Chapter 2: To Jotunheim
"No." Zima says, "Absolutely not. All we'd be doing is getting ourselves killed, or worse."
"She's right." Fandral adds, "This isn't like a journey to Earth where you summon a little lightning and thunder, and the mortals worship you as a god. This is Jotunheim."
"My father fought his way into Jotunheim, defeated their armies and took their Casket. We would just be looking for answers." Thor counters.
"It is forbidden!" Sif says.
Thor simply laughed and walked over to us. "My friends, have you forgotten all that we have done together? Fandral, Hogun, who led you into the most glorious of battles?"
"You did." Hogun answers.
"And Volstagg, to delicacies so succulent, you thought you'd died and gone to Valhalla?" Thor asks.
"You did." He responds.
"And who proved wrong all who scoffed at the idea that a young maiden could be one of the fiercest warriors this realm has ever known?"
"I did." Sif says with confidence.
"True, but I supported you, Sif. And Zima-"
"No." She cut him off. "Please do not even try."
Surprisingly, Thor backed down and continued. "My friends, we're going to Jotunheim."
With that settled, everyone went to prepare for battle. They grabbed their weapons, added any extra armor if needed, and prepared their horses to ride out to the Bifrost.
"This is insane." Zima says to Sif, who was tying her hair back. "Who knows how much trouble we'll be in."
"I know." She responds, "but you don't have to come along with us if you really don't want to."
"Believe me, I don't want to, but I feel like I have to."
Once they arrived at the gate, they approached the Gatekeeper Heimdall, who already knew what they were there for.
"Heimdall, may we pass?" Thor asks.
"Never has an enemy slipped my watch until this day." The Gatekeeper replies. "I wish to know how that happened."
"Then tell no one where we have gone until we've returned. Understand?" Thor says, and the group enters the gateway, which started to open in front of them.
"Be warned." Heimdall says, "I will honor my sworn oath to protect this realm as its Gatekeeper. If your return threatens the safety of Asgard, Bifrost will remain closed to you and you will be left to die in the cold waste of Jotunheim."
"Couldn't you just leave the bridge open for us?" Volstagg asks.
"To leave the bridge open would unleash the full power of the Bifrost and destroy Jotunheim with you upon it." Heimdall informs.
"I have no plans to die today." Thor says.
"None do." Heimdall responds before sending them through the gate to Jotunheim.
When the group arrived, they looked around them with a tense silence, until it was broken by Hogun.
"We shouldn't be here." He says.
"Let's move." Thor says, ignoring him, and starts to move forward with the others following behind.
Sif was the first to follow, then Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun, Loki, and finally Zima. The young lady continued to look around nervously as she started to trail a bit behind. After a while, Loki eventually noticed this and waited for her to catch up.
"Are you alright, love?" He asks, taking her hand in his as the two started to catch up with the others.
"I hope so." She responds. "This place makes me feel a little nervous."
"I'm sure you're not the only one who feels that way." He tells her, "If it helps, stay close to me."
They continued to walk in a long silence until they reached the Frost Giant palace. Oddly, there was no one around.
"Where are they?" Sif asks.
"Hiding." Thor says, "As cowards always do."
They continued inside and saw Laufey, the Frost Giant king, waiting for them.
"You've come a long way to die, Asgardians." He tells them.
"I am Thor Odinson!" Thor says to him.
"We know who you are."
"How did your people get into Asgard?"
"The House of Odin is full of traitors."
"Do not dishonor my father's name with your lies!"
"Your father is a murderer and a thief!" Laufey was now standing as he glared at Thor. "And why have you come here? To make peace? You long for battle. You crave it. You're nothing but a boy trying to prove himself a man."
"Well, this 'boy' has grown tired of your mockery."
As Thor spoke, Zima and the others noticed the other Frost Giants were starting to surround them, and they looked ready for a fight. Loki quickly moved from her side and walked up to his brother.
"Thor, stop and think. Look around you, we're outnumbered."
"Know your place, brother." Thor warns.
"You know not what your actions would unleash." Laufey says. "I do. Go now, while I still allow it."
"We will accept your most gracious offer." Loki says before returning to Zima as one of Laufey's men approached the princes. Thor seemed reluctant, but he eventually turned to leave with the rest of the group.
"Run back home, little princess." The Frost Giant taunted, and everyone stopped, knowing what would happen next. They all swore under their breaths as Thor turned and swung Mjolnir at the Giant.
As the other Frost Giants charged the group, Thor continued to knock more back as the others readied their weapons and fought back. Hogun had his mace, Sif her double-bladed staff, Fandral his rapier, and Volstagg his axe. Meanwhile Loki and Zima stood close, throwing knives and using their illusionist magic on anyone that got close to them. However, one attack forced the two to separate and fight on their own. The battle continued as one of the Giants grabbed Volstagg by the arm, the freezing touch burning his bare skin.
"Don't let them touch you!" He warned after knocking the Giant back.
Shortly after, the Giant Loki was battling against managed to block his attack and grab him, breaking through his armor. However, instead of being burned, his arm turned blue like theirs. This caught the two off guard before the prince killed the Giant and watched as the blue color faded from his hand. Meanwhile, a similar thing happened to Zima after she failed to ambush one. She was also grabbed by the arm and was also surprised that she wasn't hurt, but instead turned blue. 'Something wasn't right.' The two thought to themselves as they continued to fight. Their thoughts were disrupted when Fandral cried out in pain, and they saw that an ice shard had pierced his shoulder. Hogun and Volstagg went to help him and started to retreat, along with Zima, Loki, and Sif. Thor, however, continued to fight.
"Thor!" Sif called.
"We must go!" Loki adds.
"Then go!" Thor calls back, still fighting.
While this was happening, Laufey released a large creature, which started to chase the warriors. They ran as fast as they could while still carrying Fandral, but the ground behind them was starting to collapse as the creature chased them, catching up quickly. As they continued to flee, the ground beneath Zima collapsed and she almost fell, only to be saved by Loki.
"Zima!" He called as he caught her and pulled her to safety before the group reached the edge of the cliff.
"Heimdall! Open the bridge!" Volstagg called, but nothing happened. Instead, the creature, which had been running under them for a while, climbed over the edge and roared at them. There was nothing they could do but watch in horror, fearing for their lives.
Before the creature could attack, it suddenly dropped dead and fell off the cliff, with Thor landing in front of them, looking victorious. This was short lived when everyone saw Laufey and the Frost Giant army had completely surrounded them. The warriors readied themselves for a battle to the death, when suddenly there was a rumble, followed by a flash of light. It was Odin.
"Father!" Thor exclaimed joyously, "We'll finish them together!"
"Silence!" The king hissed as Laufey approached.
"Allfather." He says, "You look weary."
"Laufey, end this now."
"Your boy sought this out."
"You're right. And these are the actions of a boy, treat them as such. You and I can end this here and now, before there's further bloodshed."
"We are beyond diplomacy now, Allfather. He'll get what he came for. War and death."
"So be it."
Laufey then tried to attack Odin, but he was knocked back while everyone was called back to Asgard.
