Hello everyone and welcome back to another chapter in this Godzilla Discussion page. Sorry this one took so long to post. Every time i try and update this thing i end up typing a little then i move on to something else. So because I want to get this thing out and posted I'll make this a shorter update. That way i can pick up the pace a little with the other chapters. In today's chapter we're going to be talking about Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II. 

Ok, so judging by the title you might be wondering about the (II) in the title. As this is the 3rd movie to feature Mechagodzilla. Well the reason it's titled that is more for western audiences as opposed to eastern Audiences. I guess it helps in distinguishing the two movies and you could argue that the (II) represents the second variation of the character.

Originally this movie was supposed to be a remake of King Kong vs Godzilla but Toho soon realized that getting the rights to king would be expensive. Then they wanted to do Mechani-Kong from King Kong escapes but that proved to be difficult to do they went with remaking Mechagodzilla. Also, since this was the 20th entry in the series Toho was going to bring back the original Godzilla Director Ishiro Honda go direct this one. Although, he had unfortunately passed away before he could direct it. RIP.

Plot: Basically with this one the government uses the remains of mecha King Ghidorah to build a new super weapon to
Kill Godzilla. (Mechagodzilla 2). While all of this is going on we have a bunch of scientists that go to this island and come across what they think is the egg of Rodan!

(In the picture above that attachment to Mechagodzilla's Back is known as Garuda. When combined with Mechagodzilla it forms Super Mechagodzilla. I realized that I forgot to mention it. So here it is now lol).

Yes, Rodan returns making his first appearance since Destroy all Monsters unless you count Stock footage from other Godzilla movies. This version of Rodan is a bit different as he does in fact breathe fire at one point. As far as the design goes I prefer the classic Rodan design. But, this one is ok.

In this movie we are also introduced to Godzilla's son. Also known in this movie as baby Godzilla and hey he actually looks like Godzilla!

I'm happy with the changes. Plus, with baby Godzilla looking so little it gives him a better chance to connect with some of the human characters.

Anyways, let's talk about the new design of mechagodzilla. Out of the 3 designs that we got in this series. This is my least favorite of the 3. It's not awful. I like the cool silver coloring it has. But, when you compare it to the original Mechagodzilla design it sort of lacks personality. The old design came across as more menacing with its look. But, the new design is ok. As far as the weaponry goes there's the standard plasma beams which always look cool. There are a few other things but it doesn't have as many as the old one.

Anyways, after their first battle Mechagodzilla is gets damaged and has to be sent back for repairs. Now, at this point I kind of just want to mention a few highlights and talk about the ending.

In this movie Rodan is able to fire atomic breath. (Something that I'm perfectly ok with in this movie as Rodan is kind of underpowered in this film compared to Godzilla and Mechagodzilla).

Moving on to the climax. By studying the baby Godzilla they (as in the Japanese government) are able to learn a lot. Including finding out that baby Godzilla has a second brain in its tail. Mechagodzilla is able to utilize this weakness and they at one point destroy the second brain in Godzilla's tail.  However, Rodan (who was severely wounded). Utilizes the last of its energy and gives it to Godzilla so that he can become strong again.

After this bit Godzilla comes back stronger than ever and manages to use an even more powerful super atomic breath (its red and not blue). To defeat Mechagodzilla and head back home with his son.

And that's basically the movie. In terms of the second series I would probably rank this one in the middle towards the bottom. Its not necessarily my favorite in the 2nd series. Parts of it do drag and that kind of takes me out of it. Still, there's some good stuff in here. The action scenes are pretty good for a Godzilla movie and not to mention. The musical score by Akire  Ifukube is one of his bests.

I also like the role reversal of this film where Mechagodzilla is the good guy and Godzilla is the bad guy. I thought that was a nice touch.
