Chapter 17 | the future
A man in a black suit, carrying a briefcase. His face obscured by glasses and long hair. That's who'd been repeatedly showing up in the godling of dreams slumber recently. At first he brushed it off, most dreams were just your mind filling in gaps of memory based on things you already knew. They can make little sense, they can be a mishmash of random abstract thoughts all strung together in a seemingly random order. But when a dream becomes reoccurring, that's when you start to take notice.
Morpheus being the god equivalent of around 5 years old, didn't have the best handle on his power yet. He couldn't shape a dream yet, he could remember them well and summon a dream at will but he couldn't get bend it into what he wanted it to be like yet. One day when he had full control over the powers, Hypnos would pass the remaining of his control over dreams down to his son. But right now, little Morpheus was still trying to understand how his powers worked. And while his dad was helping as best as he could, there were some thing he'd just need to keep practicing on and get the hang of it with time.
But that man in the black suit, who'd been showing up in his dreams a lot, he had a feeling was prophetic. This may be his first prophetic dream, his gateway into learning the powers of a prophetic dream.
The godling was absentmindedly weaving flower crowns out of the poppies in his fathers garden, while Hypnos lay in a hammock and had his nose in stacks of parchment. When he was born, his mother had documented how he and his siblings powers developed over time. And all these eons later she still had them and Hypnos was flipping through the box full of papers on how his powers had developed. The hope was to draw parallels on what he'd experienced and what Morpheus was experiencing.
It seemed he'd developed his powers around dreams around the same age as Morpheus was so that was definitely a good sign he was onto something here. His mother also took note that the first time he had a prophetic dream it was about the birth of a fellow god, Hermes. He'd been talking about having dreams were a kid had wings on his shoes and steals some cows. And not long after those dreams began, Hermes was born and immediately chose mischief, thinking it would be hilarious to steal Apollos sacred cattle.
Hypnos was seriously thinking these dreams about a man in a black suit, with a briefcase holding a black book were prophetic dreams about this new Kira.
"Dada"
Hypnos looked up from the parchment, finding Morpheus crawling into the hammock with him.
"Hey my little daydream, what up?" He asked.
"I made you a crown!" The godling smiled, holding up the more finished poppy crown.
Hypnos wanted to cry. He was such a sap for his child, loved them so much it made his heart burst when they did something cute like that.
"Aww! Thank you my darling baby! Aren't you a little artist?" He smiled, allowing Morpheus to place the crown on his head, slipping it over his one wing.
"When will my flowers grow? I want to make a crown for me too" the child asked.
Hypnos looked over at the newer part of the garden, the part he and Morpheus had planted together with the flowers of his choosing. The stems were coming in nicely, they looked almost ready to bloom.
"I'd say pretty soon, but if you want to speed things up a little we can always ask one of the nature gods to help" Hypnos said.
"Nuh-uh, I want them naturally grown with no magic like yours" Morpheus replied.
"Then I'd give them a few more weeks to fully flower, not too long"
The godling yawned, his little wings fluttering as he did. Just as sleepy as his dad always was, he laid his head down on his fathers chest and wrapped his arms around him.
"M' sleepy..." he muttered.
"You and me both, it's in our blood" Hypnos replied, putting a hand on his back and gently rubbing circles.
"Dada will I have the dream about the man again?"
"Maybe, you've been having that dream a lot lately. Is it the same every time?"
He thought for a moment, recalling the details of each dream about the man he'd had.
"Not always. It's a little bit different sometimes... but it's always the same man and always the same routine. He goes to his work, then home and then a sport place with the sport machines" he explained.
A gym, he meant a gym. Not a common thing for the kami, they got the exercise they needed from all the work they'd did just being gods. It wasn't all lounging around, it was maintaining the highlands too.
"Hmm... and does he always have the black book?" Hypnos asked.
"Yeah, it's always in his briefcase and he takes it out when he's at home and writes things down. I can't read it, it's in another language, the one L can do" Morpheus explained.
L could speak, read and write a lot of languages, but aside from English the one he used most often was Japanese. A language Morpheus was yet to learn.
"Japanese? Hm... guy keeps a black book in his briefcase and is Japanese, same routine every day... maybe it really could be Kira..." Hypnos muttered.
"Are my dreams developing? Because I keep having the same ones?" Morpheus asked.
"I think so, I think you're starting to have prophetic dreams. I had my first when I was your age, it was about Hermes stealing Apollo's cows"
Morpheus giggled, he'd heard that story from the gods involved themselves. Even though it was in the past and Apollo and Hermes were buddies now, they still joked about that time. Apollo would always bring up the cows whenever he needed to tease Hermes about something.
"He was younger than me when he stole those cows" Morpheus laughed.
"He was, good thing you're not that much of a troublemaker. I don't think I could keep up with you then!" Hypnos teased.
As if a child of Hypnos' could ever be hyper. All his kids if he ever had more would be sleepy little clouds. Maybe some would be a bit moody if they turned out like his twin, but definitely not high energy. There was always a slightly emo one in the family, and for Hypnos and his siblings that was Thanatos. Suppose being death would make you a bit somber though.
"If you keep having those dreams tell me ok? I think your powers are definitely developing. And I'm sure (y/n) and L would want to hear about that man with the black book, it might be who they're looking for" Hypnos said.
"Kira?" Morpheus replied.
"It might be, or maybe someone who knows Kira. Your dreams could help solve the case kiddo, it'd be your first prophetic event as a god. Very interesting indeed"
Morpheus wanted answers about his strange dreams, so he'd remember to tell his father everything he knew when he had them. He also wanted you and L to finish the case so he could play with you guys again when Hypnos was busy with his nightly duties. He liked you and L, you'd become those family friends who weren't related but still got called Auntie and Uncle.
"Will I be as powerful as you one day dada?" Morpheus asked.
"Morphie darling, I think you'll be even more powerful than me one day. You're learning very quickly my daydream, you'll grow into an incredible Kami" Hypnos replied, placing a comforting dad kiss on his sons forehead.
"I love you dada"
"I love you too kiddo, you'll do great things"
Not only did he have his mother to thank for teaching him how to be a good parent, but you and L as well. All those days watching the successors grow up and L hold their hand every step of the way while you cheered them on, that was the best parenting lesson a god could ask for.
