Chapter 24 | twist
Love and justice were two things that tied together. You fought for justice out of love, the people you care about the most are the ones you relentlessly fight for. So it was no wonder most of the tasks L took on as a mixed deity of love and justice were issues regarding defending and avenging loved ones. There was am influx in witches and devotees coming to him to ask for justice for their loved ones that had been lost to Kira. And he wished he could so somehow more than just grant them the strength to keep going and keep fighting. But unfortunately, he couldn't raise the dead. Nor would be be permitted to if he could.
He trusted his successors with the monitoring of Mikami currently going on, about three days into his surveillance and every second of those three days you and the group were more and more sure he was the culprit.
L was able to step away from the case for a moment, to attend to his duties as a god. So it was up to the highlands he went, over to his chambers to listen to the pleads of his devotees and accept offerings, grant them all he could. While he still got the usual 'please protect my partner' and 'please let my enemies get what they deserve' ever since Kira 2 came along, there'd been so many people coming to him crying over the loss of their loved ones taken by Kira.
Witches crying at their alters begging for something to be done, devotees barely able to utter a word through their grief but L knew what they wished for just by the lit candle and funeral attire.
He wished he could do something. Something more than just telling them it would be ok, and justice would be served. He knew how much it hurt to loose a loved one. He's lost plenty, and for centuries he lost you while he was stuck in the reincarnation system and you were a god. It's a lonely, empty feeling. A void that'll never truly be filled no matter how much therapy and smiles you end up with.
It broke him. Looking down at the windows into the human realm at his devotees so broken and defeated.
"L, it's me again. Sorry I haven't been leaving offerings lately. It's been hard..."
He looked over at the window down to the human realm. One of his devotees had finally come back to their altar after weeks. When he spoke to them, they couldn't hear him but they could read the signs. They knew what the flickers of a candle meant and the change in incense smoke.
"Don't worry yourself over it my child, I understand" he replied.
He seemed to have picked up 'my child' from Aphrodite. She also called her devotees her children.
"I don't know what to do anymore. I still can't believe she's gone... it's like there's a gaping hole in my chest. She was my everything, she wasn't a bad person. She only stole because she was so poor she couldn't feed herself. But look at how much she grew! She ended up recovered and healthy, got her degree and had a job she loved. One tiny spec of a criminal record got her killed... I just... I miss her so much..." the witch sighed, on the verge of tears.
Her alter since the death of her fiancé had become dusty, she'd barley taken care of it she was so wracked with grief. The newest thing on it, was a photo of the proposal and a memorial candle for her lost darling.
"I'm sorry... I know how much loosing the one you love the most hurst. I promise you the copycat Kira isn't getting away with this, she didn't deserve it" L replied.
The candle flame stilled as he spoke, conveying his condolences.
"I'll be back to my craft soon... I just need some time. Thank you for understanding, you're a great god to work with" she said.
"Take your time, child. Your well-being is more important than a few offerings" L replied.
The witch sighed, snuffed out the candle and left her altar. The image in the window vanished, returning to its transparent state. L sighed, again another one of his devotees was affected by the current situation. He wanted to scream. He loved his devotees, they were all wonderful people who were bursting with love for the world around them and seeking justice for everyone they came across.
L got up, mood severely dampened and needing to take a break from all the gloom that was his deity work at the moment. He turned into the halls, they were empty at the moment, everyone busy at work. Even with the sheer beauty of the highlands, his gloom wouldn't leave.
He sat at the edge of one of the floating platforms looking down on the clouds. Underneath them was a whole world being affected by some dumb notebook that a dumb megalomaniac used to make a dumb persona. And now some copycat was making it worse.
He hasn't cried in a long time, but finally the stress was getting to him and he didn't even bother to fight it when his eyes welled up.
"Fuck... this is ridiculous. He's dead, he's in Tartarus being tortured for his crimes and he still haunts me..." L muttered to himself, burying his face in his hands.
He wanted to just sit there and wallow in self pity for a moment, but that never got to happen. As soon as the tears from his cheeks touched his hands as he leaned his head into them, he felt a strange ache in his chest. Like someone was grabbing his heart and squeezing it really hard.
It wasn't a heart attack, he was undead. He couldn't exactly die that way. But it was uncomfortable and very confusing.
"Ow- what the-" he seethed clutching his heart.
He looked down at himself, only to be met with the shadow of his rib cage against his skin, something inside him glowing blue to create that shadow. Confused and slightly sore, he didn't know how to react.
That glow ran through his veins, making them visible under his skin and once his whole body had lit up, it was like something clicked inside him. In practically a burst of sparkling like that lasted mere seconds, he felt... different.
He blinked, clearing his vision from the bright light, then looked down at his hands.
They were blue. Blue and... transparent.
"What... WHAT-" he spat, frantically getting up and looking down at his body.
All of it, blue. And transparent with an almost glittery look to it. Like he was made up of stars or fairy dust. He still had his wings, he could feel them on his back, although they felt different. Looking over his shoulder revealed more feathered wings, but the bone that connected them to his back was the same transparent blue, and the shape of feathers was made up of falling sparkles. They moved like wings, but looked like a sparkly waterfall.
Instinctively he went for the nearest source of a reflection, which happened to be a pond under an ambrosia tree. He looked at himself, silent with shock.
His hair floated around his shoulders, his eyes glowers bright gold and his heart was visible through his body and shone like the sun.
What. The. Fuck.
Aphrodite. He needed to find her.
Turning to book it down the halls, he skidded around the corners and into her chambers where he found her making love potions.
"Aph- something happened" he stated.
"With Kira?" She asked.
But then she turned around, and saw exactly what L meant. She stared in shock for a moment, before a massive smile broke on her face.
"Oh my gods! You're beautiful, look at you! It's like you're a... an ocean of stars!" She exclaimed, immediately getting up and rushing over to take a look.
"What happened? What did I do?" L asked.
"L, that's your trust form. You must have finally triggered it. Wooowww (y/n)s going to absolutely flip! Look at you..."
She circled him, taking in all the details and running her hands through his hair and wings, feeling the tingling sensation of the sparkle like substance he was made up of.
"It makes a lot of sense too... the visible beating and glowing heart for love. And the transparency for justice" Aphrodite muttered.
"But how did I- I didn't do anything different. I was just tending to my devotees and then I got sad and..."
"Did you cry?"
"Yeah?"
"Strong emotions often heighten magic you know? And how long has it been since you've felt that strongly?" She explained.
Of course... over the course of the case he'd been so worried about the ones he loved, so stressed about bringing justice, so saddened to see his devotees suffer. And it all accumulated into finally triggering his shift into his truest form.
"Woah... I... I need to get (y/n). They have to see this, stat" he said.
"They're going to freak out, they're one lucky deity to have a god as absolutely gorgeous as you Lawliet. Just look at yourself..." Aphrodite replied.
He would admit... it was a pretty cool look.
A/n: visual representation of L's true form.
He glows in the dark! Can't really express the fact the stars are all moving in a still drawing. But they're all falling in a cascading waterfall type way.
