God's Lesson
My mother had given my money to go to the market as well as a list of what I was supposed to get. When I got to the market I pulled out the list and to myself read off the three items my mother wanted me to get: a watermelon, three peaches, and four granny smith apples. As I made my way over to the fruit stand I bumped into a little girl which made her fall to the ground.
"Oh my goodness, are you ok?" is what I asked her. She just looked up at me and started crying, then got up and ran away from me. I felt bad, but she had run away so I walked up to the stand and picked out three pretty peaches, a medium looking watermelon and four green granny smith apples. I got in line to pay for my items after I had picked everything out.
When I was at the front of the line I set my items on the counter and the cashier rang my items up. The cashier told me that my total was going to be $12; I reached into my back pocket to pull out the $20 my mother had given me to pay for the food. When I put my hand into my back pocket I found nothing, the money was not there!
The cashier was starting to look impatient, I said: "One second, I know I have the money somewhere." I couldn't find it anywhere. I was slightly embarrassed, I had to tell the cashier that I didn't have any money, and then I had to go and put my items back. I really didn't want to go home empty-handed.
This was the first time my mother had sent me on an errand by myself and I didn't want to disappoint her. She needed the fruit for a recipe she was making for an event we were going to later on today. It was already 1:30 pm and she told me to get home by 2:15 pm so she would have enough time to make the dish before the event, which starts at 3:30 pm.
I had driven so I wouldn't have to walk back with all the fruit in my arms. It was a 10min drive from the market to my house. If I left now and went back home to get the money and then came back I would have enough time. So as I was walking to my car I saw someone trying to break into it.
I did a double take to make sure it was my car; my car is a black ford with two bumper stickers on the back. I have a bumper sticker of the T.A.R.D.I.S, which stands for Time & Relative Dimension in Space, and an oval that says 'I love my dog.' That sticker is my mother's, I don't love our dog our dog was put on the earth just to drive me crazy.
After looking at the back it was definitely my car and I wasn't sure if I should make my presence know or not. I mean if the person breaking in had a weapon or something to hurt me there would be nothing I could do. I'm just a 19-year-old girl that can't do anything to defend myself in any way shape or form, oh I forgot to mention my name is Sophia.
Unless doing the splits would scare away the robber or a cartwheel, I got nothing. I would recommend not dwelling on the fact that I'm 19 and this is the first time I was given an errand by myself, not everyone wants to learn how to drive as soon as they turn 16. I lived in a place where everything was within walking distance and if I needed to get somewhere that was farther my mother would drive me.
I really didn't want my car to be stolen, even more so because it wasn't even my car. I was too nervous to try and talk up as well. I didn't matter anyway, I saw the person unlock the car and get in. I guess they hotwired it because the engine started. Then I watched in sadness as the person pulled out of the place I had parked and started making their way to the exit. Just as the person was pulling up to the stop sign with the right blinker going the car just stopped.
I run up by the car but far enough to get away if something were to happen. The person that had stolen my car hopped out of the car and started talking to himself. I got a little closer so I could hear what he was saying.
This is what I heard "You have got to be kidding me, the one and the first time I finally am able to steal a car and I steal one with no gas in it."
I couldn't hold my laugh back, that's when the guys head turned and looked at me. I realized that was not the right choice to make and when I saw he was looking at me I gave a shy smile. He started walking up to me and I couldn't decide if I should run away or stay put. I mean it was my car wouldn't that mean I should stay by it even if it meant having to face this robber.
On the other hand, I could run away and call my mother telling her what happened hoping she will not be that upset. Once again I waited too long thinking about what to do instead of just doing it because the robber was already standing in front of me. I was about to say something to him because I wasn't as scared as I was before. He didn't look that scary he looked to be the same age as me or maybe a little older.
He turned around and shouted at the car "Jane come here" that's when the same little girl I had bumped into not 25mins ago came running from the car and up to where we were standing.
