Chapter 29 | dedication
"You're really not going to use the death note for anything else? It's yours you know, you can do what you want"
"I'm carrying out gods will Shidoh, that is what I want"
The shinigami stuck to this death note didn't quite understand the mindset and intentions of this human, he was weird. Who'd be that dedicated to a murderous guy that got killed anyway? But Shidoh was stuck to Mikami as long as he had the death note.
"I mean, your choice buddy but I think you're weird as fuck. I don't doubt L will be after you, you could have avoided that if you used the death note for anything BUT Kira" the shinigami shrugged.
"Why else would I have been given the death note, if not to carry out gods will? If that means confronting L then so be it" Mililani replied.
Shidoh wasn't really paying much attention to the case like Ryuk had. He was only here because he was stuck to the death note, he'd dropped it years ago looking for something to do but when no one picked it up be promptly forgot about it. Until about 12 years later it was picked up, by Mikami while he was out in the mountains on a work trip. The book had landed in a Forrest, not super highly traveled but it did have hiking trails and a shrine nearby. So how the hell the note sat there for that long unnoticed, Shidoh had no idea.
And now he was stuck to this weird guy. Not weird because of his routines and obvious OCD tendencies, but weird because of just how obsessed he was with Kira. It was like watching a super evangelical person going door to door asking if you have a moment for our lord and saviour. But on steroids. He was completely obsessed, the only way Shidoh could describe it was like the manga trope 'yandere'. Someone who is so obsessed with something they hurt themselves or others to feed into said obsession. Not exactly something to strive for.
But in the whole time he'd been following Mikami around he had noticed one thing, the presence of other gods. He could feel them, not all the time but when he was questioned on that website he was part of, he could feel other gods nearby. A very strong type as well, almost Kami like. He had no doubt that the kami were involved again, but he hadn't been paying attention to what was going on up there.
"You know other gods exist right? I'm one of them" Shidoh said.
"I'm aware shinigami exist, I mean you're right there. But Kira is a different kind, a higher being, a kami" Mikami replied.
"Kami? Ha, sure. The original Kira is in Tartarus last I heard"
Mikami stopped his scrolling through the news article of a recent murder he was reading, to get the name and face of the criminal so he could kill them. Turning to Shidoh he gave the shinigami a confused look.
"Tartarus?" he asked.
"Yeah, the underworld? I guess Japan would be more knowledgeable on their own mythology huh. You know Greek myth right?"
The human nodded, now intrigued.
"Basically it's where all the worst people go. The reason the original Kira stopped killing is because he got caught by the kami and tossed into Tartarus. He was fucking up the life and death balance between realms" Shidoh explained.
"So an afterlife does exist then? But the death note-" Mikami replied.
"We didn't completely lie in the rules. MU is a place, it's we're you go while you wait to either be reincarnated or retire to the underworld. There's no heaven or hell in the way you humans think of it. That rule is in there to try and deter people from using the death note, but you and the original Kira ignored that anyway"
In Mikami's mind when he first began to follow Kira, he assumed Kira was some kind of god figure. And when he found the death note and met a shinigami it became clear that Kira was (in his mind) like the myths of mortals who ascend to godhood. Once a regular mortal, given a power that turned him into a god. And now he had that power too, he could continue what Kira first started while honouring the original Kira.
"If Tartarus is real, and shinigami are real, then how many of the world's myths are real?" Mikami asked.
"Most of em, you humans just wildly misconstrue the stories. And for some reason you all think there's only one god? That's some bullshit, there's tons of them. It's the Kami, the big boss gods you want to watch out for. I don't doubt they'll be after your ass for using the death note. And me for dropping it in the first place probably..." Shidoh explained.
"So that means... Kira must have been trying to ascend to the Kami status to gain enough power to create his new world. And the current Kami stopped him from it?"
"Yep, pretty much. That (y/n) and L duo fucked him up real hard"
"L? He's not a god he's a detect-"
Shidoh watched the gears turn in the man's brain for a moment, as he suddenly realised that the title of 'L' had been around a very long time. If L were mortal he'd be in his 40s-50s by now, which while isn't exactly old enough for retirement, is still a long time to be doing the exact same job.
"L ascended, but Kira didn't?" Mikami muttered.
"Yep, all because of (y/n) and their magic pussy or whatever"
Mikami visibly cringed, that description sounded like something he didn't want or need the details of.
"Spare me the details... but you're telling me that L reached godhood, but Kira didn't? That's absurd. Kira is the one that aimed for a cleansed world of evil, the one that obtained the power of death and worked relentlessly to fix the world. What did L do? Sleep with some god? He hardly worked for his title and now he wants to try and stop the Kira mission? Well he may have stopped the original Kira, but he can't stop the Kira title. Not me. I don't need to be a god, I just need the world to be cleansed and Kira's name to be respected" Mikami rambled.
What a strange man, the shinigami thought.
He didn't want godhood, or to do his own thing with the death note. He wanted to continue the will of some dead guy as if he were the second coming of Christ. A prophet, a messiah or something. Despite being up against immortals far more powerful than him, he still felt he could change the world in Kira's image.
He recalled hearing when Ryuk dropped the first book, and asking him why the hell he did that. After all, his own book never even got picked up, why would Ryuks?
And he said it was because he was bored and humans were so very interesting. Shidoh understood what he meant now, humans were interesting. Especially ones that pick up the death note apparently, because this was the strangest yet most entertaining man he'd ever seen.
So overconfident, so ignorant to the realms and world of magic and yet using a powerful weapon of mass destruction. So sure of himself and what he believed in he was willing to kill in the name of someone he never met, saw as a god and now knows that he's dead in Tartarus.
How very peculiar indeed. So, so interesting.
