Chapter 33 | walls
Next part of the plan was to locate this stupid book. Last time it was Mello who broke into Mikami's house to bug it. But this time you were coming along to detect the death note.
While he was off at work, it was time to strike. Thanks to Hypnos and Morpheus you had a general idea where it'd be, inside the walls. Now you needed to find the exact location in said walls. So in your wingless form, you and Mello drove down to the house of the suspect and waited on the corner until he left. When he finally did, you hopped the fence making sure no one saw you and broke in through the back door using Mello's lock picking skills.
While he was here, he'd be removing the now unnecessary bugs and cameras. Some would remain up for observation purposes, but most taken form now you knew where the death note likely was.
You stood in Mikami's pristine room that looked hardly lived in. Like an IKEA showroom, it was neat and bland. No personality at all. But that was to be expected form a guy as rigid as him.
"So it's in that area?" Mello asked.
"That's what Morpheus managed to dream up. Somewhere around the corner" you replied.
"Pin point it and make note, I'll get the cameras and bugs we don't need down"
It'd been a hot minute since you'd needed to use your mirror, but you always had it nearby. Tapping the glass to wake its power up, the rim glowed a dim blue. Blue meant there was a sadness or boredom in the area, the aura of a melancholic person or thing. This was Mikami's room after all, you weren't surprised. He always seemed rather blank. Taking the mirror over to the walls, you began to hover it around the plaster like using a metal detector, watching for a change in colour.
"This is how you found the last death note right?" Mello asked, climbing onto the desk to take a wiretap down.
"Yep, flew over the suicide Forrest looking for the death notes aura" you replied.
"Damn that psycho went into the suicide Forrest to bury it? Forgot that detail"
"Not like a murderer would be scared of seeing a dead body. The aura in that place was really heavy though, very sad and helpless. No wonder people find the area so scary and upsetting"
It was no secret the Forrest held some dark connotations, and it was sad. Really sad that so many felt the call of the void and wandered in to never come out again. You just hoped they were enjoying whatever life they lived now and would never experience that again.
"That was also the day L got to see Ryuk huh?" Mello asked.
"Yep. He was rather stunned to say the least" You replied.
Mello snickered, imagining how L would react to seeing a shinigami for the first time. He couldn't really imagine someone like L being scared, but uneasy? That he could.
"I mean I think I'd be a bit freaked out too if I wasn't being babysat but the kami and taught about magic from a young age" Mello replied.
"You and the others are probably the only mortals to be babysat by kami and not become demigods by some strange set of events" You replied.
"Don't jinx it, we'll end up nymphs or something if you say it like that"
Something told you that L wouldn't mind his kids becoming nymphs though, that means they'd get to live much longer and stay young. You weren't sure what the trio would pick given the chance to give up mortality, it was a rare thing to happen and a pretty big decision. The situation L was in was a one in a million chance he just got lucky enough to land.
"Mells" you spoke up.
"Yeah?" He replied, pulling some of the wires from their hiding spots.
"If you had the chance to become immortal, would you take it?"
"Fuck yeah. Beats dying by a long shot, I mean sure I'd probably reincarnate if I died. But then I'd have to start over and I'd forget you, L, Matt and Near... my life before wammys was shit and I'd love to get rid of that memory but everything after it... I can't just leave that behind you know? Plus I think L would pull and Achillies and rage on anyone that comes near him if me and the others died" Mello explained.
He was right, L would be crushed. You didn't know if there was some way to immortalise the trio, but if there was you'd jump at the chance to offer that so you could be together forever as a family. Of course though if they didn't want to, you wouldn't force them.
As far as you knew the only way to become an immoral was to be born one, die a tragic death like you did, or have a god soulmate like L did. Was there a way like in the myths you didn't know about? Being dunked in a magic river like Achillies (apart from his heel, which lead to his death), or completing a set of tasks like the 12 labours? You'd never heard of something like that, that wasn't just a story. And the kami certainly haven't told you anything if they knew about it.
You were going to ask Mello more about his views on death, but the change in the colour of your mirror stole your attention away.
"Oh! Is that it?" You muttered, moving your mirror around the wall watching it darken.
You came to rest on the lower wall right by the corner, anywhere else and your mirror would turn from black back to blue.
"That's it, found it" you said.
Mello walked over, looking over your shoulder and watching the colours shift when you moved the mirror around.
"So that's what it looks like to detect stuff... that's definitely gotta be it then" he replied.
"Definitely, easy spot to remember too. Right by the corner, now we just need to get it out of the wall"
That was something you'd have to do another day, something you'd need Hypnos' coma spell for. For now, you'd take note and get back to L on the whereabouts.
"Hey (y/n)" Mello spoke up.
"Hm?"
"If there is some way to make us immortal, do it. I don't care what it takes... I can't just loose you guys. You're the only family I've ever had"
Ouch, right in the feels. Even all grown up dressed in leather and dripping with edge, Mello was still you and L's little kiddo at heart.
"Definitely, promise" you replied.
You hoped there was some way, for his sake and L's.
