure why they called it Godzilla vs the thing as Mothra already has some name recognition in the USA based on her own movie.
Anyways this movie was once again directed by Ishiro Honda with Akira Ifukube doing the music again and of course it's excellent as always. Have a listen....

What's most special about this movie is that it's the first time Toho made a crossover with one of its own films. Mothra originally made her debut in Mothra (1961).
[Its a pretty good and classic Kaiju flick so check it out, I love the lore surrounding the character along with the twin fairies who sing to her].
Anyways the plot of this one goes like this. The twin fairies (played by the japanese vocal group the peanuts) are back from Mothra (1961) in this one and they are trying to get Mothra's egg returned to their island before it hatches and causes trouble. Keep in mind Japan has seen the damage that Mothra can do so you'd think they'd be like "yeah keep this egg away from us." But, no they didn't and instead the egg is purchased by two rich assholes named Kumayama and Torahata.
These two make great human villains. Both of them are so greedy and corrupt but a ton of fun to watch. But, they're also really stupid to. In the scene where they first meet the twin fairies they immediately try to capture them. Are they unaware of the problems that occurred the last time a rich greedy asshole captured the fairies!? (The character of Nelson in Mothra 1961 for those of you who don't know). Mothra went out and caused a whole bunch of trouble across Japan. Costing billions and property damage and killing a lot of people....
I understand wanting a lot of money but cmon be smart about it. In the end though both characters get what's coming to them and it's great.

Ok now that I got that out of the way let's talk about Godzilla in this movie. Well as always he is amazing. This design is one of the best in the Showa series (arguably the best). It's just terrific. Those eyes are something you just don't forget....
We really get a feel for just how indestructible Godzilla is in this movie. The military just throws so much shit at him and he keeps getting back up like it's nothing. There's a great scene where he keeps getting electrocuted and he powers through it. I should also point out that when the movie got released in America there was an extra Godzilla scene added (specifically for American audiences) where the US military comes in with their heavy firepower to try and stop Godzilla. They manage to knock him down but he just gets back up. (On a side note if you have to watch a version of this movie I recommend the US version because of the extra scene and also the dubbing is done very well. Especially compared to other dubs of some Godzilla movies).
This is also pretty much the last movie where Godzilla is the full blown villain until the Heisei series and they make the most of it. He truly is unstoppable in this movie. It takes 3 mothras to take him down in the end and even then the two larvas only really web him up and don't actually kill him.
The fights in this movie are good. Not as good as in King Kong vs Godzilla but still entertaining. It was pretty intense when Godzilla kills the adult Mothra. You feel a sense that all hope is somewhat lost and that Godzilla can't be beat. (The music really helps emphasizes that point). That is until the 2 larva Mothras hatch.
These things are adorable and they can shoot webbing. However I just have a hard time believing that these two monsters were able to stop Godzilla. Granted they used strategy over brute force but it still kind of bugs me to this day. It's my only real gripe with the movie. It's still a very good Kaiju film and is considered one of the best in the series by both fans (especially me) and by critics as well. I love both Godzilla and Mothra and I'm looking forward to seeing these two Kaiju clash once again in the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) film.
Anyways let me know in the comments below what you guys thought of Mothra vs. Godzilla where we can continue to discuss it further. I'll try and update the next part by the end of the week if I can. Thanks for reading!
