Godzilla (2014) Discussion
Well here we are once again to talk some more Godzilla! This time it's American made and with Legendary Pictures and it is officially the start of the Monsterverse!
Unlike Godzilla 1998 this movie is actually good. I've rewatched this one several times. I still have some issues with it but, overall I think it's one of the best Godzilla films ever made. I think that with just a few tweaks this could have been so much better. But, still i think it's a great time.
Plot: The movie opens up in 1999 as Dr. Serizawa and the organization known as Monarch begin investigating some stuff in the Philippines. Then the creature (known as the MUTO (Massive. Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) makes its way to Janjira Japan where there's a nuclear reactor. It is the. Where we are introduced to the Brody family. (Our leads in the movie). First, you have Joe Brody who is played by Bryan Cranston. (He's awesome in the movie and is by far the best actor). His wife Sandra and their son Ford. Then in a really tragic scene the MUTO destroys the reactor and Joe is forced to seal his wife in it. Like I said the acting by Cranston here is fantastic and after the first 15 minutes this movie is on fire with how good it is.

Then 15 years later we see that Ford (played by Aaron Taylor Johnson) is all grown up and has a wife and kid. What's funny about this is that Elizabeth Olsen plays his wife in this movie and in the next movie they did together (Avengers: Age of Ultron) they play brother and sister. I'm not sure why I brought that up. It's just something I noticed. But, anyways so Ford is enjoying his time when he goes back to Japan after his dad got arrested. You see in the years since his wife died Joe has become some sort of conspiracy theorist and this leads the two of them to go back into the quarantine zone so he can prove that what happened to his wife was not a natural disaster. Soon they realize that it's all a cover up by monarch and that they're hiding something.

Once again this is a well acted scene by Cranston. The stuff between him and Ford is pretty good. It's a shame that it doesn't last much longer because following this the MUTO hatches for the first time in a pretty cool scene.

So the MUTO is on the loose now and Ford and joe are going to try and get back home now right? Well half right because unfortunately Joe Brody dies only 30 minutes in and we're stuck with Ford as our protagonist for the rest of the movie. I don't have a problem with them killing Cranston in this movie. But, they killed him off far too early to do so. Plus, he's been the one we're the most invested in amongst this cast. If you're going to kill him off then at least wait until the end of the second act and you can make this movie more about Ford and Joe reconnecting and maybe at one point Joe sacrifices himself which in turn gives Ford the drive to save the day. I don't know. Just do more than what you did because Ford is a pretty dull lead. He worked fine opposite Cranston but the problem is he's just boring on his own and can't really carry the movie all to himself. Anyways, I think I rambled on about them long enough. So joe does and Ford tries to head back home. But, unfortunately the MUTO shows up in Hawaii to cause some damage. It's at this point where Godzilla finally makes his first appearance and it's amazing.

The buildup to Godzilla's first appearance is incredible. Then when he finally roars I remember everyone in my theater applauding and then it cuts away....

The clip below above up my thoughts completely. Like what the hell!? Why would you cut away from that!? This brings me to my other biggest problem with the movie and that's the constant cutting away and the fact that there's a bit too much teasing going on here. This is the point where I start to lose it in the movie. The second act is weak compared to the first act. There's still some cool stuff that goes on. We find out that there's a second and much larger MUTO (a female MUTO) that lays waste to Vegas.

Now, with the MUTOS causing havoc across the country the government plans to lure them out to sea with a nuke so that they can be killed by the blast. The issue though is that the MUTOs have an EMP attack that fries all electronics. At one point in the movie the female steals the nuke they're after and takes it to San Francisco where the big final battle takes place. But, before Godzilla gets there he takes out the Golden Gate Bridge.

Oh and there's the Awesome halo jump scene.

All great stuff. So the MUTOS meet up with each other in order to mate. But Godzilla comes in to break it up and from there we get some awesome scenes. First, there's the first time he uses his atomic breath.

A truly epic moment but still not the coolest of all. That's saved for the ending. You see after the military tries to get a nuke with a ticking clock out of the city but the female MUTO tries to stop them. Then after he finished off with killing the male MUTO Godzilla shows up to do this...

This is one of the best scenes in any Godzilla movie in history. My jaw hit the floor in shock of what he did here. It was such a satisfying moment. Afterwards Ford is reunited with his family and Godzilla goes back to the sea.

It's a satisfying ending that has a complete beginning, middle, and end. Now, before we close out this chapter I wanted to talk about a few more things.
M.U.T.O.S.

The MUTOS make pretty good villains and are a good foil for Godzilla. By the end of the movie you really begin to hate these things and want to see Godzilla kick their asses.

Ok so let's talk about Godzilla. He's great in this movie for the limited screen time he has. I understand the approach that the director Gareth Edwards was going for with a less is more type approach. However, Godzilla is the character that we've come here to see and he deserved more screen time. As far as his design goes I think it's pretty good and is a nice update. You see that design and you know it's him. Plus I feel like they got the character right. At the end of the day Godzilla is just an animal looking for survival and that's how he's handled in this movie.

Overall Godzilla 2014 is a pretty solid film. It has some flaws that I think could have been fixed with one more draft of the script. We were so close to that A+ Godzilla movie but this one didn't quite reach that mark. Oh and before i forget to mention it the score for this movie is fantastic and is well worth a listening to. After this film Came out they announced a sequel and the start of the Monsterverse which would include both movies and tie in comic books. For instance there was a Godzilla Awakening comic book that acts as a prequel to the movie. After this film we would end up getting the next movie in the Monsterverse and that's Kong: Skull Island. While that movie is about Kong and the organization Monarch. There is a post credit scene that includes Godzilla. So it's worth checking out.

The sequel to Godzilla 2014 known as Godzilla King of the Monsters is set to come out in 2019 and is set to feature Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Then the year after that we're getting Godzilla vs. Kong in a movie that's set to rewrite reality in terms of being an epic monster movie. So I'm super excited for that. Anyways, i think I've said enough about this movie. If you want to talk about it some more then leave a comment and we can discuss this movie further along with the rest of the Monsterverse. Oh and I also wanted to mention that Godzilla Planet of the Monsters was just released Netflix today so go ahead and check that our. Once again thanks for reading and have a nice day.
