Chapter 11 | cult

It was peaceful, there was no pain, and he was surrounded by those most important to him. But even knowing that Watari was still contactable and down in Asphodel, it still hurt to see him go.

So while the wammys family took some time to process and mourn the loss of their mentors mortal life, you gave them some space and did some of your own research into this new Kira.

The situation had really intrigued you, not so much because of the power involved. You knew it was a death note, and you knew this was a copycat killing. But more because of the impact it'd had on spirituality.

You see, when the original Kira rose, the mortals obviously thought that this was some kind of vengeful god or at the very least someone with the power of a vengeful god. No mortal can kill with only a heart attack to the knowledge of the majority of humans. Only very few knew that death notes were a thing and that was the reason behind the deaths. So naturally, the human population had their world views changed.

Those who acknowledged that Kira was merely a maniac with some kind of power detested him, but we'd intrigued by what exactly that power was. But the supporters? They had their whole world shaken. To them, Kira was proof that higher beings existed, and while they were right, they aren't exactly meant to know that. And Kira? He's hardly a higher being.

As the case went on, the debate about weather Kira was a god or not heated up. And eventually, a cult formed. You hesitated to call it a religion, as Kira was no god. But it was undoubtedly a cult. It was ritualistic in nature, with extremely string beliefs and worship. All over a false prophet of sorts.

You couldn't exactly blame the mortals who fell into the cult of Kira, they didn't know any better. They saw him as a being with powers to kill and control the actions of the dying. What clueless mortal wouldn't be scared of power like that?

Kira was a rather unique example of a cult thought, because there was no leader. There was an idol, but no one leader. You didn't doubt there were sub-sects, that someone had taken advantage of peoples belief in Kira and used it to form their own cult. Like a cult within a cult.

Cult leaders are manipulative, they take people who are in a vulnerable position and lure them in with false promises and a sense of community, with love bombing to get your trust and guard down. And before you know it you're trapped, and you can't even see the fact you are. Your life is worse than it was before, but you can't recognise it because you've been tricked into thinking that this is the truth. The right way of living.

So you had no doubt someone out there has probably taken the belief in Kira, used it ti their advantage to lure people into their own group. Telling them that 'you aren't a true Kira supporter unless you do it this particular way'.

But it was the impact of Kira as a whole that was the fascinating part to you. Because his followers had all the telltale signs of a cult... but without a leader. You could argue that Kira WAS the leader, but that's just the thing, he's dead. He was a mortal with a god complex who fucked around and found out. Doomed to rot in the underworld forever.

Again, you didn't want to call it a religion. That'd be an insult to religion as a whole. You were a Kami, you had followers and you knew first hand what a real religion made in good faith was like. A proper god doesn't harm their followers, shun them or tell them they need to change who their are. They love them, understand that everyone's circumstances are different, that everyone is different and you help when you can.

If someone who followed you forgot to give you an offering, you wouldn't be mad. You know that life can be hectic and there's a million reasons why they'd forget. Perhaps they were busy with work, maybe they're tight on money and couldn't afford to spruce up the altar, maybe they're sick or hurt. A real god? They understand. They don't push people to change or fear them.

That's why Kira was such a pathetic excuse for a god. He was all about submission via fear, didn't take his followers into consideration and saw them as nothing but ego boosters. That, and he lacked the form of a god. Without that stupid little book, he was just flesh and blood, no power and no immortality. He was a human like every one of his followers was.

So what would you call Kiras cult? Certainly not a religion, maybe a cult although it lacked a leader and had an idol instead.

As you expected once hearing there was a copycat Kira, the cult had sprung back into action. They'd been quiet in the years post Kira, always there in the shadows doing their silly little rituals to try and bring him back. And finally he was back, not the same one but that didn't know that did they?

It was all this, the looking into Kiras cult and the impact it had that lead you to deduce something.

This Kira, they were a member of that cult. They followed the original Kira and finding the death note to them felt like they'd been given a task from Kira. Like they were the chosen one. A decibel, a warrior of Kira. But they knew they couldn't be caught, or they'd absolutely be arrested by figure known as L.

This Kira was meticulous. Everything was on schedule and done with purpose. Each kill happed at the same time every day. On the hour every hour, scattered across the world to throw off the scent of investigators. That would be their mistake. While being meticulous was a good trait to have when making a routine of something, murder isn't something you want a routine for. It only makes it easier for investigators to make connections. The fact these killings started with no tests like the original Kira did with the 'shinigami love apples' notes, or any gaps between killings means that whoever found this death note knows that it's Kira's source of power.

They figured that out, decided that this was Kiras way of telling them they're the chosen one and set out to continue the reign. You doubted this Kira viewed themselves as a god, more like a messenger for a god. They were doing this as a form of worship, hence the rigid time schedule, like it was a ritual.

After sifting through all the data you'd collected so far, and looking into the public reaction to Kiras return along with the community that was the cult of Kira, you were absolutely certain this was a case of a copycat killer, doing it in the name of who they thought was god.

Weather they had the same power trip as Light did and has become a leader of a Kira movement without revealing his secret toy weren't sure. But you sure as hell wouldn't be surprised.
