Hello everyone and welcome back to another chapter in my Godzilla Discussion page and in this chapter we're going to be talking about the most recent Godzilla movie that just dropped on Netflix called Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. This is the first ever anime Godzilla movie and its going to be the first film in a trilogy of movies set to be released this year.

Ok so this movie just came out a few days ago (at the time that I'm writing this) so I haven't had as much time to let it all settle in. But, let me just go ahead and give my thoughts on it. I liked it but I wasn't exactly blown away by it. Granted this is supposed to be a trilogy with the other 2 parts set to drop this year so it doesn't really feel complete. But, I do appreciate it's unique take on Godzilla.

Plot: In this movie we see that the world is basically at its end and can't defeat Godzilla so the humans decide to evacuate Earth with the help of an alien species. After the humans leave they end up orbiting in space for 20 years looking for a place to relocate too but ultimately decide to head back to earth because their resources are dying and they end up 20.000 years into the future. Then they come to find Godzilla is still alive and evolved and they have to find a way to stop him.

Major Spoilers ahead!

So the humans arrive and they come across some weird looking creatures and then they find "Godzilla" or at least an offspring of his. We also see that Godzilla has some new force field abilities that they try to disable and when they do so they end up defeating him in the process. I'll admit when I saw this initially I began to wonder why they would kill Godzilla so soon if they were going to be making a trilogy. Then it turns out that isn't entirely the case as the Godzilla they fought 20,000 years ago is alive and he's bigger than any Godzilla in history.

I mean holy shit! Look at the size difference. That's insane. This is the most ridiculously overpowered Godzilla in history. He's the size of a mountain! Then at the end of the movie (in the only holy shit scene of the movie) this Godzilla rises up and wipes out almost everyone in an instant and it's awesome! Then lastly the movie ends with the lead character Haruo Sakaki vowing for revenge against Godzilla. (In a post credit scene we see Haruo being taken care of by some girl from Earth).

Godzilla

Ok let's talk about Godzilla in this movie. He looks like a cross between The Godzilla 2014 design and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. I saw a name online where they called him Grootzilla and it's a fitting name. Now, as far as his look goes I don't find the CGI that appealing or the design as a whole. I think it should have been 2D anime style instead of a 3D anime style. It would have looked better. As far as his other abilities go the atomic breathe is different this time around as it's more of a rapid fire beam than how it's normally portrayed. He also has this force field ability and when he annihilates all those people at the end of the movie his breath does something crazy where it destroys everyone.

Characters:
This movie has so many characters in it that after 2 watches I still can't really remember any of their names except for Haruo Sakaki who is the main character. It's tough to forget him because he's just so angry throughout this entire movie . His backstory is that his family was killed by Godzilla and he wants to do nothing more than to kill him and return everyone to earth. I hope to see more of what he's capable and how he evolves over the course of this trilogy.

Action Scenes
There are some pretty good action scenes in this movie. The characters in the movie have mech technologies and these hover boards with lasers on them and it's pretty cool. The final action piece involving the Godzilla from 20,000 years ago is especially cool.

Teases For the Next Movie
In this movie we got a couple of Easter eggs. But, the biggest tease was that the aliens on the movie were working on Mechagodzilla to take Godzilla out once and for all. Hopefully we get to see some cool action scenes between these 2 in the next film.

Overall Thoughts
While I still liked the movie I didn't really love it. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it doesn't really feel like a complete movie. It's more of a set up for the next one and that can be disappointing. Plus, I think the movie drags a bit here and there. The characters aren't the greatest, and I think the movie really needed some classic Akira Ifukube music because while some of the score was good it really lacked compared to some of that older stuff. However, the most interesting thing about this movie is it's unique take on Godzilla and that's the main reason to watch this movie. We still have over a year until Legendary Pictures Godzilla Kong of the Monsters hits theaters so until then this Anime trilogy will be there so we can get our Godzilla fix. It's only part 1 of the story and I think now that everything is established that we see an improvement in the sequel.

All Caught Up:
Well I've done it. I'm finally all caught up with the movies. Can you believe that I have been working on this since July of 2017. It's crazy to think about. I didn't think it would take me this long to do but I did it so that's all that matters. But, now that I'm caught up with the movies I can start talking the tv shows, cameos, and other things about Godzilla including the comics and video games or whatever. But, don't worry I'm not ending this book yet. I'm still going to talk about the next Godzilla movie when that comes out. I might even start talking about other Toho monster movies in the process or take some suggestions in the comments m. I'm not sure yet.
